二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“Have you checked the oil in the car?” my father used to say to me, his version of “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with an inquiry about the oil and end with one about the oil.

Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium of practical advice. In my experience: It’s mostly about your motor vehicle.

My student car—an old green Toyota bought for $500—was the vehicle for which my father carved his paternal affections(父爱). I bet it’s always been so. Back in ancient Rome, the father would test the son on the state of his carriage.

Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? The point is: You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase love you can be heard in the slightly lengthier “I could come around Saturday and replace the seal(密封圈)around the base of your toilet because I assume that thing is getting really smelly.”

The affectionate phrase “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be rarely heard, but there is the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves off the roof.”

When I was 17, I went on my first road trip in that Toyota. My father stood on the comer. “Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try overtaking anything faster than a horse and carriage. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would repeat “horse-and-carriage” every time I sped up to overtake some other speeding vehicle.

Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so ignored was simply dad’s attempt at affection.

【1】According to the author, a typical father’s greetings may start with “________”.

    A.Look who it is!

    B.Everything OK?

    C.Hi, sweetheart!

D.How’s the leak in the ceiling?

【2】What did the author's old Toyota mean to his father?

A.A symbol of his son’s admiration.

B.A medium for his paternal love.

C.A sign of a modernized lifestyle.

D.A turning point in the family life.

【3】Why does the author mention certain daily phrases in Paragraphs 4 and 5?

A.To show the fatherlish’s influence on kids.

B.To illustrate a dad’s loving concern for kids.

C.To prove the usefulness of a dad’s greetings.

D.To compare different versions of fatherlish.

【4】What is probably the best title for the passage?

    A.Speaking Fluent Fatherlish

    B.Remembering Very Moments

    C.Displaying Parental Love

    D.Giving Practical Advice

  • 22、Nowadays many people are concerned about the problem of what to do with electronic waste such as old televisions, computers, radios, cellular telephones and other electronic equipment.

Electronic trash, or e-waste, is piling up faster than ever in American homes and businesses. People do not know what to do with old televisions or computers so they throw them in the trash.

National Solid Waste Management Association (NSWMA) state programs director Chaz Miller says the large amount of electronic waste Americans product is not unexpected.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates more than 400 million consumer electronic items are dumped each year, and there is a push by more states to ban the waste from landfills (垃圾填埋场) and create recycling programs. They can be torn apart and sorted for useable parts. Mike Fannon who runs the plant in Baltimore says, “There are lots of valuable metals that can be recovered and reused instead of just putting them in the landfill, and in certain components there are some materials that should not really be in the landfill.”

Fannon says nearly 20 percent of electronic waste is recycled nationwide. Thirteen years ago, it was only about 6 percent. Recycling rates continue to rise as more communities have banned electronics from landfills in order to keep e-waste poisons like lead (铅) and mercury (汞) out of garbage dumps.

This year several states like Vermont imposed a ban on electronic waste in landfills. More than 25 other states have also adopted bans on e-waste in landfills. Chaz Miller says more can be done to boost electronic waste recycling.

“We can do much better,” noted Miller. “I think clearly our goal should be to do as well as we do recycling newspapers.”

【1】Which of the following does NOT belong to e-waste?

    A. Old televisions.   B. Old computers.

    C. Old cell phones.   D. Old newspapers.

【2】Why is e-waste banned from landfills in many states?

    A. Because it can not be recycled.

    B. Because the landfills are already full.

    C. Because it might damage the environment.

    D. Because it can be shipped to other countries.

【3】According to Mike Fannon, what might be the best way of dealing with e-waste?

    A. Recycling it.   B. Selling it.

    C. Burying it. D. Breaking it.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Chaz Miller works for EPA.

    B. Miller is optimistic about the future of e-waste.

    C. At present, less than 10 percent of e-waste is recycled.

    D. All states in the US have banned e-waste from landfills.

  • 23、   The world is full of distractions. If you work in an office, it might be emails, phone calls or colleagues with questions to ask, which take your attention away from what you are doing or thinking about. If you are at home, it might be the contents of the fridge or a sudden fixation on dust mites (尘螨) under the sofa. Sometimes it takes even less. If you are sitting and doing work and someone near you says something particularly interesting, that can pull your focus. If you are not careful, you will end up your day with nothing accomplished.

So, how can we stay focused in our wandering minds? Switching off email or messaging services helps. And put your smart phone and other irrelevant screens away—they attract your attention even if they are off. If you tend to pop on headphones and use music to shut out distractions, avoid listening to anything familiar. Knowing the words or tune well will distract you even more.

Not all distractions are bad, however. If you are doing something repetitive like stuffing envelopes or laying bricks, being distracted by listening to music or engaging in a conversation with a co-worker can ultimately increase productivity. Creativity can benefit from distraction too. Jihae Shin, now at the university of Wisconsin-Madison, has found that when people played Minesweeper for five minutes before coming up with new business ideas, they were more creative than those who didn’t play.

Switching between tasks can also help. In general, this is the enemy of productivity: it encourages mistakes, stops us from completing things, promotes forgetfulness and lowers the quality of writing. But when we are trying to come up with creative solutions, task-switching distractions can help prevent “cognitive fixation” on ineffective approaches. So if you are a creative type, try lining up two or more tasks and spend your day switching between them.

1Why does the author mention many examples in Para.1?

A.To reveal the troubles of distractions.

B.To present the findings of recent studies.

C.To highlight the values of multitasks.

D.To emphasize the importance of being focused.

2What can be inferred about task-switching distraction from the passage?

A.It will improve the productivity of the repetitive work.

B.It may be shut out by listening to the familiar music.

C.It may lower the efficiency of multitasks.

D.It will help to come up with new ideas.

3What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.Upsides and downsides of distraction.

    B.Distraction and creativity.

    C.How to stay focused.

    D.Causes of distraction.

  • 24、Home appliances and consumer electronics products witnessed strong sales during the Spring Festival holiday, as stay-at-home consumers purchased cutting-edge (尖端的) digital products to keep themselves entertained and to send wishes to family members in other cities. According to the Ministry of Commerce, sales of communication equipment and home appliances rose by 39 percent and 29. 9 percent during the seven-day holiday.

Ma Ke, a white-collar worker in Beijing, did not go back to her hometown in Wuhan, Hubei Province during the holiday. Instead, she bought a 5G smartphone and a smartwatch for her parents as New Year gifts. “My father is a fan of electronic products. He always wants to be an early user of the latest phones and smartwatches,” Ma said. Consumers like Ma are answering the local measures to stay where they work during the holiday period in a bid to reduce the potential spread of the COVID-19 (新型冠状病毒). While staying put, they are buying the latest digital products and adopting cutting-edge digital technologies. Some of them have bought new fitness device, as the stay-at-home-fitness trend is booming in China.

Sensing many consumers have not traveled during the holidays, shopping malls have also come up with new ideas to better entertain them. Shopping malls in Shenzhen and Beijing, for instance, have set robots powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to issue a variety of coupons (优惠券) for dining, movies, sports and other activities to attract consumers.

Jacky Han, vice-president of marketing at tech company Cheetah Mobile, said shopping malls play a central yet complicated role in the retail ecosystem. “AI-powered robots can help merchants to convert foot traffic into intelligent data, by functioning as an interactive advertising platform and information desk and transforming the customer experiences,” Han said.

【1】Why did people buy advanced digital products according to paragraph 1?

A.To keep up with fashion trends.

B.To give them to their friends as presents.

    C.To help strengthen Chinese economy.

D.To entertain themselves and contact their families.

【2】What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.5G smart devices are suitable gifts for the old.

B.It is difficult for the elders to adapt to the digital age.

C.Office workers are primary consumers of fitness equipment.

D.Staying put may promote the consumption of electronics.

【3】How did shopping malls attract consumers during the holiday?

A.By using robots to send out coupons.

B.By letting kids experience AI technology.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    The Gift of Kindness

Will, a nine-year-old boy, was such a kind soul that he brought home birds with broken wings. Money was very short for his family because his mother was ill. Every weekend, Will would mow his neighbors lawns to earn a little money.

One hot dry morning, on his way to school, Will saw a man sitting on the roadside with his head in his hands. Not far away was his truck. Previously, the man spared no efforts in repairing it, but he failed, exhausted and thirsty. Will came up to him, ready to help.

Hearing Will’s greeting, the man raised his head, looked at Will and asked for some water. Learning that he had even not had breakfast, Will walked into a shop, fingering the money in his pocket. Eventually, he picked up sandwiches and water. They cost all his money! He shrugged, walked back and handed him the food.

The man received the supplies gratefully and they shared the brief meal while introducing themselves. Allan, a boss with a small factory who delivered goods by himself, smiled,” The delivering job is so tiring that nobody seems to want it. By the way, thank you for your food. I’m sorry that I forget to take money with me today. I’ll..”

“It’s OK. My mom always says we should be kind to the world, and the world will be kind to you!” Will shrugged, “As for the job, don’t worry. There must be someone wanting to take it.”

“Perhaps. Today, I feel kindness in the world like your mom says. Maybe she is the one the world has been kind to.” Allan commented.

Will lowered his head, explaining quietly his mother’s situation and his father’s just being out of work because of the bankrupt of the company. Will pointed at a house. “My dad says we’ll have to sell it to pay for mom’s treatment. Sometimes, I hope the world could be kind to our family soon.” Tears rolled down Will’s cheeks and Allan patted his back gently. But soon, Will wiped his face, shouldered his school bag, waved goodbye to Allan and rushed for school, never imagining he would see Allan ever again.

Allan stared at Will’s fading figure, lost in thought.
