二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Online thrift (节俭) store thredUP has released its tenth annual Resale Report. The study, which assesses trends in the secondhand clothing industry, has an obviously positive tone. Resale is booming in the United States, as well as globally, and the secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026, reaching an impressive valuation of $82 billion.

This is serious growth that indicates a real shift in the way people approach shopping for clothes. For most, it’s a way to save money in an inflationary (通货膨胀) economy. Forty-four percent of shoppers say they’re cutting back on buying clothing-more than any category apart from restaurants. Some say secondhand is enabling them to keep enjoying the brands they love.

When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly careful about what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Gen Z (网络新生代) shoppers said they’ll pay more for an item that they know they can resell, and 36% of Gen Z shoppers stock and clear their closets at the same monthly or weekly rate. More than half resold clothing last year. As resale becomes more accessible thanks to mobile technology and online platforms, increasing numbers of customers are keen to turn over their closets, which fuels the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more.

Secondhand helps to relieve people’s climate-related concerns. Thrifting is far better for the environment than buying new. As thredUP reported in 2021,buying used reduces an item’s carbon footprint by 82%. Choosing used over new displaces 17.4 pounds of CO2 emissions. It requires far less water and energy to produce, and it spares that item from going to landfill, where it will break down and give off methane, a greenhouse gas more powerful than CO2.

It’s great to hear such positive news. Thrifting is a no-brainer, when you stop to think about it-well-made and good-looking fashion that helps the planet while saving us money. The more mainstream it can get, the better off we’ll all be.

【1】What does the booming of resale mean to most shoppers according to the text?

    A.Reducing expenses.

    B.Bringing down inflation.

    C.Focusing less on brands.

    D.Eating out more in restaurants.

【2】What promotes the development of the resale industry?

A.Scientific development makes resale easier and more convenient.

B.Many Gen Z shoppers choose used over new.

C.Buying used has become a mainstream.

D.Cleaning the closets is more frequent.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude to the resale of secondhand clothing?

    A.Disapproving.

    B.Objective.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Favorable.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Secondhand Clothing Improves Climate

    B.Secondhand Market Benefits Americans

C.ThredUP Released A New Resale Report

D.Secondhand Clothing Is A Hot Market

  • 23、I was born with a rare disease that prevented the normal growth of my right arm. I was heart-broken at school. Those cruel experiences won’t affect me now, but back then they struck me very hard.

My parents realised playing with Lego was a great way to improve my flexibility, so they bought me a set when I was five. I built planes and cars, and even a prosthetic (义肢的) arm, though I had already decided I didn’t need a prosthetic arm — it was very expensive, and I was doing just fine.

I made one because it’s fun. I have since made several new versions. And my latest model is the most advanced and comfortable. It has a control unit that can send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the motors, with cables that contract like muscles.

A lot of people don’t have the ability to buy a prosthetic. I hate it when people have to pay up to €100,000 for a prosthetic. They shouldn’t pay that much — it’s not a luxury. My goal is to try to make some that more people can afford.

When I was 19, the parents of an eight-year-old boy got in touch to ask if I could build him a prosthetic. His arms and legs are underdeveloped as part of his condition, so I made two prosthetic arms using Lego units costing only €15. His smile when he used them for the first time was very encouraging.

To me, my creations don’t necessarily tell the story of how I overcame my condition with Lego; they’re about how I overcame the tough period almost every day at school.

  • 24、The burning of coal may be falling out of favor as a means of generating heat and electricity, but that doesn’t mean it no longer has valuable uses. The team of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is using coal for a new economy.

The project is led by Associate Professor Andrea Fratalocchi. While reading about challenges of ending the use of coal in power generation, Fratalocchi was struck by a novel possible use for coal. “Why don’t we use coal for seawater desalination (脱盐)?” Fratalocchi recalls, still excited. Capable of taking in sunlight, the black mineral adds to the list of substances in dark colors serving the purpose, which the team is on a long-standing hunt for.

Fralalocchi and his team began to explore the use of a material known as carbonized compressed powder (压缩粉末), also CCP, which is created by breaking coal into powder, and then pressing that powder back into a solid that has more tiny holes—it can also be made into a desired shape. The team mixed CCP with natural cotton fibers, producing a block which was then placed within a seawater-containing container, with its bottom touching water surface. While sunlight heated the black surface of the block, the inside fibers helped water flow in and through the block from the bottom. When that liquid water reached the hot surface, it turned into steam which rose and condensed (冷凝) on the inside of a specially shaped cover. That condensation then flew down the cover and was collected as fresh, drinkable water. The seawater’s salt content remained behind within the CCP. A simple wash was enough to remove most of it, so the material could be reused multiple times.

KAUST has partnered with the Dutch start-up PERA Complexity to promote the technology. The material will see its first use in a pilot plant in Brazil. “CCP is abundant in nature and reasonable to use, besides being lightweight and highly changeable,” says team member Marcella Bonifazi. “The device’s desalination rate per unit of raw material is two to three times higher than that of any other solar desalination system, but it produces fresh water at around one-third the expense of current state-of-the-art technologies.”

【1】What has Fratalocchi’s team been seeking for?

    A.Fibers functioning well with CCP.

    B.Green ways to desalinate seawater.

    C.New industrial applications of coal.

    D.Dark-colored materials for desalination.

【2】How did the seawater get into the CCP block?

    A.Through the tiny holes.

    B.Through CCP.

    C.Through cotton fibers.

    D.Through a special cover.

【3】Which feature of CCP does Marcella Bonifazi stress?

    A.Being eco-friendly.

    B.Being low-cost.

    C.Being efficient.

    D.Being flexible.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Drinkable water will be got from the sea.

B.CCP is expected to be in real-life use soon.

C.Coal finds new use in desalination technology.

D.Scientists have made a breakthrough in desalination.
