  • 22、   If you grew up watching the Jetsons, the idea of having a robot helper that cleans and cooks for your family has always been a fantasy. People want to have a robot do the housework and the good news is that great minds are working on it.

Elon Musk announced back in June that his OpenAI robotic institute was working on developing software that would enable off-the-shelf robots to do household chores and various other engineers are working on robots that could accomplish cleaning and organizing tasks. The bad news is that experts say not to expect these robots in our homes any time soon.

“Cleaning is different from other tasks we’ve thought about in robotics, which typically involved manipulating objects, or moving them place to place.” said Maya Cakmak, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington, to MIT Technology Review.

Cakmak said that to accomplish household chores, robots have to know the fight tool for each specific task, the right angle to hold each tool, how to move it, how much pressure to use, how fast to move and more. Think about the variety of tools and techniques you use just to clean your kitchen. It’s much more complicated than just lifting objects and moving them.

Cakmak is teaching robots in her lab through demonstrating cleaning techniques for the robot’s vision system. The robot then imitates the cleaning motion .The goal is to get the robot to learn the correct cleaning motion and for it to be able to determine if the surface is clean after the action.

Even when that is accomplished, there’s a long way to go. In order for a robot to clean an entire house, it would have to be able to fully understand its environment and make decisions based on the state of each roomsomething that is beyond the current abilities of artificial intelligence. Cakmak says that she believes houses will also have to be redesigned with machines in mind so that robots can better identify their position within a home and move around in it.

1How can we describe about household chores for robots?

A.Complex and demanding. B.Simple and easy to handle.

C.Unusual but easy to manage. D.Dangerous and challenging.

2How does Cakmak instruct robots to do cleaning work?

A.By setting an example to them. B.By imitating the cleaning motion.

C.By analyzing their vision system. D.By teaching some specific techniques.

3What can we infer about the future of cleaning robots?

A.They’ll reach more consumers. B.They’ll help solve housework entirely.

C.They’ll still face many challenges ahead. D.They’ll be equipped with artificial intelligence.

4Which is a suitable title for the text?

A.Varied Styles of Cleaning Robots B.Benefits from Possessing Robots

C.Cleaning Robots: A Future New Trend D.Cleaning Robots: A Long Way to Go

  • 23、There are plenty of mindless activities to keep a child busy in this information age. Yet despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Alice wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition which she won last year.

As a writer, I know about winning contests—and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection letter from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and destroyed hopes can resurface in our children.

A revelation(启示)came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied. “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地)told them. Telling myself that I was an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借鉴) my daughter’s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

1The underlined sentence probably means that the author was __________.

    A. trying to let her daughter enjoy her own life

    B. helping her daughter develop real skills for writing

    C. making sure that her daughter would win the contest

    D. trying to get her daughter to do the thing as the author wished

2Why did Alice want to enter this year’s writing contest?

    A. She wanted to share her story with readers.

    B. She had won a prize in the previous contest.

    C. She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

    D. She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.

3The author took great pains to improve her daughter’s stories because _________.

    A. she was afraid that Alice’s imagination might run wild while writing

    B. she did not want to disappoint Alice who needed her help so much

    C. she wanted to help Alice realize her dream of becoming a writer

    D. she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance

4What does the writer mean to tell us in the last two paragraphs?

    A. Children need more room to develop.

    B. Parents should co-opt children’s experience.

    C. Children should be provided enough help.

    D. Parents need to remind their children of their own choices.

  • 24、Nearly gone are the days when humans covered themselves with blankets to keep warm, and it’s now the age of covering glaciers (冰川) with blankets to keep them cool because at the rate climate is changing, this seems like a very workable idea to keep them from melting (融化).

At a ski resort (度假胜地) in the Swiss Alps, the Swiss use blankets to protect the glacier from the warm climate. Gian Darms, who handles snow conditions at the ski resort, introduced this unique procedure. The blankets are being used to cover the top of the 10,623-foot Mount Titlis whose glacier has already melted in the last few decades and it is expected to disappear completely in the next 50 years due to global warming.

Facing the great effect of climate change, resort employees have taken it upon themselves to protect the glacier from the heat and for this process, they spend about five to six weeks every summer covering parts of the glacier with specially protective wool. This helps to reflect the Sun’s energy back into the atmosphere and prevent the glacier from melting, while also preserving the already fallen snow on the glacier in the previous winter season. After the season passes, the employees remove the coating and fill in the gaps in the glacier’s surface with the snow — now that is some commitment to Mother Nature!

This practice has been going on for a while now and the area of the glacier has increased to almost 100,000 square meters now. “We’ve been covering more and more in the last few years. Almost 30,000 square meters more is covered this year alone,” said Darms.

The ski resort’s actions show how severe the effect of climate change is on glaciers which have been melting at rapid rates in the past few years. Many different resorts have also started following suit to try to prevent them from melting. Saving an entire glacier is a completely different story. It is actually costly and potentially unfavorable to surrounding ecosystems. As a result, such blankets have only been applied mostly in an effort to preserve profitable ski runs.

    【1】How is the topic introduced?

    A.By giving an example.

    B.By analyzing causes.

    C.By describing a process.

    D.By making a comparison.

【2】What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 3?

A.Coating the glacier with special wool.

B.Using collected snow for the glacier’s openings.

C.Taking action to slow down climate change.

D.Saving the glacier at the ski resort successfully.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards the future of global glaciers?

    A.Worried.

    B.Opposed.

    C.Indifferent.

    D.Skeptical.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Blankets Cover an Entire Glacier

    B.Global Warming Threatens Glaciers

C.Resort Cools Its Glacier with Blankets

D.Glaciers Enter a Different Age Now
