21、International teams have spent nearly half a year looking for evidence of the missing Malaysian Airlines plane, a search that includes the hunt for the aircraft’s so-called black box, which holds flight data that would likely explain what caused MH370 to move away from its course. But many aviation experts wonder why, in our increasingly networked world, divers are searching the Indian Ocean for a metal box when technology already exists that would enable planes to stream black box data to the ground in the event of an emergency.
Black boxes have been on planes since the late 1950s, and now every commercial aircraft has two: a flight data recorder and a voice recorder. (Although they are referred to as black boxes, they are typically orange in color, making them easier to spot in waters.) Black box recorders are mainly used to investigate the cause of in-flight accidents.
While black boxes are built to survive a crash and long-term submersion(浸没)in water, it can be a real challenge to find the device if a plane has gone down in the ocean. While each box contains a beacon(无线电信标台), the unit only has enough battery power to transmit a signal for 30 days. After the crash of Air France Flight 447 in the Atlantic Ocean in June 2009, it took divers two years to find the black box.
Pierre Jeanniot, a Canadian engineer who helped perfect black box technology about 40 years ago, feels that the device, in its current form, is “obsolete”. He started to question its effectiveness more than a decade ago, after seeing the broken pieces of the black boxes in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade towers in New York. Jeanniot is now on the advisory board of a Toronto-based firm that has built a live-streamed black box system. When a plane experiences an irregular event, the system can send streaming data off the aircraft to one of the satellites and then down to ground-based servers, where the message is interpreted and sent to the airline. It seems necessary that the loss of MH370 and other similar cases wake more people up to the fact that the tools being used at this stage are inadequate for dealing with emergency situations, Jeanniot says. He also estimates that if this technology had been on board the missing Malaysian Airlines flight and live-streaming for the estimated seven hours after the flight first experienced a problem, it would have cost about $3,000.
While there is widespread approval of a live-streamed black box system, most airlines see its cost prohibitive. The airline industry is an industry with small profits, and is reluctant to add costs that will further cut the bottom line.
However, given how much time, money and effort has been spent on the luckless search for MH370, s black box, the cost of operating a live-streaming version seems like a trifle(区区小数)
【1】In this passage, the underlined word “obsolete” probably means .
A. out of date B. out of use

22、France's Louvre Museum reopened on Monday after closing in March due to the coronavirus. But things are far from business as usual.
The world's most visited museum has carried out new measures, including a mask requirement and an online-only reservation system to protect art lovers from the virus.
One unintended consequence of these restrictions has been an experience devoid (缺乏的) of the usual crowds of tourists, which normally reach up to 50,000 people a day.
Freddie Keen, visiting from London with some friends, told NPR it was easy to take his time seeing some of the Louvre's top attractions. "It was definitely a much more comfortable experience seeing the Mona Lisa without having any peer pressure from hundreds of people staring at you and waiting for you to move on," Keen said.
Floor markers in the hall, where the Mona Lisa is held, have been put in place to ensure guests keep a physical distance of at least 3 feet. Visitors must also follow a one-way path through the building.
International tourists made up around 70% of the 9.6 million visitors in 2019. Museum Director Jean-Luc Martinez said he was hoping to attract more French tourists this summer because of the current travel restrictions.
"We are going to be at best 20 to 30% down on last summer," Martinez told Agence France-Presse, adding that the museum expects between 4,000 and 10,000 visitors a day.
During the four-month shutdown, the famous art destination lost an equivalent (等价物) of $45 million in ticket sales this year. However, France's tourism industry could soon get a much-needed boost. Last week, the European Union lifted travel restrictions on visitors from more than a dozen countries considered low risk for spreading the coronavirus. Because of the rising level of virus infections among Americans, the United States was not included on the list.
【1】What one can experience with new measures taken in Louvre Museum?
A.Wearing masks offered by the museum.
B.Appreciating works of art with experts.
C.Visiting the museum with fewer tourists.
D.Enjoying tour-guide service free of charge.

A.By persuading them to wear masks.
B.By closing some districts to the public.
C.By accepting online-only reservation.
D.By sticking one-way marks onto the floor.
【3】Where do the current potential visitors probably come from according to Jean-Luc Martinez ?
A.France itself.
B.The United States.
C.European countries.
D.Around the world.
【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Restrictions on tourism will remain strict.
B.Louvre Museum suffered the greatest loss.
C.France’s tourism could gradually improve.
D.Americans are resistant to the coronavirus.
23、Occasionally, misfortune will happen in our life and no one can avoid it. If you choose only to complain and escape from the misfortune, it will constantly follow you no matter where you go. 【1】
A girl, called Selina, lost her arms in a traffic accident that caused her father’s death — who was the main source of support for the whole family. 【2】 For the sake of caring for her, her elder brother became her shadow , never leaving her alone for years. Except for writing with her toes, she was totally unable to do anything in her life. Then one day, her elder brother wanted to live his own normal life, and they had no choice but to separate. So she was almost desperate and didn’t know what to do next.
【3】 When he tried to prepare dinner for his parents, he overturned the kerosene light on the stove, resulting in a fire that took his hands away. Though his younger brother that was studying in another city, showed his willingness to take care of him, he was determined to be totally independent. At school, he always studied hard. Most of what he learned was to be independent. Once he wrote the following in his composition: “I am lucky. Though I lost my arms, I still have legs; I am lucky. Though my wings are broken, my heart can still fly. ”
One day, the girl and the boy were both interviewed on a television program. The girl complained to the TV host about her uncertain future at being left on her own, but the boy was full of enthusiasm for his life. 【4】 The girl wrote: My elder brother’s arms are my arms. However, the boy wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.
【5】 It is true that life is unpredictable. Disasters can strike at any time. How you deal with misfortune when faced with it is the true test of your character. If you choose only to complain and escape from the ordeal, it will always follow you wherever you go. But if you decide to face it bravely, the hardship will turn out to be a fortune on which new hopes will arise.
A.A similar misfortune happened to a boy named Jerry, too.
B.Since then, she had had to depend on her elder brother’s arms.
C.So his father went out looking for his mother, leaving him alone at home.
D.One night her mother, who suffered from chronic mental illness disappeared.
E.They both were invited to write something on a piece of paper with their toes.
F.They had both encountered the same misfortune, but had completely different attitudes towards lives.
G.But if you decide to be will-powered, the sufferings will turn out to be a fortune where new hopes will arise.
24、Feathers are not just for flight. They keep birds warm, and attract mates. And for one Australian bird, feathers even help produce an important sound—an alarm.
“People had long noticed these birds produced these loud sounds.” Trevor Murray, a researcher at the Australian National University said. “My supervisor Rob Magrath and May Hingee thought they were used as an alarm. So they did some playbacks and they could show quite strongly that if you play back these sounds to other birds, they flee straightaway. So I was really interested in how they produce the sound, whether it is actually a signal, and whether it’s a reliable signal.”
The team focused their experiment on specific feathers in the pigeon’s wing. “We were able to target the eighth primary feather, which is unusually narrow. And then we also removed, on different sets of birds, those neighboring feathers, the ninth primary feather and the seventh primary feather. And we were able to see when the eighth primary feather was missing, the high note had completely disappeared. So the eighth primary feather produced that high note and the ninth primary feather actually produced the low note.”
And if the birds are fleeing from danger, they produce a louder and higher sound than they do during a normal takeoff. The study is in the journal Current Biology.
Murray and his colleagues did another experiment where they used the recordings they made to observe the reactions of other pigeons. “We were able to see the unusual eighth primary feather was important for signaling the alarm. When that eighth primary feather was missing, they very rarely responded. They almost never fled. Whereas when the ninth primary produces the sound, they fled just as much as to normal alarms. This shows us this unusual primary feather is important for signaling alarm.”
That makes birds of a feather flee together.
【1】What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The birds B. Rob and May
C. The feathers D. The loud sounds
【2】What did Rob Magrath and May Hingee find out about the birds?
A. They fly away as a group. B. They produce different notes.
C. They send alarms with feathers. D. They attract mates with feathers.
【3】Why did the team remove different feathers?
A. To record the notes they produce. B. To keep the pigeons stay in cages
C. To compare their width and length. D. To observe other pigeons’ reactions.
【4】According to Murray and his colleagues, why does the unusual feathers matter most?
A. It keeps the pigeons warm B. It responds to alarms
C. It helps birds fly more quickly D. It sounds alarms of danger.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数为150左右。
Todd was freshman at Marin Luher King Jr. College Preparatory High School. When the other kids noticed he was always wearing the same black pants and blue shirt, Todd had no choice but to endure the arrows of ridicule and laughter shot to him. Although he was hurt, there was little Todd could do. His mother simply couldn't afford to buy him new clothes.
Pansy and Poppy were among the kids who often made ill-intended remarks about Todd’s clothes. But over time they came to the realization that their words felt like bullying and seemed to be slowly crushing Todd’s spirit. Something finally clicked. “I should do something,” Pansy thought to himself. So he and Poppy hatched a plan. They went home and hunted through their own drawers and closets.
The next day at school, they met Todd at their third period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was understandably concerned about being called out by the larger boys. “What...do…you want from…me?” Todd stammered, rubbing hands nervously. “We apologize for laughing at you, and we want to give something to you to make it up,” Pansy said softly, a smile blooming on his face. He then handed Todd a bulky bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.
Todd was blown away. He couldn't believe what these used-to-be bullies did. When he held the bag full of clothes, tears flowed like a stream. Before he could utter a “thank you”, Pansy and Poppy went back to the classroom saying that they would meet him in the school canteen.
Todd got much more than a new wardrobe.
Todd’s life has become different.
