  • 22、   Cats certainly know the sound of their food can being opened, but do they know their own name? Cats might be skilled in knowing how to always land on their feet, keep themselves clean, and strategically knock things off the counter, but do they know their own names?

“While cats might not always understand what exactly we’re saying. They definitely can learn to associate sounds with good or bad outcomes,” says Mikel Delgado Cat Behavior Expert with Rover. “When you talk to your cat, they probably respond most to your tone of voice. People tend to talk to their pets in higher-pitched voices which are good at getting their attention.”

Cats can also recognize noises that indicate food or attention is coming. They associate those sounds with a positive experience, so they learn to recognize what they mean.

Delgado adds, “Over time, our pets do learn to associate their name with certain things-like attention, or food. You can help your cat learn their name faster by not using lots of different nicknames, which might be confusing to your pet and they may not always realize tat you are speaking to them, “Your cat is more likely to respond to their human's voice versus a stranger’s voice.” says Delgado.

You can train a cat to respond to words the same way dogs do. In order to train,Delgado says you first need to identify what motivates your cat, like a particular treat or toy. Then start with something simple such as sit.

“Over time, your cat makes the connections between their behavior, your response or the sound, and the treat,” says Delgado. “Then when they want a treat, you might notice that they offer the behavior you trained-such as sitting or rolling over-which is why it’s a good idea not to train your cat to do annoying things.”

  • 23、   This summer, a cave in Central Europe got a lot of attention when it became home to more than two dozen baby dragons. These animals are actually called olms (洞螈) which look like dragons.

A female olm might lay eggs just once every six years. Excitement over the possibility of new babies started in January, when the first egg was spotted deep within the Postojna Cave in Slovenia. In the end, with the help of scientists, 22 olms were born between May 30 and July 14. They are now growing into healthy teenage dragons.

Olms live in underwater limestone caves in Central Europe. These caves are difficult to reach, so scientists don’ t often get to observe olms in their natural habitat.

Olms, which can grow to be up to 16 inches long, are one of the largest cave animals in the world. They have pale skin and long snouts and their tiny eyes are fully covered with skin.

No natural light reaches these deep caves, so many animals that live there cannot see. But olms use their incredible senses of smell and hearing to hunt worms, crabs, and snails. Olms can also survive without food for long periods of time, even as long as 10 years.

When a female olm laid 64 eggs in the Postojna Cave last winter, scientists thought that only two or three of them would survive. In the wild, only about two baby olms successfully hatch from 500 eggs. The last time a female olm laid eggs at the Postojna Cave, none of the eggs hatched. So this time, scientists worked very hard to care for the olm eggs and watched over them as they grew. About one-third of the 64 baby olms survived, and they appear to be doing well.

Scientists are hopeful about the babies’ future. Although baby olms don’ t eat for the first couple of months, by August three of the oldest babies were eating worms. That was an important step in their development.

“We will keep doing everything we possibly can to ensure the olms’ well-being,” a press statement for the team stated.

1What can we learn about the birth of the olms found in the Postojna Cave this year?

A.It is an extremely rare event. B.It proves dragons really exist.

C.It needs more public attention. D.It means a new-found species.

2What is a characteristic of olms?

A.They prefer living in dry environments. B.They have a poor sense of hearing.

C.They can live up to 10 years. D.They are born blind.

3What do the numbers in Paragraph 6 show?

A.Olms can’ t live without scientists’ help.

B.The birth rate of olms is usually very low.

C.Olms usually face hard living surroundings.

D.Fewer and fewer female olms lay eggs now.

4How old were the oldest baby olms when they began to eat this summer?

A.Less than one month old. B.Over two months old.

C.Nearly twelve months old. D.About eight months old.

  • 24、The remains of a gold mask are among a huge quantity of 3,000-year-old artifacts (文物) found at an archaeological (考古的) site in China’s Sichuan province.

Weighing about 280 grams and estimated to be made from 84% gold, the ceremonial mask is one of over 500 items unearthed from six newly discovered “sacrificial pits” (祭祀坑), according to the country’s National Cultural Heritage Administration.

The finds were made at Sanxingdui, a 4.6-square-mile area outside the provincial capital of Chengdu. Some experts say the items may shine further light on the ancient Shu state, a kingdom that ruled in the western Sichuan basin before 316 BC.

In addition to the gold mask, archaeologists uncovered bronzes (青铜器) and artifacts made from other materials such as bone. The six pits also contained an as-yet-unopened wooden box and a bronze container with owl-shaped patterning.

More than 50,000 ancient artifacts have been found at Sanxingdui since the 1920s, when a local farmer accidentally came upon some remains at the site. A major breakthrough occurred in 1986, with the discovery of two ceremonial pits containing over 1,000 items, including delicate and well-preserved bronze masks. Discoveries made at the site date back to the 12th and 11th centuries BC.

Sanxingdui has completely revolutionized experts’ understanding of how civilization developed in ancient China. In particular, evidence of a unique Shu culture suggests that the kingdom developed independently of neighboring societies in the Yellow River Valley, which was traditionally considered to be the birthplace of Chinese civilization.

Though not yet recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sanxingdui is on the organization’s list for possible future inclusion. Along with other Shu archaeological sites, it is credited by the UN agency as “an outstanding representative of the Bronze Age Civilization of China, East Asia and even the world.”

【1】What does the underlined phrase “shine further light on” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Make greater progress in.

    B.Have a deeper influence on.

    C.Provide more information about.

    D.Engage more attention to.

【2】Why is the discovery of Sanxingdui so unique?

A.It changes experts’ understanding of how Chinese civilization developed.

B.It confirms that the Shu Kingdom developed in the Yellow River Valley.

C.It implies that the Yellow River Valley is the birthplace of Chinese civilization.

D.It shows Sanxingdui symbolizes a fundamental change in Chinese society.

【3】What does paragraph 5 mainly deal with?

    A.Sanxingdui’s history of discovery.

    B.The world’s recognition of Sanxingdui.

    C.The difficulty in discovering Sanxingdui.

    D.The preservation of Sanxingdui’s remains.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

A.Sanxingdui Accidentally Discovered by a Local Farmer

B.3,000-year-old Gold Mask Uncovered in Southwest China

C.Outstanding Representatives of the Bronze Age Kingdom

D.New Addition to the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Tom and Jane planned a holiday at the lake, and they decided to take their children, Tim and Sarah, with them. However, Tim and Sarah wanted: to visit Disney World for their holiday or hire a yacht (游艇) in Hawaii. Camping by the lake wasn’t even on their list of holiday adventures.

“We can visit some of the islands too,” Jane said. “Your dad and I always wanted to explore the mysterious cabin on Moose Island.”

Mysterious cabin? The children were now far more interested in this lake holiday idea.

“We might see Big foot,” Tim said.

“Or some unusual species!” Sarah turned to her parents. “We’re in. When do we leave?”

The children’s excitement quickly disappeared when they arrived at the lake. While their parents were carrying their suitcases inside, Timand Sarah stood on the path and stared at the cabin they’d be staying in for the next week, complaining about the smell around, the dust, and the various small insects.

“We’re in nature now, kids. Enjoy the experience! Your dad is building a fire so we can have barbecued fish and potatoes baked in the coals. Isn’t that great?”

Sarah choked. “I am not eating food cooked in coals! I want takeaway instead.”

“Me too.” Tim was about to cry. “Holidays are supposed to be fun, Mom.”

“Come on, guys. There’s a lot of joy to be found in living a simple life and spending time together as a family.”

“People in the suburbs live a simple life, which is more like being homeless!” Sarah shouted

“Yeah,” Tim added. “How can there not be a single restaurant that delivers here? How do these people survive?”

“They eat coal potatoes!” Sarah laughed. “And fish they kill with their bare hands!”

Sarah ran away, and Tim followed. Jane buried her head in her hands. She realized she had to do something to correct their children’s attitude towards simple life. After dinner, she told all about this to Tom, who agreed with Jane. Then they came up with an idea.

    注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
