21、Imagine the busy streets of New York City, an enormous place with millions of people. Every day, the streets are crowded with people going about their daily lives. Now imagine a small robot in the middle of all of those people. Most people would not even notice the ten-inch smiling robot, called a Tweenbot, rolling along the busy sidewalk. This strange machine may interest some people, while others would ignore it completely. A researcher interested in studying how helpful people really are uses such robots in her experiments.
The Tweenbots experiment is the idea and creation of Kacie Kinzer, which was to make a robot that could navigate the city and reach its destination only if it was aided by pedestrians. Tweenbots rely on the kindness of warm-hearted strangers. Made simply of cardboard, wheels, and a device to turn the wheels, the Tweenbots face many dangers on the city streets. They could be run over by cars or smashed by careless kids. Each of Kinzer’s robots is fitted with a flag that displays instructions for the robot’s destination. The only way these robots will reach their final point is if someone lends them a hand. Tweenbots are essentially a social experiment aimed at providing people a chance to show how caring they are.
On a daily basis, people in New York City are often in a hurry to get around. However, the Tweenbots, through their inability to look after themselves, took people out of their normal routines. The people who noticed the helpless little robots were actually interested in helping the Tweenbots find their way home. Tweenbots move at a constant speed and can only go in a straight line. If one was to get stuck, or was going in the wrong direction, it would be up to strangers to free it or turn it in the right direction. Surprisingly, no Tweenbot was lost or damaged, and each one arrived at its target in good condition. In fact, most people treated the robot in a gentle manner, and some even treated it as though it were a small living being.
【1】What’s the purpose of Kinzer’s experiment?

【3】What can a Tweenbot do?
A.Free itself when stuck.
B.Turn at the crossroads.
C.Instruct the strangers its destination.

B.Tweenbots’ inability.
C.The result of the experiment.
D.New Yorkers’ normal routines.
22、 Medicine is not only a human invention. Many other animals, from insects to birds to nonhuman primates (灵长类), have been known to self-medicate with plants and minerals for infections and other conditions. Behavioral ecologist Helen of the Borneo Nature Foundation has spent decades studying the island’ s orangutans (红毛猩猩) and says she has now found evidence they use plants in a previously unseen medicinal way.
During more than 20,000 hours of formal observation, Helen and her colleagues watched 10 orangutans occasionally chew a particular plant (which is not part of their normal diet) into a juice and then rub it into their fur. They spent up to 45 minutes at a time rubbing the mixture onto their upper arms or legs. The researchers believe this behavior is the first known example of a nonhuman animal using an external pain-killer.
Local people use the same plant—Dracaena cantleyi (龙血树), an unremarkable-looking bush with stalked leaves—to treat aches and pains. Helens, co-authors studied its chemistry. They added chemicals from the plant to human cells that had been grown in a dish and had been artificially stimulated to produce cytokines (细胞因子), an immune system response that causes inflammation (炎症) and discomfort. The plant chemical reduced the production of several types of cytokines. The scientists reported the finding in a study published last November in Scientific Reports.
The results suggest that orangutans use the plant to reduce inflammation and treat pain. Such findings could help identify plants and chemicals that might be useful for human medications.
【1】What does “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Birds. B.Local people.
C.The ten orangutans. D.The researchers.

A.Orangutans mainly live on the particular plant.
B.Orangutans are the first animals to use a pain-killer.
C.Helens findings can be of great use for human drugs.
D.Helens co-authors added the chemicals from human cells to the plant.
【4】How does the author support his idea?
A.By analyzing data. B.By sharing experiences.
C.By making comparisons. D.By giving examples.

24、In many casual discussions of language and the Internet, it’s common to hear about how “social media language” is ruining language. Some people argue that technology has made us lazy about how we speak and write. And major media such as the BBC and The Daily Mail have all bemoaned the way in which people communicate through technology.
Of course, language does change when it’s used to write messages online. Social media language is an evolution(进化)of language. It’s even the focus of the field of linguistics(语言学)called Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). This field concentrates on the study of interaction brought about by technology like computers, mobile phones and tablets.
People have been making complaints about language being “ruined” for as long as they’ve been writing and speaking. In a TED Talk, linguist John McWhorter shared stories of people being annoyed about language change through the ages. In AD 63, for example, a Roman scholar complained that students of Latin were writing in an “artificial language”. In fact, this writing was a new language that would become French!
Today, people are able to communicate rapidly using a wide variety of tools and technologies. Perhaps no linguistic development better indicates changes in the ways we communicate than the popular emoticon(表情符号).
The emoticon “:)” is a visual performance of a smiley face turned sideways.
Although an emoticon may look like a smile, a frown or any other kind of facial expressions, it doesn’t really represent a face. Instead, it’s intended to express a feeling, such as “I’m happy,” or “just joking”.
Words that represent these feelings are what linguists call discourse particles(话语小品词). These are little pieces of language that offer information about the tone of the statement.
Far from ruining language, these examples indicate how people can now communicate complex feelings in a simple, direct manner. This kind of change is perfect for our modern, fast-paced world.
【1】What does the underlined word “bemoaned” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Complained about.
B.Approved of.

D.Put forward.
【2】Why is the TED Talk mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.As evidence of complaints about shared stories.
B.As an example to support the author’s argument.
C.As a proof of language ruined by social media language.
D.As a way to explain language change through the ages.
【3】What’s the function of emoticons according to the text?
A.To represent a smiling face.
B.To express intentions.
C.To communicate feelings.
D.To set the tone.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards social media language?
A.Unclear.
B.Skeptical.
C.Opposed.
D.Approving.
