  • 21、“The Delta variant is the most able, fastest and fittest of the coronavirus variants,” said Mike Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Program. And the USA’s top health officials said recently that the Delta variant is racing through the country and now is responsible for 83% of all USA cases. So what makes the variant so horrible?

The Delta variant was first identified in India in spring this year. In just a few months’ time,it has spread across the globe. Research from the United Kingdom shows that the Delta variant is highly contagious(传染的). It’s about 60% more easily passed from person to person than the Alpha version, which was first identified in the UK. While a single infected person might have spread older versions of the virus to two or three others, number—called the basic reproduction number—might be around six for Delta, meaning that, on average, each infected person spreads the virus to six others.

Early evidence suggests the Delta variant may cause more severe disease in people who are not vaccinated. In fact, it has raised the risk even higher, increasing the odds that an infected person would need to be hospitalized or could die from their infection by 50% compared to older variants, regardless of vaccination status.

Emerging evidence from England and Scotland, analyzed by Public Health England, also shows an increased risk for hospitalization with Delta. The Delta variant has about 15 different mutations(突变) compared with the original virus. Two of these mutations can help the virus escape the antibodies we make to fight it.

It has another mutation that is also getting researchers’ attention—known as P681R. This mutation appears to help the virus get into our cells. So it’s more likely to be in the right position to infect our cells if we come into contact with it.

P681R may also enhance the virus’ ability to unite cells together to be clumps(团块). These clumps of cells are called syncytia(合胞体). They turn into a big factory for making viruses. Scientists aren’t sure what these supersized syncytia mean exactly, but they have some theories. They may help the virus copy itself more rapidly. That may enhance the ability of the virus to transmit from person to person. At least one recent study from China supports this idea. That study tracked 167 people infected with the Delta variant back to a single case.

Scientists say that what we already know about the Delta variant makes vaccination more important than ever.

【1】Compared to the Alpha variant, the Delta variant ________.

    A.It helps kill infected cells.

B.It needs to be studied further.

    D.It can cause more mutations.

【4】What’s the main purpose of the text?

    A.To give an explanation.

    B.To open a discussion.

    C.To make comparisons.

    D.To promote a suggestion.

  • 22、The most beloved bird in history may very well have been a 29-year-old pigeon by the name of Martha. It was the early 1900s, and Martha was at the height of her fame. Perched on her humble roost at the Cincinnati Zoo, she was an object of fascination to the thousands of visitors who lined up just to catch a glimpse. Martha may not have looked the part of an animal celebrity, but she was hardly average—in fact, she was the very definition of one of a kind. After the death of her companion George in 1910, Martha had become the world’s last-living passenger pigeon.

There was a time not long before when her kind accounted for more than a quarter of the birds in North America and may have been the most abundant bird species on the planet. Passenger pigeons used to travel at 60 miles an hour in flocks a mile wide and 300 miles long. Witnesses compared them to a train rumbling through a tunnel.

Ironically, the passenger pigeons’ very abundance may have spelled their doom. An agricultural pest and reliable source of protein, they became easy targets for hunters who killed them in the tens of thousands. In a matter of decades, a bird that once numbered in the billions was reduced to a few, and then, eventually, to one.

Martha, who’d grown up in captivity, had no offspring of her own. At 1 p.m. on September 1, 1914, Martha fell from her perch, never to rise again—one of the rare occasions in which historians could identify the exact moment of a species’ extinction.

Of course, the real tragedy was that the loss of the passenger pigeon was neither surprising nor unique. For as long as the Earth has sustained life, it has also seen the permanent disappearance of life forms, the dinosaurs being a particularly extreme example. But Martha’s high-profile death trained national attention on an alarming new trend. Close to a thousand animal species alone have died off in the last 500 years, and the trend is only getting worse.

【1】What caused the extinction of passenger pigeons?

    A.The loss of their habitats.

    B.The worsening of global warming.

    C.The burning of fossil fuels.

D.Their nutritional value and threat to farming.

【2】Why are dinosaurs mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To illustrate we can do nothing to stop species extinction.

B.To show the extinction of a certain species is not a rare case.

C.To explain human activities are to blame for species extinction.

D.To stress immediate measures should be taken before it is too late.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards the new trend of species extinction?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Confused.

    C.Relieved.

    D.Concerned.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The most beloved bird George died.

B.Birds are the best friends of human beings.

C.The tragic loss of the last passenger pigeon.

D.The most abundant bird species are endangered.

  • 23、Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming. Pressure to learn people’s names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue, but privacy experts recommend proceeding with caution.

The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces via smartphone cameras and facial recognition, potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions. “It breaks down these social barriers we have when meeting somebody,” says Barry Sandrew, who created the app.

After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in via social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously defined geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee’s face, the app identifies the individual, displays the person’s name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have agreed to participate and automatically deletes users’ data after an event.

Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app’s creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that “there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you.”

The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or “face blindness,” a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone’s face, from either the smartphone’s camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user’s phone, according to the team behind the app.

    【1】Why was SocialRecall developed?

    A.To identify people.

    B.To meet friends.

    C.To organize events.

    D.To take photos.

    【2】What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.How the app was created.

    B.What makes the app popular.

    C.How the app functions.

D.What people can do with the app.

【3】How does SocialRecall help people with prosopagnosia?

A.By giving names to the photos kept in their smartphones.

B.By collecting information previously entered in the phone.

C.By providing the information of a person when they first meet.

D.By showing the person’s information when it spots a stored face.

【4】What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage?

A.It may put people’s privacy at risk.

    B.It has caused unintended consequences.

C.It can prevent some communication disorders.

D.It’s praised by users for its protective measures.

  • 24、   When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn't understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laugh turned into crying.

So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so, too, does crying.

Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.

Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don't even know we’re very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.

Just as crying can be healthy, not crying - holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering - can be bad for physical health, Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural –and healthy-emotional response.

1Why didn't the author cry when her grandmother died?

A.The author doesn't give the explanation.

B.Because she did not love her grandmother.

C.Because she was too shy to cry at that time.

D.Because her father did not want her to feel too sad.

2It can inferred from the text that ______.

A.there are two ways to keep mental health.

B.crying does more good to health than laughing

C.crying and laughing play the same jobs.

D.emotional health has a close relationship to physical health.

3According to the author, which of the following statements is true?

A.Crying is the best way to get help from others.

B.Fighting back tears may cause some health problems.

C.We will never know our deep feelings unless we cry.

D.We must cry if we want to reduce pressure.

4What might be the most suitable title for the text?

    A.Power of Tears

    B.How to Keep Healthy

    C.Why We Cry

    D.A New Scientific Discovery

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When the last customer left, it was already 10:30 pm. Eric, an 18-year-old college student in Atlanta, dragged himself home. In order to save money to buy himself the new mountain bike, he had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation. He already had 120 dollars. With one more week, he would have his dream bike.

Entering his room, Eric found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.

“Sorry, Eric. I ... I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously.

    “What is it?”

“This afternoon I went to play football on the road outside our house and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr. White’s car. I was so scared and I ... I hurried home in panic without telling him.”

    “Is the car seriously damaged?”

“The ball hit the front hard and the left headlight of it got broken.”

“It’s truly your fault. It’s really dangerous to play football on the road. What’s worse, you shouldn’t come back without telling Mr. Smith about it,” Eric raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard.

“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. And it is too late today. We have to deal with it tomorrow. Now you just go to bed.”

When Bill went bed, Eric couldn’t go to sleep himself. Father always told him to be honest, to be a man respected by people and to be an example of his brother. He was sorry for his brother’s behavior. He shouldn’t have run away after he did something wrong. But he could understand him. Anyway, he was only a boy of seven and what had happened really scared him. But as his elder brother, he should do something about it although this may delay his plan of having the mountain bike. “Nothing serious, just another week in KFC,” he said to himself.
