二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles, But in fact, some clothing companies are already making such clothes. Fashion brand JUMA recently showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing items from the collection, including jackets, shirts and dresses, were made from recycled plastic bottles. “We realized that billions of water bottles were being thrown into landfills and oceans every year and that these bottles take hundreds of years to break down.We thought we should use them to create our clothes and help the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company's design director.

Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted and shaped into small balls. The balls are melted again to for thread. People can then use the thread to make different kinds of clothes.

According to Juma, it takes 67,000 bottles to create 1 ton of thread. This reduces carbon emissions(排放)by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making thread.“Four bottles can make one pillowcase. Five can make a shirt, 10 a dress and 20 a short coat,”Juma said.

Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But according to Causeartist, a website that focuses on innovation, clothes made from plastics could be even better than some clothing-making materials.Plastic thread can be made into different textures(手感),such as cotton, silk or even wool. “The more we learn about recycled fabrics, the more we realize that they work just like other fabrics. You can get a heavier cotton feeling or a silky feeling by weaving the yarns(纱)into different textures and using different wash methods. There's actually a lot you can do with this fabric.” Juma said.

Currently, the price for the clothes in the new collection ranges from 500 to 3,000 yuan, However, Juma is optimistic that prices will decline when more companies follow the sustainability path taken by her business.

【1】What caused Juma to create the clothes made from plastic bottles?

    A.They are light to carry.

    B.They are easy to wash.

    C.They are simple to make.

    D.They are environmentally friendly.

【2】How does Juma support her views in Paragraph 3?

    A.By analyzing causes.

    B.By presenting figures.

    C.By giving live shows.

    D.By quoting others' words.

【3】What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.The emergence of a new fashion in clothing.

B.The advantages of clothes made from plastics.

C.The procedure of making clothes out of plastic bottles.

D.The reduction of carbon emission when making plastic thread.

【4】What will the price of the plastic- made clothes be like in the future?

A.The price will go up year by year.

B.The price will range from 500 to 3,000 yuan.

C.The price will fall if more companies participate.

    D.The price won't change a lot.

  • 23、   Since English biologist Charles Darwin (1809 –1882) published On the Origin of Species in 1859, scientists have vastly improved their knowledge of natural history. However, a lot of information is still the subject of speculation, and scientists can still only make educated guesses at certain things.

One subject that they guess about is why some 400 million years ago, animals in the sea developed limbs () that allowed them to move onto and live on land.

Recently, an idea that occurred to the US paleontologist (古生物学家) Alfred Romer a century ago became a hot topic once again.

Romer thought that tidal (潮汐的) pools might have led to fish gaining limbs. Sea animals would have been forced into these pools by strong tides. Then, they would have been made either to adapt to their new environment close to land or die. The fittest among them grew to accomplish the transition (过渡) from sea to land. Romer thought that tidal pools might have led to fish gaining limbs.

Romer called these earliest four-footed animals “tetrapods” (四足动物). Science has always thought that this was a credible theory, but only recently has there been strong enough evidence to support it.

Hannah Byrne is an oceanographer (海洋学家) at Uppsala University in Sweden. She announced at the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Oregon, US, on Feb 15 that by using computer software, her team had managed to link Romer’s theory to places where fossil deposits (化石沉积) of the earliest tetrapods were found.

According to the magazine Science, in 2014, Steven Balbus, a scientist at the University of Oxford in the UK, calculated that 400 million years ago, when the move from land to sea was achieved, tides were stronger than they are today. This is because the planet was 10 percent closer to the moon than it is now.

The creatures stranded in the pools would have been under the pressure of “survival of the fittest”, explained the UK’s University of Bangor ocean scientist Mattias Green. As he told Science: “After a few days in these pools, you become food or you run out of food … the fish that had large limbs had an advantage because they could flip (空翻) themselves back in the water”.

As is often the case, however, there are others who find the theory less convincing. Cambridge University paleontologist Jennifer Clark, speaking to Nature magazine, seemed unconvinced. “It’s only one of many ideas for the origin of land-dwelling (陆地栖息的) tetrapods, any or all of which may have been a part of the answer,” she said.

1Who first proposed the theory that fish might have gained limbs because of tidal pools?

    A.Charles Darwin. B.Alfred Romer. C.Hannah Byrne. D.Steven Balbus.

2Why were tides stronger 400 million years ago than they are today according to Steven Balbus?

A.There were larger oceans. B.Earth was under greater pressure.

C.The moon gave off more energy. D.Earth was closer to the moon.

3What does the underlined word “stranded” in Paragraph 8 mean?

    A.Trapped. B.Settled. C.Survived. D.Adapted.

4What is the focus of the article?

A.The proposal of a new scientific theory.

B.The arguments over a scientific theory.

C.Some new evidence to support a previous theory.

D.A new discovery that questions a previous theory.

  • 24、   Across the globe only 10 percent of the population are left-handed—and it has been that way for thousands of years. But when you look into the sports world, lefties exist in large numbers. Why? The answer lies in the relative balance between cooperation and competition in human society, says a new study published in Britain’s The Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

The study by professor Daniel Abrams and Mark Panaggio of applied science points out that for society to function efficiently—hand in hand—cooperation is key. And cooperation favors same-handedness—so we can share tools, for example, and more easily teach each other skills.

On the other hand, competition favors the element of surprise. And this is why “left-handers have the advantage in any sport where there’s direct physical contest,” Abrams said. “They have the surprise advantage in that they practice more against the right-handers, but the right-handers don’t practice much against them. “It’s also the reason lefties haven’t been wiped out,” evolutionarily speaking. “Left-handed people have always had this built-in advantage for this kind of competition,” Abrams said. Thus, so long as there’s competition in society, lefties will survive.

Adams and Panaggio created a computer model that correctly predicted the percentage of left-handed athletes in several sports. About half of major league baseball players and pro boxers are left-handers, while among PGa golfers the number of lefties is a mere 4 percent.

“Golf is one of our go-to examples for the cooperative effect,” Abram said. “Left-handers seem to be selected against in golf, and the reason for that is that golf has a cooperative aspect to it. Especially when people first begin playing golf they tend to borrow or rent clubs, and left-handed clubs are harder to find and they’re more expensive. So there’s a cooperative advantage in that people can share clubs when they’re all of the same handedness.”

But it’s not just golf that can be challenging. Living as a left-handed minority in a world designed for the right-handed majority can be really dangerous. “Evidence from outside the sports world is that left-handers are more likely to be involved in accidents in various ways,” Abrams said.

So when picking players for the office softball team, you want to choose as many lefties as you can to maximize your chance of winning—but don’t be surprised when they show up to the game injured.

1There are more right-handers in the society because ________.

A.they can work together better B.people prefer to use right hands

C.lefties are unwilling to cooperate D.it has been the case for a long time

2In what sports are lefties favoured?

    A.Sports that surprise audience.

    B.Sports that value individual practice.

    C.Sports that require professional skills.

    D.Sports that involve physical competition.

3Why are only 4% golfers left handers?

A.Because golf has a high entry barrier.

B.Because left handers get injured easily

C.Because golf Lakes up much lime and energy.

D.Because left handers find it hard to win in golf.

4The main purpose of the passage is to ________.

A.compare and educate B.explain and inform

C.discuss and persuade D.examine and assess

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右。

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year,   thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.

Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.

We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.

When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.

But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.

We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.

Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

“Three, two, one. Happy New Year!” we screamed the words as loud as possible.
