二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In March 2019, When Sara Cook first got a letter in the mail telling her that someone had paid off part of her medical debt, she thought it was fake. “It seemed like you have a long-lost uncle and you just inherited two million dollars,” Cook says.

A remarkable nonprofit called RIP Medical Debt had indeed paid $5,000 toward her bills. The former nurse was deeply moved by the gesture. Craig Antico and Jerry Ashton do have good hearts, who have seen how health-related debt has destroyed lives. Since 2014, the men estimate they've spent about $20 million to pay off personal debts. Antico and Ashton get their money from individuals and charities that support RIP’s mission.

Don't bother contacting RIP for help, however. Antico says they used to let people reach out to them, but it was a disheartening experience because they weren't able to help everyone who applied. Instead, RIP researches potential recipients based on three rules. First, they look for people who make not more than two and a half times the amount established as the federal poverty level. Then they screen for those whose medical debt is equal to 5 percent or more of their income. Third, they look to see whether a person is insolvent (破产的).

For the people who do qualify, RIP’s help is life-changing. “After their letter, I realized that my life really doesn't stink (糟糕),” says Cook, “I may never be able to work as a nurse again, but I can sit at the school library and help kids read or serve up food in the soup kitchen. When people do something out of the kindness of their hearts, sometimes they may wonder whether it really makes a difference. I want people to know that this had a positive impact.”

【1】What was Sara Cook's first feeling about the letter?

    A.Grateful.

    B.Unbelievable.

    C.Confused.

    D.Lucky.

【2】What do we know from the passage?

A.All Cook's medical debt has been paid.

B.Antico and Ashton have paid Cook's bill.

    C.Individuals and charities support RIP.

D.The debt has destroyed Cook's life.

【3】Who is most likely to get help from RIP?

A.One who is due to pay huge medical fees.

B.One who submits application to RIP in advance.

C.One whose company is profitless during a long period.

D.One whose earnings are around the federal poverty.

【4】Why does Sara Cook want to serve in other fields?

A.Because she wants to pay back the money.

B.Because she wants to show her life is not bad.

C.Because she wants to prove kindness makes a difference.

D.Because she can't work as a nurse any more.

  • 22、Why I’ve taken a break from holidays

It is now close to four years since I last took a holiday. This is because I have come to the conclusion, over the course of my adult life, that I am not very good at it. You might think this sounds like saying you’re not very good at drinking tea or listening to music. What could possibly be difficult about the natural act of putting your working life on hold for a couple of weeks and going somewhere warm to do nothing?

I was a model holidaymaker as a kid. However, the problems started during my twenties. A trip to the south of France was ended after just two days, mainly because I had an urge to check my e-mails. Similarly, my honeymoon was cut short by 48 hours—not because my wife and I weren’t enjoying ourselves, but because we were missing our cats.

So what is my problem? On the surface, I’m probably a bit of a homebody. And I just find the pressure of being on holiday too severe: it always feels like having a gun held to my head and being forced to have fun. Somehow, packing a list of possessions and meeting a scheduled flight has none of the excitement of suddenly deciding to take a day off and driving somewhere for the fun of it.

Thankfully, I’m not alone. This summer, most of my friends have decided not to have a break. And a recent survey (调查) proved the downside of holidays, with the results showing that nearly two thirds of people found that the calming effects of a holiday wore off within 24 hours, as stress levels returned to normal. And this year The Idler magazine published its Book of Awful Holidays. Here you will find a list of the five most ecologically-damaging vacations it’s possible to take, along with 50 painful holiday experiences voted for on The Idler website.

What interests me is what the concept of a “holiday” says about our lives. For me, the point of living is to have a life you enjoy for 52 weeks a year. The more I like my life and the better I structure it, the less I want to go away. Maybe I’m an unusual person for not liking holidays, but I just feel the time when I’m not working is too valuable to waste on them.

【1】The events the author describes in the second paragraph show ________.

    A. how hard he has tried to enjoy holidays

    B. how badly he behaves when he is on holiday

    C. his lack of enthusiasm for being on holiday

    D. his fear of something bad when he is on holiday

【2】What does the author think of holidays?

    A. They are often well organized in order to please other people.

    B. He feels embarrassed when other people are having fun but he isn’t.

    C. He tends to be made responsible for too much of the organization of them.

    D. They are less enjoyable than breaks that have not been planned in advance.

【3】The underlined word “downside” in the fourth paragraph probably means ________.

    A. absence   B. damage   C. disadvantage      D. conflict

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards “taking a holiday”?

    A. Disapproving. B. Supportive.  C. Neutral.      D. Unconcerned.

  • 23、In 1823, a young woman noticed a strange fossil on a beach near Lyme Regis, England. She dug out the bones and had them carried to her home. She carefully arranged the skeleton on a table. Then she saw something extraordinary. The creature's neck was a meter long-more than half the length of its body. It was unlike any animal living on Earth.

Even at a young age, Mary Anning had a talent for spotting "curies" fossils. Her father died in 1810, leaving her family in debt, so Mary began selling her fossils to collectors. A year later, aged just 12, she made her first major discovery—a crocodile-like skull with a long skeleton. It turned out to be a sea creature that lived long ago. Named ichthyosaur, or "fish-lizard", it was the first extinct animal known to science.

Fossil hunting brought in money, but it was a dangerous occupation. One day, a rock fall killed her dog and almost buried Mary. Despite the dangers, she continued to look for new finds. The long-necked fossil she uncovered in 1823 was another long-dead sea reptile. Known as a plesiosaur, it would inspire legends—including that of the Loch Ness Monster.

Mary was not only a skilled fossil hunter, she also carefully examined and recorded her finds. However, she received little credit from other scientists. Only one of her scientific writings was published in her lifetime, in 1839. She was also not allowed to join London's Geological Society, as only men could become members.

Mary Anning died in 1847, but her contributions have not been forgotten. Her finds are now displayed in museums in London and Paris. The beach near her home is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as the Jurassic Coast. Her life continues to inspire visitors hoping to find their own fossil wonders. According to Britain's Natural History Museum, Mary Anning was "the greatest fossil hunter the world has ever known". She was also a scientist who changed the way we think about life on Earth.

【1】The word “curies" in paragraph 2 means_________.

    A.beautiful

    B.huge

    C.common

    D.unusual

【2】Which of the following is true about Mary Anning?

A.She won high praise from other scientists.

B.She published several scientific articles in her lifetime.

C.She had a narrow escape from a rock fall near the beach.

D.She was later a member of the London Geological Society.

【3】Why does the author mention a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

A.To show how Southern England has the most important fossil finds in the world.

B.To persuade the readers that the Jurassic Coast is in need of protection.

C.To give an example of how important Mary Anning's discoveries are to the world.

D.To encourage more people to find their own fossil wonders.

  • 24、   On a recent spring morning. Susan Alexander, a retired government intelligence analyst, left her Maryland home, climbed into her Volkswagen Passat and drove about three miles to pick up two strangers. She battled rush-hour traffic on the Capital Beltway and George Washington Memorial Parkway before dropping them off at Reagan National Airport. She didn't earn a cent for her trouble, and that was the point.

Alexander is a member of the Silver Spring Time Bank— one of more than 100 such exchanges around the world trying to build community by exchanging time credits for services instead of dollars and cents. “I have time,” she said. “I like giving the gift of time to other people. ”

In Alexander's case, passengers Mary and Al Liepold were grateful for the ride, but it wasn't charity. Mary, a retired writer and editor for nonprofit organizations, used time credits she banked for editing work and baking. Senior citizens who don't drive, the Liepolds cashed in their credits  to catch a flight to Montreal for a five-day vacation.

Without money changing hands or shifting between virtual accounts, the airport drop-off was more like a coffee party than a taxi ride. Driver and passengers chatted about projects they've completed for the time bank, and no one raised an eyebrow when Mary said she likes “to avoid the conventional economy. ”

“The beauty of this is that you make friends,” Mary Liepold said. “You don't just get services.”

The Silver Spring Time Bank formed in 2015 and has about 300 members, said co-founder Mary Murphy. Last year, she said, l,000 hours were exchanged for basic home repairs, dog walking, cooking and tailoring, among other services, without the exchange of money. “ You get to save that money that you would have spent,” she said. “You get to meet somebody else in your community and get to know that person. That's a bonus that's part of an exchange. ”

A deal performed partly to make friends would seem to go against classical economics and one of Benjamin Franklin's most memorable sayings: “Time is money. ” To those at the forefront  of modern time-banking, that is the appeal.

1What's the main purpose of the Silver Spring Time Bank?

A.To build community by exchanging time credits for services.

B.To help people get to know more friends.

C.To provide the elderly with timely financial help.

D.To better serve the local economy.

2How did the Liepolds pay for their ride?

A.In cash. B.By credit card. C.By cheque. D.With time credits.

3What is the suitable title for the text?

A.Time is money B.The more friends, the better

C.Swapping time credits for services D.Giving the gift of time
