  • 21、It’s certain that we’re all getting older. And while the older among us may be no spring chickens any more, growing old gracefully is no bad thing.【1】However, as the world population ages, will there be enough people to replace our younger selves?

A situation where there are more old people than young certainly has an effect on the world. A report by the Pew Research Center says that globally the number of people over 65 years old will triple by 2050, drastically altering some countries’ demographic (人口的) make-up.【2】Governments will struggle to provide satisfactory pensions, which are ultimately funded by taxes paid by the working population. And long-term, a smaller population of economically-active people may be a problem for companies trying to recruit staff.

【3】The Pew Research Center survey found that 87% of Japanese people were most concerned about it, while only 26% of people from the USA were. Some countries thought the elderly should take care of themselves, while others thought it was the responsibility of the family.【4】

But old age shouldn’t just be seen negatively. Elderly people have knowledge and experience to pass on. Some have wealth which they can spend, helping the economy. And some do voluntary or charity work.【5】And these include increasing the retirement age, encouraging people to save for the future, or even convincing people to have more children.

    A.And with age comes wisdom.

B.Of course, solutions are needed to tackle the issue.

C.The aging population can be potential new customers

D.Many thought the government should be responsible.

E.Attitudes to an aging population vary around the world.

F.It also predicts that the world population will decline in the next century.

G.This aging population means an increased demand for health and social care.

  • 22、Rene Compean had hiked the park near his home in Southern California many times. But after exploring a new path last April, he was lost.

With no flashlight, only a little water and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean climbed to a spot where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his dirty legs hanging over a number of steep rocks. All Compean could do then was to wait and hope.

Sixty miles away in Ventura, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a tweet from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, showing an unclear image of a man’s legs. The sheriff’s search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location.

When he saw the unclear picture, he pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. The first thing he noticed in Compean’s photo was patches of greenery. After comparing it to the satellite map, Kuo realized something: He’s got to be on the south side because there’s not really any green valleys on the north side.

That finding tightened his search, leading him to an area that resembled the place in the image. The final step was cross-referencing(相互参照) the original photo with 3D images of the area from Google Earth. The locations matched!

He quickly called the sheriff’s department with the latitude and longitude supplied by Google Earth. Soon, a search-and-rescue team helicopter was in the air, hovering above Compean.

After spending 27 hours alone in the wilderness, Compean cried, “I’m safe!”

Sgt. John Gilbert in the sheriff’s department thought Compean’s story probably would have ended very differently had a total stranger with strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail not taken action.

【1】Why did Rene Compean get lost?

A.Something was wrong with his legs.

    B.He didn’t have a flashlight and water.

C.He was not familiar enough with the path.

D.His phone failed to work well in signaling.

【2】Which of the following best described Rene Compean after he got lost?

    A.Calm.

    B.Thrilled.

    C.Tired.

    D.Adventurous.

【3】What mainly contributed to Compean’s successful rescue?

    A.Google Earth’s supply of location.

    B.The Sheriff’s Department’s rescue effort.

    C.Compean’s previous kindness towards others.

D.The stranger’s kindness and his satellite skills.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

    A.Compean likes exploring unfamiliar paths.

B.The stranger found the right location without effort.

C.Technology has become increasingly significant in our lives.

D.Hiking without full preparation can surely lead to trouble.

  • 23、Valcamonica has one of the largest collections of rock drawings in the world. There have been about 200,000 figures and symbols carved into the rocks over a time period of approximately 8,000 years. Valcamonica's pictures show various scenes and are connected through common themes like magic, war, navigation and agriculture.

The rock drawings discovered in Valcamonica were the first prehistoric symbols of their kind recognized anywhere in the world. UNESCO first recognized the drawings in 1979 when about 140,000 were discovered, however, since then many more have been uncovered.

These drawings are spread all across the valley. The carvings began to taper off during the Iron Age and fewer appeared after that. The last period has been attributed to (归功于……)  the Camunni people. Still there are drawings that have been identified as being from the 19th century. Many of these were created using the technique of engraving (雕刻).

Some of the figures discovered in Valcamonica have been superimposed (叠印) without any order, but in most cases they appear in logical orders and also explain the relationship between each picture or symbol to tell a story.

The first known modern report of the rock carvings was in 1909 when Walther Laeng happened upon two decorated rocks in Capo di Ponte. Scholars only took interest in the drawings in the 1920s. More rocks with engravings were soon found in the areas nearby and research into their history began. In the 1930s comprehensive study campaigns were undertaken.

It was after the Second World War that the cataloging and mapping of the engravings began. This task was taken up by various teams of experts from Italy and other countries that were led by Laeng. In 1955 preservation work on the rocks began.

In 1968, a large series of conferences were held where scholars from all over the world met to discuss the rock drawings, which give us some idea of what various societies of the past might have been like.

1What do we know about Valcamonica's pictures?

    A. They tell a long whole story.

    B. They are interrelated in some ways.

3What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A. The history of the rock drawings.

    B. The features of the rock drawings.

    C. The discovery of the rock drawings.

    D. The formation of the rock drawings.

4Studies of the rock drawings _____.

    A. show us the development of art

    B. started after the Second World War

    C. were conducted by scholars from UNESCO

    D. help us know something about societies of the past

  • 24、Sara Braden doesn’t have time to lose things. She’s a working mom with a lot more hobbies than her friends, and when she misplaces her keys or leaves her purse at a restaurant, she becomes annoyed and impatient. “It impacts me greatly,” says Braden, 35, a Washington officer.

According to a recent study led by Daniel Arely, a professor of psychology at Harvard University, Braden has ADHD, a type of attention disorder, which, she says, makes her “likely to put things in certain places and not remember where I put them.”

Her anxiety is familiar to anyone whose phone is missing a dozen times a day. Such kind of mistakes might result in a constant fear: Is something wrong with me? Probably not. “It’s common and certainly annoying,” says Professor Arely. “Most of the time, losing things is a breakdown of attention and memory. We’re thinking about something else. We have other concerns occupying our attention, and then we never really add the information to memory about where we’ve put the object.”

The study shows that, sometimes, people with ADHD report that losing things affects their work productivity or relationships. For example, if they can’t find their keys all the time and are late for a dinner party, they could anger their friends. In that case, it’s worth being evaluated by a doctor. Nevertheless, not all cases deserve special attention. Actually, people who have had ADHD since they were teens have nothing much to worry about. For those with ADHD, what really matters is changes from past performance.

When we’re operating on autopilot and not truly focused on our surroundings, we may still lose things even with the strongest intention not to do so, Professor Arely says. But for the most part, he thinks people can overcome the tendency to lose things. Sara Braden has learned to adapt, in part by writing down where she has stored items. She also coaches herself not to panic when an item gets lost.

【1】How does the author introduce the topic?

    A.By offering an example.

    B.By quoting a remark.

    C.By making a comparison.

    D.By giving an explanation.

【2】What is the possible reason for people’s losing things?

    A.Their constant fear.

    B.Their common weakness.

    C.Their absent-mindedness.

    D.Their emotional breakdown.

【3】What should people with ADHD pay special attention to?

    A.Improved efficiency at work.

    B.Occasional delay in meeting friends.

    C.Losing things repeatedly since teens.

    D.Behavioural changes from the past.

【4】What is Professor Arely’s attitude to overcoming forgetfulness?

    A.Positive.

    B.Sceptical.

    C.Tolerant.

    D.Conservative.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Breaking up is hard to do but men’s hearts hurt most

When it comes to break-ups, men suffer more emotional pain than women, a study has found. The first-of-its-kind analysis used online relationships to map the most common problems experienced by couples who told their stories outside the therapist’s office.

A team of researchers at Lancaster University helped to produce the report. Charlotte Entwistle, the lead author, said: “Most of what we know comes from studies of people in couples therapy: a specific set of people. We wanted to understand not only what relationship problems are most commonly experienced by the public, but who experiences by the public, but who experiences which problems more.”

To bridge the gap the team analysed the characteristics of more than 184,000 people who had posted their problems to an anonymous online forum, and they created a “map” of the most common issues.

Communication was the most frequent, cited by nearly one in five people, while one in eight reported that trust was a struggle. The outcomes came as no surprise but the team was taken aback at the obvious gender differences. The theme that kept cropping up was the “heartache” felt, and the team recorded specific words such as “regret”, “break up”, “cry”, and “heart-broken”.

Contrary to expectation, men talked about heartbreak significantly more than women. The findings suggest that the stereotype of men being less emotionally invested in relationships may be inaccurate.

The researchers also found that men were more likely to seek online professional help. Dr Ryan Boyd, the lead researcher, said: “When you remove the traditional social stigmas against men for seeking help and sharing their emotions, they seem just as invested in working through rough patches in their relationships as women.”

The researchers hope that an accurate picture of relationship problems could help couples avoid common setbacks. Boyd said: “This gives us serious hope that we can use help-seeking behavior to better understand all types of social and psychological issues.”

The study was published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.
