26、“Lei ming m ming baak ngo gong ge waa ah? Do you understand what I am saying?” I stare back at the speaker dumbly, my lips parted, the ideas clear in my mind but a response unable to express itself in a language in my distant range. After an uncomfortable pause, a bunch of words spill out of my mouth, sounding forced and unnatural.
The anecdote (轶事) above is a semi-conversation I had in Malaysia years ago. A three-week stay in Malaysia once every few years was often the highlight of my summers — what more can you ask from a food paradise (天堂)? But besides the family, food, and escape that Malaysia offered, trips also brought accompanying feelings of guilt that I just couldn’t seem to translate. For one month every few summers, I got a taste of what it feels to be an outsider in my own culture. I was a girl lost in translation, passively absorbing the various tongues shouted between the stalls (摊位) in the wet markets, quietly nodding along at my grandparents’ huge family dinners.
In America though, I am a different person. I don’t think twice about my grammar when speaking. I don’t struggle with the words and fear that my logic and stories won’t get through to people. So as a native English speaker, I do not have to worry daily about whether I’m judged for having an accent or whether I’m misunderstood across languages. In Malaysia, I naturally burst out “have you eaten?” instead of recalling the Malaysian equivalent “you makan already?” In Malaysia, everything about the way I speak — my accent, intonation, sentence structure, slang — gives me away. My American-ness is seen in the way I talk, dress and act. Maybe my face could pass for a Malaysian local, but once I open my mouth to speak I am so clearly not. It is uncomfortable and awkward, and sometimes I wonder if I did not look Asian at all would it be better, since there would be no more language expectation for me than for a white tourist.

27、Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
【1】Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A.Talking about their lifestyles.
B.Introducing their after-school activities.
C.Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D.Answering questions about screen time use.
【2】What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A.They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B.Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C.Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D.Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
【3】What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A.Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B.High screen time is common among teenagers.
C.No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D.Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
【4】Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A.They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B.They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C.They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D.They allow teenagers to become better learners.
28、Everybody hates rats (big mice). But in the earthquake capitals of the world-Japan, Los Angeles,Turkey- rats will soon be man’s best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelt that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christiane Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of the International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be wonderful. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course)
【1】Why will rats become man’s best friends in earthquake capitals of the world?
A.Because they can get into small spaces.
B.Because they can take the place of man’s rescue jobs.
C.Because they can find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings.
D.Because they can serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings.
【2】How can the rescuers judge whether a person is alive?
A.By the noise made by the rat.
B.By the rat’s unusual behavior.
C.By the smell given off by the person.
D.By the signal sent by the radio on the rat’s back.
【3】Which of these statements is NOT the advantage that rats have?
A.They don’t need electricity.
B.They are more lovely than other animals.
C.They are less expensive to train than dogs.
D.They are small and can get into small places.
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A.The “rat project” has been completed.
B.People are now happy to see a rat in a building.
C.Now people still use dogs and robots in performing rescues.
D.At present rats have taken the place of dogs in searching for people
29、 On a hot July day in Fairfax, Virginia, the couple team Christopher Pei and Zhang Guifeng are training their students while observing their emotions before their USA Wushu Kungfu Federation National Team Trials (选拔赛).
“They are so nervous because they are experiencing competition anxiety," says Pei, co — founder of US Wushu Academy. "The anxiety allows me only an hour of sleep every night during the competition.”
Wushu is a sport that combines elements of performance and martial arts. The USAWKF National Team Trials happen every two years. Coaches and students get up at 7 am each day to practice for the trials. For 30 years Pei and Zhang have been working in Wushu education.
Pei, who is in his 60s, moved to the United States from China with his family in 1972. “When we moved to Vestal, New York, I did not know any English and started learning English from alphabets," Pei says. "So I figured it might be a better idea to start learning Wushu in case I got into a fight and could protect myself." He later realized Wushu is composed of two Chinese characters, "zhi" (it) and "ge" (戈) which means to stop fighting.
The couple opened (heir first academy in Virginia in 1988. Students start as kindergartners and many continue all the way to college.
Chinese culture emphasizes mastering both literacy and martial arts in order to become a complete person. Zhang believes Wushu helps youth develop concentration because its two main principles include focus and respect. "Many parents who grew up in the U.S. as second- or third-generation Chinese need their children to not only learn traditional Chinese culture but also the correct way to become a better person," Pei says.
They devote six days of the week to Wushu education. Sunday is the only day when their attention is not on their students. 'Learning Wushu is difficult, Pei says. "But the students don't easily give up.”
