二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Next time you go on holiday, you might find yourself feeling even more tired than usual.

While this can often be attributed to jet lag, there can often be other reasons why you need to sleep more than usual.

    You’ve got “leisure sickness”

You may find yourself burning out at work right before you go on holiday. 【1】. This then spreads into beach time. Stress levels are found to make the immune system less effective-which sounds about right when you’re trying everything up before you leave the office. 【2】.

    You’re catching up with sleep

Most of us don’t get enough sleep in our day-to-day lives. So heading on holiday and being allowed to sleep as much as you like can be a comfort. 【3】, you can forget what it feels like. Letting your body relax and catch up on that much-needed sleep can leave you feeling more sleepy because you’ re realizing what you’ re missing in your everyday life in terms of sleep.

You’re putting your brain on high alert

You may not feel as relaxed in a foreign bed, which can cause the left side of your brain to stay alert for “danger”. 【4】. If you travel regularly, your brain can get better at learning to turn that function off.

    【5】

If you’re someone who finds it hard to sit around and do nothing on holiday, then it might be that packed journey that has got you yawning. Planning an 8 am sharp boat trip followed by sightseeing before lunch and a museum visit in the afternoon can be pretty exhausting. If you can spare at least a day on holiday, you’ll feel far less tired of the rest of it, when you get back to your jam-packed journey.

    A.You haven’t finished your plan

    B.You’re doing loads of activities

C.But if you haven’t been fully rested for a while

D.The good news is that humans' brains are very flexible

E.It is because you have so much work to get finished before you leave

F.Thus people who are often in new places may not necessarily have poor sleep on a regular basis

G.This can also be applied to getting everything packed, prepared and sorted before you leave the house

  • 27、Caribou Math Competition

    Participants: 2nd graders~high school students

    Cash Prizes: Yes

The Caribou Math Competition is the only worldwide math competition that is held totally online. This contest is held six times throughout the school year, and students that complete all six tests can compete for the Caribou Cup. Each contest engages students in 60 minutes of math puzzles, interactive questions, and a wide variety of problem-solving activities.

Not only is the Caribou Math Competition open to international participants, it also offers contests to elementary (小学) through high school students. The high school level Caribou Math Contests are divided into two age-based categories. Grades 9 and 10 participate in the same contests, and grades 11 and 12 participate in the same contests.

    • 1st place student: $ 100 X percentage score

    • 2nd place student: $75 × percentage score

    • 3rd place student: $ 50 × percentage score

    • 4th and on: $ 30 X percentage score

【2】What is unique about the competition?

    A.It has seven tests.

    B.It lasts sixty minutes.

C.It is held six times every year.

D.It's the only worldwide online math competition.

    【3】How will students be ranked?

A.By their top five contest scores.

B.By the rankings of their schools.

C.By the best score of their six contests.

D.By their scores in the contest for the Caribou Cup.

  • 28、

You’ve been asking for a while now, so we’re agreeing to it, but there are going to be some rules, OK? This is going to be your dog, not Mommy and Daddy’s, which means you will be taking care of him. And taking care of another living thing is a big responsibility.

It’s going to be your job to feed him, to bathe him and to walk him. If he poops, you’re going to clean it. If your dog gets sick, you’ll have to take him to the vet. If he goes to Doggy Heaven, you will have to bury him. If he happens to be buried in a magic place that causes him to come back to life and become a zombie dog, and I know we may sound like a broken record here, it’s going to be your job to take care of him. Dead or undead, it’s still your concern.

If he kills a deer and drags it to our yard, it’s going to be your responsibility to remove that dead deer. Your pet, your dead deer. If he steps things up and kills a human, perhaps a mailman, as his owner, you might be legally involved in that person’s death. If you try to coverup that death and, in a rush, bury him in the same magic place, bringing him back to life too, don’t scream and cry because a zombie mailman is trying to burst into your bedroom. Your pet, your zombie mailman.

If the zombie mailman kills you, will we be upset? Of course we will. You’re our child. And our child didn’t take her pet-ownership duties seriously enough to predict this sort of thing. If we choose to bury you in the same magic place and allow you to come back to life, well need to make one thing absolutely clear. Just because your human life ends doesn’t mean your human responsibilities end with it. Homework is homework. If the dog’s still kicking around, food/walks/baths you know the drill.

So the answer is yes, you can get a dog. Or just stick with your goldfish. Your call.

【1】What can we infer from the underlined part “we may sound like a broken record”?

A.The parents keep playing a broken record.

B.The parents keep reminding their child of her duty.

C.The parents are frightened of a zombie dog.

D.The parents are confident of their child’s ability.

【2】What do we know about the pet dog?

A.He is sure to upset the parents.

B.He is bound to kill a deer or a man.

C.He is expected to become a zombie.

D.He is supposed to be cared for well.

    【3】How is the passage developed?

    A.By comparison.

    B.By analysis.

    C.By assumption.

    D.By debate.

【4】What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

A.To show the responsibilities of raising a pet dog.

B.To show the excitement of raising a pet dog.

C.To persuade the child not to get a pet dog.

D.To persuade the child not to get any pet at all.

  • 29、In New Brighton, Minnesota, the Bartz brothers(Connor, Austin, and Trevor)have built beautiful snow sculptures in their front yard for the past five years. But they’re not ordinary snowmen--they’re huge and sea-themed!

The tradition began in 2012, after a family fishing trip in Florida, where Connor, then 17, caught a puffer fish. It encouraged the boys to make a super-sized fish out of snow. So they got to work, collecting as much snow as possible from around their neighborhood. After eight hours of shoveling(用铲子铲)and sculpting snow their 5-foot-tall puffer fish was complete. And it was a big hit! Before long. the locals and TV reporters began stopping by their front yard to enjoy their creation.

“Each winter, we decide which sea animals would work best and be the most fun to build,” Trevor said. Since 2012, they’ve made a shark, a turtle, an octopus(章鱼)and so, on, Their favorite is the octopus, which they built in 2016. It is their biggest sculpture yet, taking nearly 500 hours(and 150 tons of snow)to make!

The brothers also made sure it was just as much fun for visitors. “We liked that it was kid-friendly, with tentacles(触须)you could slide under,” Connor said. Named by Facebook fans, Octavius the octopus was a star appearing on national news stations.

To make the most of their project, the boys decided to raise money for a good cause. “Given that our work is made from snow, it made sense to collect money to help provide drinking water to people in need,” Austin said. They teamed up with One Day’s Wages, an organization that provides clean water to people in Haiti. By the end of winter, the brothers had raised $17, 263!

Their advice for anyone with big dreams: “If you want to be successful, work hard and have a good attitude,” Austin said. “Success might not come immediately. but take joy in what you are doing now. When we were younger, we made many snow creations that did not make the news, but we still had a pleasurable experience!”

【1】What inspired the Bartz brothers to start their creations?

    D.It attracted wide attention.

【3】What suggestion did the Bartz brothers make?

    A.Think twice.

    B.Learn to be creative.

    C.Start small and enjoy it.

    D.Make use of everything.
