21、As a boy, John Kerr wanted to be a fireman or a park ranger. Looking back on that childhood fantasy, he says, “I think it was the hat.”
Instead, he spent four decades at WGBH in Boston, one of public broadcasting’s flagship stations. He retired in 2005 at the age of 65 without any particular post-career goal in mind. After several idle weeks, he decided to drive his camper to visit family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
En route, he casually stopped at the Yellowstone Park Foundation, which raises funds for Yellowstone, America’s first national park. As it happens, the foundation was hiring people to educate park guests on wolves. Kerr signed on. After working there for several weeks, at the urging of his daughter, Kerr applied to the Student Conservation Association for an internship(实习).
To say that Kerr stood out in the intern crowd is a massive understatement. Most interns were college and even high school students. But, in a sense, he had been primed for this since his youth. His outdoor adventures with his grandfather had given him a love of nature, and, as an adult, he had helped out at the local fire department on medical calls.
He also had something else. There are 31 million Americans between the ages of 44 and 70-some retired and looking for a third act, some looking for a more fulfilling career-searching for something where they feel as if they’re making a contribution, doing something to make their neighborhood, their country, their world just a little bit better. Kerr also had that deep urge to do something more.
From his internship, he moved up to ranger, educating park visitors, making for safe encounters between guests and animals, and responding to medical emergencies. He treasures his stewardship of what he describes as one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and revels in(陶醉于)moments when he treats a visitor to an up-close look at one of the park’s wolves or bears through his telescope, an occasion that can move visitors to tears.
“These are rich and all-too-rare moments,” recalls Kerr. “I never forget them.”

23、Endless playing of songs like All I want for Christmas in shops during the festive season doesn’t just drive us mad —the songs also make us more careless with our money, research has warned.
While repeated performance of Jingle Bells may seem like an innocent attempt to raise customers’ spirits during the nightmare of Christmas shopping, the songs also have a more delicate impact.
“Background music, or “Muzak”, can be used by marketers to impose cultures ---such as the commercialization of Christmas--- onto consumers and influence their behaviour,” experts said.
Dr.Alan Bradshaw of Royal Holloway, University of London, said, “Festive jingles are force-fed to Christmas shoppers in a bid to change their mood, influence their sense of time and what sort of products they buy.In other words, this is an attempt to control your shopping habits in a way that you might hardly be aware of.”
“Often we are told that we have the freedom to choose where we want to shop, but during Christmas the use of music in this way is so common that our freedom to choose disappears.”
Dr.Bradshaw and Prof Morris Holbrook of Columbia University examined the phenomenon and found that retailers often “dumb down” the music played in shops to relax customers, meaning it is easier to control their behaviour.
It is thought that slowing down the rhythm of music in shops can trick customers into thinking less time has passed, and therefore spend more time examining the shelves, for example.
Some providers of background music have been known to promote their services by claiming they can boost profits by controlling the behaviour of customers.
“A common trick is to take a popular current song and record an instrumental version which can be slowed down or sped up at different time of the day to influence behaviour in different ways,” Dr.Bradshaw said.
Background music is often classed as “Muzak” in honor of the Seattle-based company which began producing its soft-sounding melodies in the 1930s.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a Saturday. Whether it was sunny or cloudy, hot or cold, I cannot remember, but I do remember it was a Saturday because the mall was full of people.
I was with my mom. It is easy to miss her in a crowd simply because she is so ordinary. On that day we walked casually, taking quick looks at the store windows because we both knew we wouldn’t be buying much, like always.
I remember I was looking up at the people passing by — at first uninterestedly, but then more carefully. Ladies wore bright and elegant clothing. They had no wrinkles (皱纹) on their faces ——wiped away with expensive creams. An uneasy feeling started to settle in my chest. I tried to push it out, but failed. It got more unbearable with every second until I could deny it no longer: I was ashamed of my mother.
We were in a high-class neighborhood, living in a small, expensive apartment building that Mom chose to move to because she knew the schools were good. We were in a high-class neighborhood, but as I observed the passers-by and then turned my eyes on Mom, I realized for the first time that we didn’t belong there. I could see the wrinkles around Mom’s eyes and mouth, because she didn’t use any creams. She dressed in cheap, worn-out clothes. Her eyes were tired from working long hours to make a living and her hair too grey for her age.
I looked at her, feeling ashamed. My mom is nothing extraordinary, yet at that moment she stood out because she was just so plain. Telling her to wait for me around the corner, I hurried away to the bathroom and didn’t want to be seen with her. On the way to the bathroom, my eyes couldn’t help falling on beautiful dresses. Each dress seemed like a work of art with delicate patterns. However, my heart sank as I knew they were far beyond my reach, further reducing my desire to return.
注意:

When I finally went back unwillingly, I found that Mom wasn’t there.
