  • 21、Particulate Matter

There are things floating around in the air. Most of them, you can not even see. They are a kind of air pollution called particles or particulate matter. In fact, particulate matter may be the air pollutant that most commonly affects people’s health.

    Have a Look.

Particles can come in almost any shape or size, and can be solid particles or liquid droplets.1 These two groups differ in many ways. One of the differences is size, we call the bigger particles PM 10 and we call the smaller particles PM 2.5.

    BIG.

The big particles are between 2.5 and 10 micrometers (from about 25 to 100 times thinner than a human hair). These particles are called PM 10 (we say ―PM ten, which stands for Particulate Matter up to 10 micrometers in size).2

    SMALL.

The small particles are smaller than 2.5 micrometers (100 times thinner than a human hair).3We say ―PM two point five, as in Particulate Matter up to 2.5 micrometers in size. The smaller particles are lighter and they stay in the air longer and travel farther. PM 10 particles can stay in the air for minutes or hours while PM 2.5 particles can stay in the air for days or weeks. And travel? 4 PM 2.5 particles go even farther; many hundreds of miles.

    Particulate Matter and Your Health.

When you breathe, you take in the air along with any particles in the air, like heavy metal sand cancer causing organic compounds. Both PM 10 and PM 2.5 particles can cause health problems, specifically respiratory (呼吸的) health.5 Exposure to particulate matter leads to increased use of medication and more visits to the doctor or emergency room.

A.These particles are called PM 2.5.

B.We divide particles into two major groups.

C.These particles cause less severe health effects.

D.PM 10 particles can travel as much as 30 miles.

E.Air pollution is a growing problem in the whole world.

F.PM 2.5 can have worse health effects than the bigger PM 10.

G.Air pollutants have great effects on our environment and our health.

  • 22、   If a president, a philosopher, and one of the best-selling writers credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise.” Charles Dickens: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.”

Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking and producing ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside-compared with on a treadmill(跑步机)-produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. Our creative thinking is triggered(触发) by physical movement, which is exactly why walking-with your dog, a friend, or alone - feeds creative thinking.

The scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Breaking your routine with a walk can be a catalyst for fresh understanding of problems or projects. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your familiar surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighborhood. You can walk through a park and observe people joking or birds singing. Being inside, you’re more likely to be lifeless, which means you don’t have enough energy to wonder or create.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings. Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a puddle(小水坑).

  • 23、   When I was kid, I’d often come downstairs for breakfast and find my grandmother in the kitchen talking to herself, often going over what she was going to do that day. I thought it was the strangest thing. 【1】

Back then, I thought healthy people didn’t talk aloud when nobody else was around, did they? 【2】 It is a healthy, widespread behavior among children and adults. Research suggests the practice is most beneficial when it combines thought and action. Talking to yourself, when employed in the proper context, can even energize you mentally. Encouragement helps a person gain self-confidence and self-esteem, which contribute to success.

A study published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise had 72 tennis players take part in five rounds of play: one baseline assessment, three training sessions, and a final round. 【3】. Though both groups followed the same training program, only the experimental one was asked to practice self-talk. By the final assessment, the experimental group showed heightened self-confidence and reduced anxiety. The self-talkers also improved their game.

【4】 An in-depth analysis looked at the validity of the self talk strategy for improving athletic achievements. Totaling 32 sport studies and 62 effect sizes, it showed a positive, though moderate, effect size.

【5】 As Dr. Julia Harper, an occupational therapist said, “If we’re talking to ourselves negatively, research suggests that we’ll more likely guide ourselves to a negative outcome. However, when self-talk is neutral - as in a statement like ‘What do need to do?’ or positive, such as ‘I can get this done,’ then the outcome is much more effective.”

A.Researchers divided the players into two groups.

    B.Participants with low self-confidence don’t like self-talk.

C.Unfortunately, human nature is ready for negative self-talk.

D.This effect only holds true if one’s self-talk remains encouraging.

E.These performance-energizing benefits aren’t just for tennis players either.

F.In fact, science has now shown that talking to yourself has a number of benefits.

G.Even though nobody else was around, hearing her would make me feel awkward.

  • 24、   A dance held last Saturday in Central High School's gym raised $2,348 to help rebuild the home of freshman Keisha Kandun and her family.

Admission to “Rock the House” was $10; all money went to the Kandun Family Fund. Volunteers also walked the dance floor with donation boxes to collect more money.

The Kanduns are living with Keisha's grandparents until they can move into their new house. The whole family attended the dance; then they went on stage to thank the crowd. Rebuilding has already begun, and the family hopes to move back in time for the holidays.

“We appreciate the help so much that I cannot even put it into words,” said Mary Kandun, Keisha's mother. “We have always loved the school, but we never expected this kind of generosity. You should all be proud of your school for showing so much heart.”

The Kanduns' four-bedroom home was empty on August 14 when it caught on fire after being struck by lightning. Sadly, the family did not have enough insurance to pay for the cost of rebuilding.

Central High School Student Council organized the event with the help of advisor and English teacher Lois Conrad and Principal David Cordero; The student council also plans to hold a bake sale and a car wash, sponsored by Speedy Clean Inc. to raise more money.

The dance featured the music of the Harlequins. The four members of the band, seniors at Central, donated their time to perform.

“It's cool to be able to play for your fellow classmates,” said Adam Flynn, who plays the guitar for the band. We wanted to help out Keisha and her family, too.

“The band was awesome,” said senior Neil Lukowski, who went to the dance with several friends. It was a fun night for a good cause.

【1】What do we know about the Kandun family?

B.They hadn't expected such help from school.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Zaha Hadid

Born in Iraq in 1950, Zaha Hadid was the first woman to win the Pritzker prize, the field’s highest honor. But for years, she had to fight to prove that her designs could even be built. She was a pioneer in Deconstructivism: Designing buildings that looked unstable, jagged, or frozen in mid-explosion. She gained a reputation for her gorgeous, fantastical designs—painted by hand. But her ideas looked impossible to build, so they remained on paper.

Then, in 1983, she won a big competition to design a club in the hills of Hong Kong. Hadid proposed carving chunks out of the mountainside, which she called a “man-made geology.” The project was eventually canceled, but the world of architecture then knew her name.

Still, it took another decade before one of her concepts actually got built: A fire station in Germany with no right angles; looking like it could take flight. It was a great success—quickly becoming a prime example of Deconstructivist architecture.

Around the same time, she won an international competition to design an opera house in Wales, but it was overruled by local politicians, and the funding was pulled. Later, Hadid said it was resistance and prejudice that killed the project.

But she kept winning competitions, building momentum—and finally, buildings! By the early 2000s, she was an architecture superstar. She still drew by hand, but adopted new computer technology to model her designs. The software made even wilder shapes possible—including the curves that became her signature. A Hadid design was no longer crazy or impossible—it was simply a Hadid.

Sadly, she died of a heart attack in 2016. By then she had built hundreds of buildings, with many more in progress. And she had proved she could build nearly anything she could imagine.
