21、You may feel strange when you’re watching a video of your family. Is that really what your voice sounds like? If you can’t stand the sound of your own voice, you’re not alone. But don’t worry—you’re probably the only one who gets annoyed by its sound.
When you hear an outside sound, like someone else’s voice, the sound travels through your ears, into the ear canal (耳道), and to the eardrum (耳膜). Vibrations (振动) from the eardrum travel to the inner ear, where little hair cells move. Those movements create electric energy. Then the energy is sent up to the brain, which translates it into sound.
That exact same thing happens when you hear the sounds that come out of your own mouth—but something else happens apart from it. As we’re talking, sound waves travel not only outside our body, but there is energy bouncing around in our mouth and throat and through our head, directly to the inner part of our ear. Other people can’t sense the vibrations in your mouth, so you hear your own voice differently than they do.
When listening to your own voice on a recording, you aren’t getting those extra vibrations in your mouth and throat, so you’ll hear what everyone else does. The sudden change can be annoying. It’s unexpected and makes you feel like, “That’s not me.”
To get over your hatred of your own voice, try listening to recordings of it. The more you get used to that, the more you know “That really is my sound.” If you think your voice is truly annoying, you can learn to change your voice’s sound by attending singing lessons, public speaking classes and vocal training courses.

22、 A primary school in Britain has put up signs to warn parents, who are addicted to playing with their phones, to greet their children with a smile rather than stare at their screens. It has become a common sight at the school gates to see children running to their parents, only to find them absorbed in reading news and e-books online, or watching their favorite videos.
Now the headmaster at a primary school in Middlesbrough has put up signs at three entrances to the school. The signs say "Greet your children with a smile, not a mobile. " and a woman holding a phone to her ear is crossed out in a red circle. The headmaster said, “We are trying to develop students' speaking and listening skills and we think it is a simple way to get the message across. It isn't only an issue among patents, but also emphasizes that speaking and listening can help students to have discussions."
The move had different responses. Danielle Parker, a parent, said, "I think the signs are unacceptable because most parents pick their children up with phones." Another parent said, "It's a good thing. Greeting children with smiles can also develop the relationship between parents and children." Some parents when questioned were hesitant about the signs. Landon Bradley, a pupil, said he agreed with the signs, saying, “Why should children see parents playing their mobile phones all the time?”
Last year, research warned that parents' obsession with cellphones had made some neglected children start primary school unable to hold conversations. Almost a third of children are not ready for the classroom when that start school.
【1】Why does the school put up signs at its entrances?
A.To encourage parents to meet pupils with smiles.
B.To describe a common sight of its school gates.
C.To remind pupils to be careful while walking.
D.To introduce the primary school to parents.
【2】What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 2 refer to?

D.It may cause children to lack the ability to communicate.
【4】What is the author's attitude to the signs put up by the school?
A.Approving.
B.Opposed.
C.Objective.
D.Indifferent.
23、Scientists have invented a new type of battery that makes it possible to charge electric vehicles in less than 10 minutes. The innovative design for lithiumion (锂离子) batteries involves a record-breaking combination of shorter charge time and more energy acquired for longer travel range, according to the Penn State University researchers who came up with it.
“The need for smaller, faster-charging batteries is greater than ever,” said Professor Chaoyang Wang from Penn State University, who led the research. “There are simply not enough batteries and critical raw materials, especially those produced domestically, to meet expected demand.”
The fast-charging technology makes it possible for electric vehicles to downsize from 150 to 50 kWh without shortening range, making them cheaper and more efficient. “The smaller, faster-charging batteries will dramatically cut down battery cost and usage of critical raw materials, such as cobalt, graphite and lithium, enabling mass adoption of affordable electric cars,” said Professor Wang.
The breakthrough centres on a novel method for controlling the temperature of the battery, which is needed to optimise its charge time and performance. Until now, this has involved external heating and cooling systems that are inefficient and waste energy.
Regular batteries have three components—an anode, an electrolyte and a cathode—but the fast-charging system adds a fourth that builds in the temperature control system. An ultrathin layer of nickel (超薄镍层) acts as a stimulus to control the battery’s temperature, allowing for 10-minute fast charging for electric cars.
“True fast-charging batteries would have immediate impact,” the researchers noted, “Since there are not enough raw materials for every internal combustion (燃烧) engine car to be replaced by a 150 kWh-equipped EV, fast charging is vital for EVs to go mainstream and become accessible to the public.”
【1】What is the main feature of the innovative battery?
A.Longer travel range.
B.Wider recyclable use.
C.Shortened charge time.
D.More energy consumed.
【2】What does “this” refer to in paragraph 4?
A.The battery’s charge time
B.The breakthrough in batteries.
C.The battery’s performance
D.The method of temperature control.
【3】Why does the author mention regular battery in paragraph 5?
A.To explain a reason.
B.To give instructions.
C.To make comparison.
D.To highlight an opinion.
【4】What do the researchers’ words imply in the last paragraph?
A.Electric vehicles depend greatly on raw materials.
B.The fast-charging batteries have a promising future.
C.The 150 kWh-equipped EVs are bound to go mainstream.
D.Internal combustion engine cars will eventually be replaced.
24、I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for about four hours with my big jeep. I put signs in the windows that said, "Need a jack (千斤顶).”
As I was about to give up,a truck stopped and a man got off. He looked at the situation, made a judgment and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife took a large bottle of water for us to wash our hands.
I tried to put $ 20 in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so I went to give it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked their little girl where they lived, thinking maybe Pd send them a gift. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now,so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches and then go back home.
After I said goodbye and started going back to my jeep, the girl ran to me and handed me a tamale (玉米粽子)for lunch. I thanked them again and walked back to my jeep. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside? My $ 20! I ran to the truck and the guy rolled down his window. He started shaking his head, smiled, and with what looked like great concentration said in English, "Today you, tomorrow me. ” Then he drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back.
This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.
Since then I’ve helped many people like the Mexican family. I didn’t accept their money. Every time I was able to help,I felt as if I was putting something in the bank.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day last June, I picked my son up from afterschool care to take him to the second of his twice-weekly boxing classes. He was tired and hungry and didn’t feel like going. “Can you drive me to the dam (大坝), Mom? I want to find something fun there,” he begged. The Colliery Dam is a pleasant attraction in our town. Beautiful big trees with birds calling, a freshwater reservoir (水库) filled with fish, and acres of paths to wander. But I insisted I had decided that it was important that he finish what he started, and that it was equally important to teach him that sometimes we have to do things even when we don’t feel like it.
Effectively, I was ignoring an eight-year-old’s request for some rest. He went to school five days a week, as well as before and afterschool care; he had a tutor once a week, two boxing classes and gymnastics on the weekend. However, I felt it justified in that he’s a very active boy and needs ways to get out all his energy.
But on this particular day, he was not going to let me ignore his feelings, however hard I tried. He even declared that he would never go to the boring boxing classes and instead take the painting courses he had been longing for. As usual, I rejected, claiming that’s an activity for girls. As we got in the hot car for a 15-minute drive to boxing, he returned to a three-year-old--he screamed and cried and kicked my seat.
We pulled into the parking lot, both of us worn out, annoyed and angry. My son took off his seat belt and curled (蜷缩) into a ball on the floor. What was I doing? Why was I so determined that he go to boxing? Was I worried that his absence would reflect badly on me as a parent somehow? Wouldn’t it actually teach him that I heard he was tired and hungry and needed a break and that it was just as well that boys took painting classes? “Put on your seat belt,” I said. “We’re going to the dam.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
