26、Just before Italy’s second lockdown in November 2020, the banks of Milan’s Grand Canal were busy with people. Bargain hunters picked their way through market stalls. 【1】 The clear water of the canal reflected the dazzling autumn sunshine.
This is a familiar scene in Milan’s Navigli district on the last Sunday of every month. Located in the city’s south-west corner, the Navigli district remains one of the last true connections the Milanese have with water. The Grand Canal (Naviglio Grande) itself dates back to 1177.
Although not widely known, Milan’s centre was once traced with waterways, like those of Venice. 【2】 London has the Thames. Paris, the Seine. Berlin was built around the banks of the Spree. Yet, Milan, one of the wealthiest cities in Europe, has none. The city had to make one for itself. Between the 12th and 17th centuries, a network of canals was developed in order to grow the city’s wealth and influence.
Most of the last traces of this network can be seen in Navigli. The rest fell victim to modernisation during the mid-20th century. As automobiles and trains replaced boats, the Inner Ring was buried under concrete (混凝土). For the most part, the canals are still there, covered over by new roads and buildings.
【3】 The Darsena sits at the meeting point of two of Milan’s last canals, Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese. Once one of Italy’s busiest ports, the harbourside area has lain largely unused since the 1960s. In 2015, it was completely renovated for the Milan Expo.
Today, the Darsena provides a vital lung to one of Europe’s most polluted cities. Every day, people walk along its banks or sit with a takeaway drink from the many bars which are located nearby. Old men teach their grandkids the patient art of fishing, while runners trace loops around the boardwalk. 【4】
Currently, designs are being drafted for an underground tunnel to allow the water to pass through the city’s centre. It is hoped that the project will be completed by 2026 when Milan is set to co-host the Winter Olympics.
A.It will help the Milanese to live better lives.
B.We have to see the re-opening as a big project for redeveloping the city.
C.Think of almost any major inland city and there’s a big river to go with it.
D.Others sat in cafes, sipping coffee while gazing out at the city’s shoppers.
E.In more recent years, there has been a new energy around Navigli, which flows from the Darsena (meaning “dock”).
F.Its ongoing popularity long after the Expo has led to an ambitious project to completely re-open Milan’s Inner Ring.
27、 A huge colored map of the Silk Road from a royal court of the mid-Ming Dynasty was officially welcomed home at the Forbidden City in Beijing on Thursday.
The 30-meter-long by 59-centimeter-wide map, named the Landscape Map of the Silk Road, is painted on silk. It describes trade routes starting at Jiayuguan, at the western end of the Great Wall during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), through Central and West Asia to the Middle East.
As many as 221 cities in what now are some 10 countries are on the map. key places on the ancient Silk Road included Gansu province’s Dunhuang, Mecca, Damascus, Esfahan in Iran and Samarqand in Uzbekistan.
The map’s return was made possible as a donation from Hui Wing Mau, a Hong Kong-based real estate entrepreneur, who paid $20 million for it this year.
“The map, with plenty of geographic information, proves that China had the world’s best mapping skills at that time,” said Lin Meicun, a history professor from Peking University, at the receiving ceremony on Thursday. “It also shows Chinese people had a clear understanding of the outside world before Western maps came into the country,” he added.
Lin said it’s a pity that one-fourth of the original drawing, showing the route from Mecca to Istanbul, was lost, based on a modeling board for this map he found in historical records. “Maybe that part was cut off by some antique trader to sell separately,” he said.
Shan Jixiang, director of the Palace Museum, said “The map is a devotion of ancient Chinese geography to the whole world. It shows the frequent business and cultural communication between China and countries along the ancient Silk Road.”

28、The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt:“The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?”I shook my head stubbornly-and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally,at about lunchtime,I got lucky.
“If you come by right now,”the receptionist said,“the dentist will fit you in.”
I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?
In the dentist’s office,I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my icecold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said,“Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.”
“How long do I have to wait for him?”I asked impatiently.
“Come on,he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,”the assistant said.

29、In the days before the Internet, critical (批判性的) thinking was the most important skill of well-educated people. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a social scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Human Development, an even more important skill is “critical ignoring”.
As the researchers point out, we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete (竞争) for our attention. They attract us with a lot of emotional and eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can expose (暴露) us to money-making advertisements. Therefore, we are no longer customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention. To protect ourselves from this, Kozyreva calls for learning the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers control their information environment on purpose to reduce exposure to false and low-quality information.
According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring includes three strategies. The first is to design our environments, which involves getting rid of the low-quality yet hard-to-resist (抵制) information from around. Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes. Similarly, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-grabbing items are kept out of sight. As with dieting, if one tries to depend on willpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it's better to just keep them out of sight in the beginning.
The next is to make a judgement about whether the information is reliable, so that you can be protected from false and misleading information. It can be realized by checking the source in the top news media which is widely considered as being trustworthy.
The last goes by the phrase “do not feed the trolls”. Trolls are actors who spread false and hurtful information online on purpose to cause harm. It may be appealing to respond to them to set the facts straight, but trolls just care about annoying others rather than facts. So, it’s best not to reward their bad behaviour with our attention.
By improving our critical ignoring skills in these ways, we can make the most of the Internet while avoiding being hurt by those who try to control our attention, time, and minds.
【1】What is “critical ignoring”?
A.The process of spotting and analyzing poor quality data.
B.The skill of not paying attention to online information.

D.The art of choosing what information you let into your life.

A.To discuss the quality of information.

B.Turn a deaf ear to them.

A.Importance of critical ignoring in online search.
