  • 21、Katie Piper, born in October, 1983, is a former model and television presenter from UK. Piper had hoped to have a full-time career in the media, but in March 2008 sulphuric acid (硫酸) was thrown in her face. The attack, which blinded Piper in one eye, was arranged by Piper’s ex-boyfriend, Daniel Lynch, who revenged on Piper for her ending their romantic relationship.

The acid destroyed all the skin on Katie’s face, neck and hands, and left her blind in one eye. It also burnt her nose and throat so severely that she needed to be fed through a tube in her stomach and regularly had operations to expand her esophagus (食道) as the scar tissue restricts her ability to eat and drink.

Piper spent seven weeks in the burns unit at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. She was unconscious and spent ten days in the intensive care, and she wore a special plastic pressure mask for 23 hours a day for two years, in an effort to flatten her scars.

In May 2009 Piper made the decision to give up her anonymity (隐姓埋名) and share her story in a remarkable film for the programme Cutting Edge on Channel 4 called Katie: My Beautiful Face. The programme, supported by a huge press campaign, first aired in November 2009 and won high praise from the audience.

Then, Piper set up the Katie Piper Foundation to improve recovery facilities for burns survivors while providing a network of support and information on burns, scars and treatment, both medical and non-medical.

  • 23、   It's October and you know what that means —the return of pumpkin Kit Kats, spooky (幽灵般的,怪异的)costumes for the kids and, of course, homemade Halloween treats. The whole spooky season leads up to tricks on October 31, but Halloween as we know it may be changing.

It's pretty common knowledge that Halloween takes place on October 31. For a lot of parents, it's a night of headaches. Sure enough, parents are fully occupied with an unforgettable Halloween party and have no time to be with the kids. Then the kids have to be dressed and out the door for two hours of trick-or-treating time, which can be tough to manage. Most remarkably, it's hard to pack all the holiday fun into a school night. Eating all that candy right before bed won't make for an easy school day the next morning.

Last year, a nonprofit organization called the Halloween and Costume Association(HCA) began a petition (请愿)to change the date of Halloween. They proposed that Halloween take place on the last Saturday of the month. Thus, parents can have time to celebrate it with their kids.

Though the petition started in 2018, it has really picked up steam this year. Right now, more than 148, 000 people have signed. When a quota(限额) of 150,000 signatures is met, the petition will be delivered to the President of the States, and the government will be making the final call.

Really, the petition isn't about breaking tradition but about making Halloween more family-friendly. It technically makes Halloween longer, so who wouldn't be taking about all-day spooks? If you'd like to sign the petition and make your voice heard before October, you can find it here.

1What troubles parents most on Halloween?

A.They can't find the kids in the night. B.They have little time to prepare for it.

C.It's hard for kids to behave themselves. D.Halloween may take place on a school day.

2The petition for Halloween is actually intended to____.

A.help kids gain more freedom B.create more parent-child time

C.allow parents to have a day off D.promote the event to a new level

3What can be inferred about the petition?

A.No one desired to sign their name at first. B.It has been put aside by the government.

C.The US president thinks nothing of it. D.It has gained increasing favor.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Break the traditional barriers? B.Make Halloween Much Longer?

C.Celebrate it in another manner? D.Necessary to observe Halloween?

  • 24、 Security—for the information on your smartphone, as well as for the phone itself---is a hot topic these days. The truth is that you’re packing a lot of sensitive information on your phone, and you should keep it safe.

When it comes to physical security, iPhone users would do well to download Find My iPhone, a free app from Apple that allows you to visit a website and see your (lost, stolen or misplaced) phone on the map. You can then sound an alarm, send a message that will pop up on its screen, lock the phone or erase all your data.

Android does not have an exact equivalent(等价物), but there are plenty of alternatives. A free app called Lookout offers the find-my-phone feature. The paid version allows you to wipe the data from your phone remotely.

Then there is your coffee shop’s WiFi network. Anyone with minimal technical expert skill can snoop on(窥视) people using shared wireless networks, harvesting passwords and other personal data. Lookout’s apps will caution you when you’ve logged on to an insecure network, but cannot protect you once you’re there.

In order to protect yourself on such networks, you can use a virtual private network, or V.P.N. This turns all your activity into nonsense to anyone trying to read along with you from across the Starbucks. It also keeps websites from tracking you and, if you’re traveling, allows you to get access to sites that may be blocked in other countries.

If you have an iPhone, the simplest V.P.N. app is probably Hotspot Shield, whose distinguishing feature is said to be that it automatically kicks in each time you start browsing (浏览), as opposed to other V.P.N. apps that require you to start them up manually(手动). This matters, because even if you decide you want a V.P.N. app, you want to spend approximately zero time thinking about it. For the most part, that was true of Hotspot Shield, though occasionally it took a while to connect or temporarily lost connection without warning. I found myself having to turn the app on and off sometimes, which involved setting my phone constantly.

If even reading about the setting on your phone drives you crazy, then it is probably best to stay away from a V.P.N. app. But if you’re the type who can’t resist checking your bank balance from your comer bar, the hassle (麻烦) may be preferable to the risk.

【1】 Which of the following can warn you against the insecure network?

    A. Android B. V.P.N.

    C. Lookout D. Find My iPhone

    【2】By using V.P.N., users can ________.

    A. find their lost phone on the Internet

    B. remove all the data form the phone remotely

    C. check the bank balance now and then

    D. save their browsing from being tracked

【3】The underlined word “that” in Para.6 refers to the fact that _________.

    A. a V.P.N. app kicks in automatically

    B. the users starts V.P.N. apps manually

    C. the app take a while to connect

    D. users spend no time thinking about it

  • 26、   It was 1939, and the Great Depression had made all our lives much harder. But we didn’t know how poor we were until our father sat my brother and me down on the couch in our living room to have a talk.

I will always remember the sad look in Father’s eyes as he stared down at his hands, rubbing them back and forth, while he searched for the words to tell us that our family wasn’t going to be celebrating Christmas this year.

A month later, on Christmas Eve, I lay awake in bed late into the night, trying to talk myself out of sneaking into our living room to see if Santa had come. I gathered my courage, then tiptoed down the hallway, hoping I would see the bright sparkling lights of our Christmas tree standing proudly in the corner of our living room, like it did every year.

Instead, I was greeted by my seventeen-year-old brother, Frank, who slept on our living room couch. “Hey, little one, what are you doing up?” he whispered.

I started to cry. “There’s no Christmas tree.”

There would be no presents, no singing, no Christmas dinner. It felt like we were the saddest family in the world. My disappointment overwhelmed me. I looked forward to Christmas each year. It wasn’t only the presents. It was that special feeling I got from seeing my family happy. We hadn’t been happy in such a long time.

On Christmas morning, the sun shone into our chilly bedroom, waking me up. “Maybe Santa came! Maybe he came!” I suddenly insisted. My eyes searched the living room, but there was no Christmas tree. I broke into uncontrollable tears.

I ran to Father in tears and threw my arms around him. “ We aren’t going to have Christmas this year.”

“Now, now, now, calm down. Go on in and see your mother. She will comfort you.” Dad slowly pushed the bedroom door open, leading me into the room.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
