二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. America was where all my mother’s hopes lay. She had come here in 1949 after losing everything in China. But she never looked back with regret. There were so many ways for things to get better.

“Of course you can be a prodigy, too,” my mother told me when I was nine. “You can be best at anything.” We didn’t immediately pick the right kind of prodigy. At first my mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple. We’d watch Shirley’s old movies on TV as though they were training films. My mother would poke my arm and say, “Ni kan” — You watch. And I would see Shirley tapping her feet, or singing a sailor song, or pursing her lips into a very round O while saying, “Oh my goodness.”

Soon after my mother got this idea about Shirley Temple, she took me to a beauty training school and put me in the hands of a student who could barely hold the scissors without shaking. Instead of getting big fat curls, I emerged with an uneven mass of crinkly black fuzz. My mother dragged me off to the bathroom and tried to wet down my hair.

“You look like Negro Chinese,” she complained, as if I had done this on purpose.

In fact, in the beginning, I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so. I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, trying each one on for size. I was a dainty ballerina girl standing by the curtains, waiting to hear the right music that would send me floating on my tiptoes. I was Cinderella stepping from her pumpkin carriage with sparkly cartoon music filling the air.

In all of my imaginings, I was filled with a sense that I would soon become perfect. My mother and father would adore me. I would be beyond reproach. I would never feel the need to sulk for anything.

But sometimes the prodigy in me became impatient. “If you don’t hurry up and get me out of here, I’m disappearing for good,” it warned. “And then you’ll always be nothing.”

Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit at the Formica kitchen table. She would present new tests, taking her examples from stories of amazing children she had read and a dozen other magazines she kept in a pile in our bathroom. My mother got these magazines from people whose houses she cleaned. She would look through them all, searching for stories about remarkable children.

The first night she brought out a story about a three-year-old boy who knew the capitals of all the states and even most of the European countries. A teacher was quoted as saying the little boy could also pronounce the names of the foreign cities correctly.

“What’s the capital of Finland?” my mother asked me, looking at the magazine story.

All I knew was the capital of California, because Sacramento was the name of the street we lived on in Chinatown. “Nairobi!” I guessed, saying the most foreign word I could think of. She checked to see if that was possibly one way to pronounce “Helsinki” before showing me the answer.

The tests got harder—multiplying numbers in my head, finding the queen of hearts in a deck of cards, trying to stand on my head without using my hands, predicting the daily temperatures in Los Angeles, New York, and London.

And after seeing my mother’s disappointed face once again, something inside of me began to die. I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror and when I saw only my face staring back—and that it would always be this ordinary face—I began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl! I made high pitched noises like a crazed animal, trying to scratch out the face in the mirror.

And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me—because I had never seen that face before. I looked at my reflection, blinking so I could see more clearly. The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of won’ts. I won’t let her change me, I promised myself. I won’t be what I’m not.

  • 22、You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Comedy on Referral has taken that idea and run with it, using stand up comedy to help treat people struggling with trauma (创伤) and anxiety in partnership with the National Health Service (NHS).

The idea came from comedian Angie Belcher’s experiences teaching comedy at Bristol University. She found that students often told her how much stronger and more resilient (有适应力的) they were thanks to stand up comedy.

Inspired, she teamed up with the NHS in Bristol to create a six-week comedy course for patients struggling with trauma in January 2022. Following the success of this initial course, Comedy on Referral won NHS funding to help men with trauma in London.

Talking to the Bristol Post, Belcher said, “Past traumas are perfect for comedy. Comedy doesn’t come from the happy, perfect moments of your life, but from our everyday struggles and major life events. People who’ve been through big life experiences such as losing a loving one and ill health often can’t wait to tell me their story, mostly because there’s always something especially funny about the situation.”

Research has shown that laughter has positive psychological effects, such as decreasing levels of cortisol—the stress hormone—and increasing endorphins (内啡肽). It can even have physiological benefits, although less research has been done in this area. Current research has linked laughter and humour with increased levels of pain tolerance as well as short-term cardiovascular benefits. More research is needed to prove these findings.

Nonetheless, the mental health benefits of regular laughter are widely accepted, and using comedy to treat mental health struggles could be a real breakthrough in the treatment of mental health.

【1】Why is the phrase mentioned in paragraph 1?

A.To stress the importance of laughter.

B.To explain the harm trauma causes.

C.To show the effect of stand up comedy.

D.To state the idea behind Comedy on Referral.

【2】How was the first six-week comedy course for patients?

    A.Ambiguous.

    B.Effective.

    C.Controversial.

    D.Fruitless.

【3】What may contribute to a comedy according to Belcher?

    A.Happy moments.

    B.Funny moments.

    C.Struggling moments.

    D.Successful moments.

    【4】What is the text?

    A.A news report.

    B.A book review.

    C.A comedy story.

    D.A diary entry.

  • 23、In It’s a Wonderful Life with James Steward, the scene that gets me is at the end when one guy says: ‘To my big brother, George, the richest man in town.’ It kills me, man. In the film, it’s Christmas and James Stewart is in big trouble financially and he’s going to be arrested and so he decides to kill himself . But then this angel comes down (only he looks like an ordinary guy) and shows him what life would have been like in his home town if he’d never lived. And he sees how his life has touched all these other lives and really made a difference. I watch most of the film with a lump (肿块) in my throat. Brilliant!

    Pete

One of the funniest moments, I think, is in the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, when Harrison Ford is trying to escape from his enemies. It takes place in an eastern market and Indiana is suddenly faced by an enormous man carrying a huge sword. The man gives an amazing display of swordplay with this sword and you can see this feeling of panic passing over Indiana’s face. Then he suddenly pulls out a gun and just shoots the guy. The first time I saw it, the audience broke out in a cheer. Amazing! Apparently, I read later, they were going to do a full fight, but Ford didn’t want to spend hours in the sun and it would have been very expensive, so he asked Spielberg (the director) if he could just shoot the guy and Spielberg agreed.

    Mel

The opening of Jaws. It’s all in the music, which is played on the cello (大提琴). I expect everyone knows it. You start by seeing the sea from the point of view of a shark on the bottom of the sea bed. Then the scene moves to a beach and it’s a sunny day and all these families are sunbathing and haying a good time. Then there’s a girl who goes into the water and suddenly we’re under the water again, looking at the girl’s legs from the shark’s point of view. Then suddenly she screams and she’s dragged across the surface of water before she disappears. I was on the edge of my seat. It’s much more effective than showing the shark straightaway. And for the rest of the film, every time that music comes back you know something awful is going to happen.

    Lisa

Jurassic Park. The bit when the two kids are in the jeep and it’s broken down and there’s some water in the back and you hear this noise, and all you see is the movement in the water and the fear in their eyes when they understand what it means. I saw it when I was about 11 and I was frozen. That was more frightening than actually seeing the Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙).

    Anna

【1】Who thinks the film he/she recommends will make the audience cry?

    A.Pete.

    B.Mel.

    C.Lisa.

    D.Anna.

【2】What do Jaws and Jurassic Park have in common?

A.Both of them are about the effects of animals on the environment.

B.Both of them involve a fierce battle between animals.

C.Both of them depend a lot on the accompanying music or sound effects.

D.Both of them are intended for the audience over 11 years old.

【3】Which of the following statements is true?

A.In It’s a Wonderful Life, James Stewart was killed by an angel.

B.In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana and the man would have a real fight.

C.In Jaws, a girl dragged a shark to the surface of water.

D.In Jurassic Park, no Tyrannosaurus rex appeared at all.

  • 24、I’ve come back to check on a baby. Just after dusk I’m in a car down a muddy road in the rain, past rows of shackled (戴镣的) elephants, their trunks swinging. I was here five hours before, when the sun was high and hot and tourists were on elephants’ backs.

Walking now, I can hardly see the path with my phone’s flashlight. When the wooden fence post stops me short, I point my light down and follow a current of rainwater across the floor until it washes up against three large, gray feet. A fourth foot twisted above the surface, tied tightly by a short chain and choked by ring of metal spikes (尖刺). When the elephant gets tired and puts her foot down, the spikes press deeper into her ankle.

Meena is four years and two months old, still a child as elephants go. Khammon Kongkhaw, her caretaker, told me earlier that Meena wears the spiked chain because she tends to kick. Kongkhaw has been responsible for Meena here at Maetaman Elephant Adventure, near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, since she was 11 months old. He said he keeps her on the spiked chain only during the day and takes it off at night. But it’ s night now.

I ask Jin Laoshen, the Maetaman worker, why her chain is still on. He says he doesn’t know.

Maetaman is one of many animal attractions in and around tourist-crowded Chiang Mai. Meena’s life is set to follow the same track as many of the roughly 3,800 captive (被捕获的) elephants in Thailand. When Meena is too old or sick to give rides—maybe at 55, maybe at 75, she’ll die. If she's lucky, she’ll get a few years of retirement. She'll spend most of her life on a chain.

【1】Why does the author decide to come back?

A.To check the baby elephant Meena.

    B.To feed those shackled elephants.

    C.To release those shackled elephants.

D.To help an injured worker in Maetaman.

【2】What can we conclude from the second paragraph?

A.The author is scared walking in the path.

B.Meena is treated badly and very painful

C.Meena only has three healthy legs.

D.One of Meena’s leg is badly broken.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards those elephants?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Critical.

    C.Sympathetic.

    D.Negative.

【4】We can infer that the purpose of the author’s writing is______________.

A.to describe those elephants to attract tourists around the world

B.to draw people’s attention to caring about the fate of those elephants

C.to tell readers the story of a baby elephant in Chiang Mai, Thailand

D.to tell the reason why the number of elephants is decreasing

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had spent the long winter months waking up each morning with the sun and birds. Each day began like the previous one: sneakers (运动鞋), headphones and stretching. The fresh air filled my lungs as I ran out the front door, greeted by the empty streets and sidewalks. The world became my own training ground. As I ran, I found peace in the rising sun. This boring time quickly became my favorite time of the day.

I was born into a “running family”. I lost count of how many marathons my dad had participated in, and I was pretty sure my mom traveled on foot more than she did by vehicle. My brother, Mike, followed in their footsteps by running when he could, and competed in at least 4 races throughout the year. Unlike him, I didn’t naturally fall into the running life.

“Running is the best thing for you. I don’t know how people can dislike it,” my dad questioned during many dinner conversations in grade school.

“You would be a fool not to join the track team, Colleen,” my mom suggested in her serious voice.

“Of course I will,” I replied while rolling my eyes. “What could be funner than running?”

After hundreds of practices and a handful of track meets later, I found myself agreeing with my parents and laughing at the idea that I once disagreed with them. The time had come when my dad finally asked the big question, which I had been nervous about for a while.

“So, the marathon is in November. What are we thinking?”

I felt my heart sink and speed up at the same time. Oh no, was I ready for this? The words suddenly came out before I could even fully process the question.

    “Yeah, let’s do it!”

I couldn’t let him down. He had been waiting years for this experience. Finally, we spent hours training and bonding together until the big day came.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

It was at mile marker 20 when my legs began to lose feeling.
