21、Chuck, unlike other frogs, didn’t like catching flies himself. But he did love eating them.
Some frogs thought Chuck was lazy. Some believed he must think he was too good for them. Some thought Chuck was the strangest frog ever.
That didn’t matter to Chuck. Each morning, Chuck jumped over and sat under the spider’s web. Then when Lady Eightlegs went off to dip (浸) her feet in the pond, Chuck ate flies from her web.
One morning while Chuck was enjoying his fly breakfast, Lady Eightlegs returned and caught him.
“You’re the one who keeps eating my flies!” she cried.
Chuck jumped away and into the pond. Now there was an idea! Why not spin (结) his own web?
He collected some vines (葡萄藤) from a nearby farm. Then he began to spin his web. He worked on his web for hours, until very late at night. And then he fell asleep.
When he woke up the next morning, he found that he got caught by the vines.
“Help!’’ he shouted.
Lady Eightlegs looked up from the edge of the pond. She hurried up to help Chuck out of the vine web.
“No matter how hard I try, I can’t spin a spider’s web,” Chuck said.
“Of course not,” Lady Eightlegs said. “You’re a frog. Frogs can’t spin spiders’ webs any better than spiders can swim, I guess.”
“But I always see you in the water,” Chuck said.
“I only wade in (蹚水) up to my knees, Lady Eightlegs sighed. “How wonderful it would be to swim in the middle of the pond and float (漂浮)peacefully under the sun. ”
Chuck smiled, “I have an idea.”
From that day forward, Chuck carried Lady Eightlegs out to the middle of the pond, where they floated and played together. When they returned to land, they shared a breakfast of flies from the spider’s web.
It wasn’t exactly an ordinary friendship. But Chuck was not an ordinary frog.

22、Roboticists at the University of California San Diego have developed an affordable, easy to use system to track the location of flexible surgical robots inside the human body. The system performs as well as current state of the art methods, but the whole system, including the robot, magnets and magnet localization setup, costs around $100. Many current methods also require exposure to radiation, while this system does not.
The system was developed by Tania Morimoto, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, and mechanical engineering Ph. D. student Connor Watson.
“Continuum medical robots work really well in highly constrained (受限的) environments inside the body,” Morimoto said. “But it becomes a lot harder to track their location and their shape inside the body.” The researchers used existing magnet localization methods, which work very much like GPS, to develop a computer model that predicts the robot’s location.
GPS satellites ping (发送) smartphones and based on how long it takes for the signal to arrive, the GPS receiver in the smartphone can determine where the cell phone is. Similarly, researchers know how strong the magnetic field should be around the magnet placed in the robot. They rely on four sensors that are carefully spaced around the area where the robot operates to measure the magnetic field strength. Based on how strong the field is, they are able to determine where the tip of the robot is.
Morimoto and Watson went a step further. They then trained a neural network to learn the difference between what the sensors were reading and what the model said the sensors should be reading. As a result, they improved localization accuracy to track the tip of the robot. “Ideally we are hoping that our localization tools can help improve these kinds of growing robot technologies. We do want to push this research forward so that we can test our system in a clinical setting and eventually translate it into clinical use,” Morimoto said.

23、Last night, on my way home I stopped because of being attracted by some hamburgers at a fast food restaurant. On my way in, a homeless man approached me and asked, “Do you have any bottles lying around?” I knew he would recycle them for a few cents, but I didn’t have any, so I said no. And again he asked, “Can you spare some change ?” I smiled, and said no again. He was very respectful; he smiled back and said, “OK, thank you.” Even though he didn’t have anything, he was still in good spirits. From the way he spoke I could tell he was smart.
Then I bought one hamburger and enjoyed my meal, but in the back of my mind I wondered whether the homeless man was hungry. After I finished my meal I decided to order another one for him. At this point I didn’t know if he was still around, but I tried anyway.
At the counter I ordered a hamburger and also a hot chocolate, because it was cold outside, and I thought it would help warm him up. They delivered me the hot chocolate first and as I waited for my hamburger, I noticed the homeless man was standing right beside me. I looked at him and smiled, “This hot chocolate is for you.” He replied like a gentleman, “Thank you so much. That’s very kind of you.”
I always believe no matter how____I am, there are always those who are worse off than I. When you help someone, it’s not always about money, it’s about love. The love you give today, someone might forget tomorrow. It doesn’t matter. Love anyway, because the greatest thing you can give is love.

24、Areas with LED streetlights have fewer moth caterpillars (蛾幼虫) living close to the light, possibly having huge effects on an area’s wildlife ecosystem.
“We don’t think of light pollution as being as big a driver of biodiversity loss as climate change,” says Douglas Boyes at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. “But that doesn’t mean it’s not a main factor”.
Earlier research about the effects of man-made light looked at adult insects like moths, which are able to move around and could be counted twice. Moth caterpillars hardly move more than a few metres in their lifetimes, meaning it is easier to be more exact in measuring light’s influence on them.
Boyes and other researchers used Google Maps and Google Street View to find parts of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire in the UK where there were pairs of habitat areas that appeared similar, except that one had streetlights while the other didn’t.
They then counted the number of caterpillars in each 14-metre-long habitat by beating the hedgerows (灌木树篱) and brushing grass margins, finding about eight different species of moth caterpillars. The learn also noted the type of streetlight — whether it was an LED light or an older, yellow, sodium lamp (钠灯) — and the strength of light it produced.
Sites where street lighting was present had 47 percent fewer caterpillars in the hedgerows and 33 percent fewer caterpillars in the grass margins. LED lights had a greater effect than sodium lamps.
Having a lower number of caterpillars is expected to have effects on future moth number and on other wildlife nearby. Small birds and some insects feed on the caterpillars, while larger birds and bats feed on adult moths.
Heather Campbell at Harper Adams University in the UK says the research is helpful for people to know the reasons why insects become smaller in number. “What is really clear from the discussion is how much influence the different types of light are having, with LEDs seeming to be worse for caterpillars,” she says.
【1】What does Boyes say in paragraph 2?
A.Caterpillars are in danger of dying out.
B.Light pollution may harm biodiversity.
C.Many insects may like light very much.
D.Light pollution is as serious as climate change.
【2】The disadvantage of the earlier study lies in ______.

A.They reacted differently to different streetlights.
B.Their eating habits were influenced by streetlights.
C.They preferred hedgerows rather than grass margins.
D.Their numbers increased in areas with streetlights.
【4】What does Campbell think of the present research?
A.It is helpful for studying other insects.
B.It needs to include more types of light.
C.It increases our knowledge of light pollution.
D.It tells the differences between LED lights and sodium lamps.
