二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、People aren’t walking any more—if they can figure out a way to avoid it.

I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn’t in any hurry, either, I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis.

It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(免疫的), for I was bred in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced—and beat—a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.

Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrhams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercises. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise—the most familiar and natural of all.

It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flower, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world, He cannot learn in a car.

The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach Nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.

I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.

    1What is the national sickness?

    A. Walking too much.

    B. Travelling too much.

    C. Driving cars too much.

    D. Climbing stairs too much.

2What was life like when the author was young?

    A. People usually went around on foot.

    B. People often walked 25 miles a day.

    C. People used to climb the Statue of Liberty.

    D. People considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship.

3The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that _____.

    A. middle-aged people like getting back to nature

    B. walking in nature helps enrich one’s mind

    C. people need regular exercise to keep fit

    D. going on foot prevents heart disease

4What's the author's intention of writing this passage?

    A. To tell people to reflect more on life.

    B. To recommend people to give up driving.

    C. To advice people to do outdoor activities.

    D. To encourage people to return to walking.

  • 22、Four Efficient Ways to Improve Your Speech

    1. Use More Facial Expression

One psychologist feels that our facial expression is responsible more than anything else for the impression others have of us. In fact, more than 50 percent of another’s impression, he believes, is influenced by the look on your face. Naturally a smile in which the eyes participate is extremely communicative. An unfriendly look often brings the same thing in return. People tend to mirror your expression, so try to show how you feel about a topic or an idea or the audience through your facial expression.

    2. Rid Your Inner Fear

It's natural to have some tension or nervousness when you appear before an audience. The way to handle it is to put it to work for you, get into action, as Shakespeare observed, action cures fear. There are only a few known ways to control fear. The first is to admit it, do the thing you fear and it will be the death of fear itself. Another simple aid at the last minute before you begin, is to take a few deep breaths, this will help get the butterflies in formation and also keep your voice under control. In fact, if you’re thoroughly prepared, just taking a few deep breaths before you’re introduced will give you added confidence and balance. Other known ways to control nervousness and fear are to give yourself an encouraging talk or take some physical exercise.

    3. Polish Your Voice

Our voice is the main instrument we possess for communicating with people, we’re all sound sensitive. So invest in a tape recorder, practise your speech by speaking it into the microphone then listen to it. You can even have others join in the evaluation of your strong points and your weaknesses or faults as well. Remember that Demosthenes and Winston Churchill both used pebbles in their mouths while practising their speaking. Simply reading out loud can also help you improve your voice and develop a personal style.

    4. Strengthen Your Memory

Psychologists tell us that most individuals don’t use above ten percent of their natural capacity for memory, that’s comparable to trying to run a car on one cylinder(汽缸). Why do most people use so little of their power of memory? Because they don’t practise the fundamentals of remembering. First and most important, it’s necessary to have a burning desire to remember, it’s difficult to recall anything without wanting to do so. Step number two is concentration. Henry Ward Beecher once observed, one hour of intense concentration can accomplish more than years of dreaming. The next principle is repetition, we learned many things in school by rote by repetition, when you hear a name for the first time repeat it, spell it, write it down, review it, you’ll soon know it by heart.

【1】To make a good impression on others, you should pay special attention to your ______.

    A. voice     B. gestures

    C. facial expression   D. words

【2】Which of the ways to rid yourself of your inner fear is NOT included in the passage?

    A. take a deep breath

    B. take some physical exercise

    C. keep your voice under control

    D. encourage yourself

【3】You can improve our voice by ______.

    A. listening to the tape

    B. imitating others

    C. keeping pebbles in your mouth

    D. reading out loud

【4】According to the article, which of the following is true?

    A. We can strengthen our memory by practising.

    B. We can remember things longer if we do not try to remember them on purpose.

    C. Henry Ward Beacher believes that repetition is the key to long memory.

    D. We can only remember names sooner by repeating them.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 to two women scientists, Charpentier and Doudna, “for the development of a method for gene editing."

The discovery of these genetic scissors was unexpected.During Charpentier' s studies of Streptococcus pyogenes, one of the bacteria that cause the most harm to humans, she discovered a previously unknown molecule(分子),tracrRNA. Her work showed that tracrRNA is part of bacteria's ancient immune system, CRISPR/Cas. Charpentier published her discovery in Nature in 2011 and described how tracrRNA works with the Cas9 protein(蛋白质)to follow and kill viruses by cutting up their DNA.

Then in that same year,Charpentier began to cooperate with Doudna, an experienced biochemist in RNA.Together, they succeeded in recreating the bacteria's genetic scissors in a test tube and simplifying the scissors' molecular components so they were easier to use. They then reprogrammed the genetic scissors. In their natural form, the scissors recognize DNA from viruses, but Charpentier and Doudna proved that they could be controlled so that they can cut any DNA molecule at a predetermined site. Where the DNA is cut, it is then easy to rewrite the code of life.

Since the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors were discovered in 2012, their use has exploded though there are concerns that the technology could be misused. This tool has contributed to many important discoveries in basic research, and plant researchers have been able to develop crops that withstand mould, pests and drought. In medicine, clinical trials of new cancer therapies are underway, and the dream of being able to cure inherited diseases is about to come true.

1According to Charpentier's studies of Streptococcus pyogenes, tracrRNA_____

    A.can change life's DNA precisely

B.causes the most harm to human beings

C.is a previously unknown immune system

D.works with Cas9 protein to split viruses' DNA

2Which order shows the discovery of the genetic scissors?

    a. Charpentier began to cooperate with Doudna.

    b. Charpentier published her discovery in 2011.

    c.Charpentier studied Streptococcus pyogenes.

    d. The bacteria's genetic scissors were recreated.

e.The genetic scissors were then reprogrammed

    A.a-b-d-c-e

    B.c-a-b-e-d

    C.a-d-e-c-b

    D.c-b-a-d-e

3What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Concerns about the misuse of genetic scissors.

B.The widely-spread use of the genetic scissors.

C.The important discoveries in basic research.

D.Contributions to cure for inherited diseases.

4Which  of he following is the best title for the text?

A.Cooperation:Secret to Success in Scientific Researches

B.Genetic Scissors:a Tool for Rewriting the Code of Life

    C.Charpentier & Doudna:Women Scientists Acknowledged

D.The Nobel Prize in Chemistry: a Promoter of Gene Editing

  • 24、Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.

In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus it began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.

Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?

Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children of touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

【1】The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because________.

A.they lived healthily in a dirty environment.

B.they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in

C.they believed disease could be spread in public baths

D.they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease

【2】Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?

    A.Afraid

    B.Curious

    C.Approving

    D.Uninterested

【3】What does the underlined word “merit” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.effect

    B.advantage

    C.damage

    D.attitude

【4】How does the passage mainly develop?

    A.By providing examples.

    B.By making comparisons.

C.By following the order of time.

D.By following the order of importance.

【5】What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To stress the role of dirt.

B.To introduce the history of dirt.

C.To call attention to the danger of dirt.

D.To present the change of views on dirt.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There are a number of volunteer organizations out there that deal in things like clothing donation and the sale of used books. Retired schoolteacher Cathy has been a member of such an organization, VNSA, since 2012. Her duties involve working throughout the year to help prepare the books for their February sale and acting as personnel manager for the sale. That means she helps coordinate (协调) all the other volunteers who help out before, during, and after the event.

It was before the 2019 book sale and Cathy once again found herself sitting among a towering pile of books and sorting through them to ensure that they would be in good enough condition to resell. As she was sorting, she came upon a book, wrinkled and broken. Though she didn’t like doing it, the only remaining choice for her was to throw it away.

A greedy book lover herself, Cathy felt guilty about throwing away any book. Before she threw it away, she decided to check for more serious damage inside that might justify her giving it up. She opened the cover and went through the pages when she noticed something unusual.

Going through the pages, Cathy was surprised to see that a part had been hollowed out (挖空)inside the book. Obviously, something was hidden in that rather expertly hollowed space. She looked down and saw that the book’s previous owner had hidden four packages in the space, each containing ten $100 bills. Cathy’s first thought was that the bills were toy money that perhaps a kid had hidden inside as part of some childish game or something.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

But Cathy soon realized that these were real $100 bills.
