二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Mike Mushaw joined the national bone marrow registry (骨髓登记) three years ago by chance. Six months later, he got a call. The 21-year-old football player's bone marrow matched a patient in Virginia. Mushaw gave a second thought to the donation, because apart from some risks, he never knew whether his donation worked.

“Finally I said yes,” Mushaw told the journalist. “Once they took my blood, I thought, ‘All right, this is real. This is going to happen.’”

Mushaw didn't know it at the time, but his donation would go to a five-month-old girl named Eleanor who was sick with a rare disease diagnosed when she was only three months old. Days and weeks passing, her condition had become more dire.

“Eleanor was going to die without a bone marrow transplant,” her mother, Jessica, said. “The choices were to either get a transplant or die early. Luckily, Mushaw’s bone cured her.”

Mushaw didn't know any of this until months after his donation. About six months after the procedure, Eleanor's parents sent him an e-mail to thank him for his selfless love.

Their surprising connection was beginning. Mushaw kept checking on her progress. Eleanor focused her attention on him, too, by watching his football games on TV. In August, Mushaw invited her family to drive from Virginia to Connecticut to meet at one of his games. They had a good time together.

In January, Mushaw reunited with Eleanor, this time in Virginia, to celebrate her birthday. It will likely be first of many celebrations together. “As a parent, it feels really great to watch someone love your kid as much as you do,” Jessica says. “We were two complete strangers, and now we've become such a big part of each other's lives.”

【1】Why did Mushaw hesitate at first?

    A.He was a football player.

    B.He would face some danger.

C.He knew it wouldn't work at all.

D.He didn't know whether his risks were worthy.

【3】Which of the following best describes Mushaw?

    A.Kind but hesitant.

    B.Active and confident.

    C.Worried but energetic.

    D.Selfless and considerate.

【4】What can we learn through Mushaw's story?

    A.Why health matters.

    B.Never make excuses.

C.How to be a good person.

    D.Love brings people together.

  • 27、   It’s been 13 years since The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin passed away and his family is continuing to keep his legacy (遗产) alive. The family continues to carry on the preservation efforts he was so passionate about.

His wife, Terri Irwin, recently revealed that the family officially finished work on an elephant hospital in his honor, which was one of Steve’s greatest dreams.

“We just finished one of his greatest goals,” said Terri to Buzzfeed News. “In Sumatra, when elephants step on a landmine (地雷) or they get caught in a trap, there was no hospital to treat them, and now we have just opened an elephant hospital, so it’s pretty special.”

The Sumatra elephant hospital was constructed and staffed with help from the Australia Zoo in Queensland. “Steve dreamed of opening an elephant hospital after seeing with his own eyes the issues they were facing in the wild,” said an Australia Zoo spokesperson. The new elephant hospital is just one of many projects that the family continues to do in honor of Steve’s legacy, according to his daughter Bindi Irwin.

“We have projects all over the planet, which he was so enthusiastic about and which we’ve continued,” said Bindi. “Helping rhinos and cheetahs in Africa, tigers in Sumatra — it’s so important for us to continue Dad’s legacy and what he loved most, which was wildlife protection.”

The Irwin family is one of the most inspirational families out there and it’s amazing to see how they continue to honor their father with the special work they do.

1What does Terri think of the elephant hospital?

    A.Small. B.Particular. C.Popular. D.Modern.

3What do we know about Steve’s wife and children?

A.They are wealthy people. B.They all follow him blindly.

C.They are deeply affected by him. D.They feel sad for the death of their loved one.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Protecting Wild Animals in Africa Is Urgent

B.In the Eyes of Steve’s Family He Is Still Alive

C.Injured Elephants Are Well Treated in Hospitals

  • 28、To get what you really want in life, what should you do?

【1】To discover that, stop trying to live someone else’s dreams and get rid of other people’s ideas of who you are and who you ought to be.

You need to think about what you’re excited about. Once you’ve found your drive, you’ll know what you want in life. 【2】Your energy will flow also in that direction.

Then you can take the next step and discover your purpose and your real mission (使命) in life. 【3】Think about your talents and the needs of the world. 【4】 It might take time to find the right answer, but start planning it now. Don’t do things only because “you have to”. Whatever you’re doing, ask yourself what you are doing and why you’re doing it. In the end, a clear sense of a mission will improve your performance and it will give you overall satisfaction.

If you expect the support from the world around you and hope for the best, the best will show up. There’s something good in every event that is not positive, too; you need to see it. 【5】 A proven way to learn to recognize the best is to believe that the world is giving you the experiences you need to become the best you can be. Another way to grow as an individual is to set meaningful goals and work hard to pursue them and then you’ll succeed.

A.What do you want your life to be about?

B.You need to know what it is that you want.

C.Give up what you dislike, and you’ll succeed.

F.Some of you always remember the expectations other people have for you.

G.Even a disaster can bring out an opportunity, but only for those who identify it.

  • 29、American folklore (民间传说) is filled with tales of imaginary heroes like Pecos Bill and the Lone Ranger. Yet, besides those characters, there are real historical figures whose lives and fascinating deeds were mythologized (当做神话) over the years. Among them there is an apple grower, known by the popular nickname Johnny Appleseed. This man is said to have traveled on foot across the United States, planting apple trees.

Appleseed's real name was John Chapman. Chapman was widely known by the pioneers settling in the western lands in the 1800s. And the native Indians respected him as a "white medicine man". However, not much is known about Chapman's early life, except that he was born in a north-eastern state in 1774 and that his mother died soon after that, It's also said that he grew up on his father's farm, where apple trees grew.

Appleseed's legend began when he planted his first apple trees in Pennsylvania in 1798. Then, he began traveling west. Walking for miles every day and sleeping outdoors, he planted apple trees near settlements, where he sold them to the pioneers. His apples, which were not suitable for eating due to their bitter taste, were used to make cider (苹果酒). This became a common drink for the pioneers, especially in places where clean drinking water wasn't available.

By 1806, Chapman had been given his new name, and stories about him had spread among the pioneers. Most of these focused on his survival in the wilderness Chapman was also known for his eccentric clothing: instead of a shirt, he wore a cloth bag with holes for his head and arms, and he wore no shoes. He is also said to have carried a bag of apple seeds and have had a meal pot on his head as a hat.

When Appleseed died in 1845, he had walked across three western states. And he was the owner of five square kilometers of land. Appleseed's story was first published in an article in 1871. Yet, not all the details in this article and the ones published later were based on facts. Appleseed's legend has grown over the years through songs, stories and plays and modern-day Disney productions.

【1】What made Chapman a legendary figure?

    A.Planting apple trees.

    B.His travel adventure.

    C.His childhood experience.

D.Inventing a drink made from apples.

【2】What can we learn about Chapman's apples?

    A.They were from Chapman's farm.

B.They were popular among the pioneers.

C.They were not grown in America until 1806.

D.They were not accepted by the native Indians.

【3】What does the underlined word “eccentric” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Traditional.

    C.Casual.

    D.Colorful.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.The mysterious apples
