四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Space vegetables are grown from seeds (种子) that have been taken to space and brought back to the earth. The seeds are affected by the radiation (辐射) and low gravity in space. When they are brought back to the earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger and healthier than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could make us get sick because of the radiation in space. However, people should not be frightened because space vegetables are very healthy.

Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables.

Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully chosen. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that they will be safe to eat.

Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes.

After genetically modified (转基因) food appeared in the market, people worried that they were eating unknown things. For example, if nut genes (坚果基因) are put inside potatoes, people allergic to nuts might get sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified food, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, there are no dangers of eating something unknown.

【1】The seeds brought back from space produce ______ vegetables according to the passage.

    A.more delicious

    B.healthier and bigger

    C.more dangerous

    D.cheaper and healthier

【2】Genetically modified food is different from space vegetables because it ______.

    A.is grown in space

    B.has nothing unknown

    C.has been genetically changed

    D.has no new genes

【3】According to the passage, normal tomatoes can stay fresh for about ______ days.

    A.seven

    B.thirteen

    C.twenty

    D.twenty-seven

【4】The underlined word “allergic” means “______” in Chinese.

    A.过敏

    B.种植

    C.发现

    D.出售

【5】The writer wants to tell us that ______.

A.space vegetables are grown in space

B.everybody worries about eating space vegetables

C.space vegetables are safe and good for people to eat

D.space vegetables may bring illness to us because of the radiation in space

  • 25、I decided at 10 that I was going to be a teacher because I had a burning desire for superpowers. As a boy, I could clearly see some of my teachers had extraordinary powers.

There was an English teacher in fifth grade who could magically transport us to different worlds every day by telling us stories and reading to us from books we would otherwise never pick up. This was our secret and fun time because fifth graders were considered too old to have stories read out to them.

It was even shocking that my teacher could see the invisible. I was one of those who lacked insight. Yet my teacher would notice me and the unspoken message in her eyes suggested that she could see me through. She had another superpower and even after four decades. I could still vividly remember her lessons about the great masters of art and great geographers, expanding our horizons. She did this even though her major was not art, nor geography. Her lessons went beyond the textbook. I knew I wanted to be one of those all-seeing ones with superpowers that made children feel safe and valued.

I know being a teacher isn’t the easiest or the most financially rewarding of jobs. And there are occupational risks-your knees can become worn out from years of carrying piles of notebooks up and down the school staircase, your voice can give in from too much talking. But despite all that, there are those choosing this cause. To them, teaching is not just a job-it is a science, an art and a craft, and it demands emotional labour and investment.

All my life, for three decades now, I’ve gone to work early each day with a spring in my step. Occasionally, I meet my former students. Their obvious love for me and fond memories of our time together are my rewards. When I meet others who thirst for superpowers, like the brand new teacher struggling to perfect her skills with a brave face on, or the one in a remote, rural school travelling 70 kilometers each day just for his pupils, I feel proud to belong to the same group.

【1】What can be inferred about the stories from paragraph 2?

A.They were told in a magic way.

B.They were written by the teacher.

C.They contained some students’ fun secrets.

D.They left the students with happy memories.

【2】Which of the following best describes the English teacher?

    A.Honest and generous.

    B.Hard-working and wealthy.

    C.Caring and modest.

D.Knowledgeable and good at noticing things.

【3】What do we know about the author as a teacher?

A.He suffered a lot in his knees and voice.

B.He thought teaching was more than spreading knowledge.

C.He had some ideas of how to be a teacher at a young age.

D.He was rewarded with much money for his devotion at school.

【4】From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.

A.the author is really a great teacher

B.rural school teachers are working hard

C.all the students love the author

D.young teachers think it difficult to teach

【5】The author’s writing purpose is probably to ________.

  • 26、   Japan fixes English

You’ve probably seen some pretty “interesting” English translations. For example, it is common to see “Chinglish” on restaurant menus and on signs in public areas in China.

Japan is now working to improve its English signs so that tourists will have an easier time getting around during the 2020 Olympics.

Improving public transportation signs is especially important, as tourists will take trains and buses to get around. The Japan Tourism Agency recently carried out a two-month investigation into the websites of 85 train and bus companies around the country.

The agency found some rather odd translations. For example, one transportation company refers to children as “dwarfs(侏儒)”. Other transportation errors include “Forgotten Center” for “lost and found”, and “release place” for “ticket machine”.

But does Japan have enough time to correct its English? One expert thinks it’s too late. Gregory Hadley, a professor at Niigata University, thinks it can’t be done. He pointed out that many companies simply won’t be able to afford to hire translators and reprint their materials.

In addition, the people who originally translated the materials probably won’t want to lose face by admitting to translating them correctly, he added.

Whether it can fix its signs or not, Japan is preparing for a wave of tourism. About 30 million people visited the country last year and the number will hit 40 million next year, when the 2020 Olympics officially kick off.

1In Japan, which of the following is the most important to improve before the 2020 Olympics?

    A.Restaurant menus. B.Tourist information centers.

C.Public transportation signs. D.Public restroom signs.

2A “Forgotten Center” probably refers to “________” in Japan.

A.dwarfs B.a lost and found area C.a ticket machine D.a youth hostel

3What is Gregory Hadley’s opinion about Japan’s English signage situation?

A.There are too many simple transportations in Japan.

B.Improving signs in public areas is important.

C.Changing incorrect signs makes companies lose face.

D.Japan won’t be able to finish correcting its English in all public areas.

4Compared to last year, the number of people who visit Japan will increase by________next year.

    A.10 million. B.20 million. C.30 million. D.40 million.

5What does the underlined phrase “kick off” mean in Chinese?

    A.踢开 B.爆发 C.开始 D.反冲
