26、The Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 closed on February 20. More than an event, the Games are also for exchanging goodwill and friendship. The design details of various elements such as the medals, emblem(图案) and mascots(吉祥物) serve this purpose. Let’s take a look at these Chinese elements through the designs.
Medals
The front side of the Winter Olympic medals was based on the ancient Chinese jade concentric circle pendants, with five rings representing “the unity of heaven and earth and the unity of people’s hearts”. The opposite side of the medals was inspired from a piece of Chinese jadeware(玉器) called “Bi”, a double jade disc with a round hole in the center.
Emblem
Inspired by the Chinese character “冬” for “winter”, the upper part of the emblem resembles a skater and its lower part a skier. The ribbon-like decoration in between mainly symbolizes the host country’s rolling mountains, Games venues, ski courses and skating rinks.
The blue color in the emblem represents dreams, the future and the purity of ice and snow, while red and yellow—the colors of China’s national flag – present passion, youth and vitality.
Mascots
Bing Dwen Dwen, the cute mascot of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, attracts attention with the panda’s full-body “shell” made out of ice. The inspiration came from traditional Chinese snack “ice-sugar gourd,” (tanghulu), while the shell also resembles a space suit—embracing new technologies for a future of countless possibilities. “Bing” is the Chinese character for ice, which symbolizes purity and toughness. Dwen Dwen is a common nickname in China for children that suggests they are lovely, healthy and clever.

28、Stephanie Terrell bought a used Nissan Leaf this fall and was excited to join the wave of drivers adopting electric vehicles to save on gas money and reduce her carbon footprint.
But quickly Ms. Terrell had something tricky to handle in the road on her journey to clean driving: As a renter, she doesn’t have a private parking space where she can power up overnight, and the public charging stations near her are often in use, with long wait times. The great change to electric vehicles is underway for homeowners who can charge their cars at home, but for millions of renters like Ms. Terrell, access to charging remains a significant barrier.
Now, cities from Portland to New York are trying to come up with charging solutions. For example, drivers string power lines across sidewalks, stand up their own private charging stations and line up at public facilities. The government last month approved plans from all 50 states to roll out a network of high-speed chargers along interstate highways.
“We have a really large challenge right now with making it easy for people to charge who live in apartments,” said Jeff Allen, executive director of Forth, a nonprofit organization that advocates for equality in electric vehicle ownership and charging access. “Cities have to make a mental shift that promoting electric cars is part of their green transportation strategy. Once they make that mental shift, there’s a lot of things they can — and should — be doing.”
Nationwide, there are about 120,000 public charging ports featuring Level 2 charging, slower chargers which take several hours, and a fast charger known as DC Fast. And nearly 1.5 million electric vehicles are registered in the U.S.. This means about one charger per 12 cars nationally, according to the latest Department of Transportation data. But those chargers are not spread out evenly: In California, for example, which has about 39% of the nation’s electric vehicles, there are 16 vehicles for every charging port. In Arizona, the ratio of electric vehicles to charging ports is 18 to 1.
【1】What is Ms. Terrell’s problem?
A.She needs a car charger.

A.Remove slow chargers.
B.Close down some public facilities.
C.Add parking spaces for apartments.
D.Allow drivers to set up their own charging stations.
【3】What does Jeff Allen intend to say?
A.Cities are all willing to promote electric cars.
B.People living in apartments are treated equally.
C.Cities should try to solve the charging problem.
D.People can turn to certain organizations for charging access.

B.The importance of clean driving.
C.The solutions to charging access.
D.The popularity of electric vehicles.
29、 Humans are no strangers to widespread viruses, and each time a vaccine(疫苗)is developed, it gives us hope for the future. Now, the world is waiting for a vaccine to fight COVID-19.
Scientists worldwide have been rolling up their sleeves to work toward an effective novel coronavirus vaccine.
Under the coordination(协调)of the World Health Organization (WHO),up to 172 countries have been engaging with the "largest and most diverse COVID-19 vaccine portfolio",a plan known as the COVAX Global Vaccines Facility.
COVAX is a system for joint purchasing and balancing the risks of multiple vaccines. When a vaccine proves to be safe and effective, all countries within the facility will be able to access it, according to Xinhua.
The plan is aimed to ensure that all countries, no matter their economic status, can get the vaccine in a timely manner when one is available. It also makes sure that prices will be kept as low as possible.
"A number of vaccines are now in the final stage of clinical trials," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Aug 24,adding that the goal of COVAX is to deliver at least 2 billion doses of a vaccine by the end of 2021.
According to the WHO, at present, nine potential vaccines are part of the portfolio.
To guarantee the equal access and fair assignment of COVID-19 vaccines, the WHO has said that the world needs to prevent vaccine nationalism-countries putting their own interests ahead of others in trying to secure supplies of a possible vaccine.
"Vaccine nationalism only helps the virus,"Tedros said, warning that it would lead to a prolonged pandemic(疫情) if only a small number of countries got most of the supply.
"Like an orchestra,we need all instruments to be played in harmony to create music that everyone enjoys," he said.
Vaccine development looks promising,as several countries have made great progress. Russia began production of its first batch of a COVID-19 vaccine on Aug 15, according to its health ministry. It's the world's first registered vaccine. Four Chinese vaccine candidates have started international stage-3 clinical trials.
