二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   This may sound like a joke about a lazy person’s dream job. Earn big money by staying in bed and watching TV. But this is really happening, and it’s a project of NASA and two European space agencies the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the Cologne-based German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. I’s called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study, aimed at studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space.

Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery, The first 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study.

Participants spend two entire months in bed and remain lying down even to do everyday things like eating, drinking and exercising. They also answer nature’s call and shower, but it’s unclear from the NASA website how those tasks are accomplished in bed.

“Daily routine showering, getting dressed, eating, exercising takes much time when you cannot stand up to do them,” says the website, adding that there is “continuous data collection”, including blood pressure, heart rate, nutrient absorption and also the participants’ feelings. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tiled down six degrees, which imitates conditions in space.

Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, taking online courses, reading and any other activities they can perform while lying down alone in bed to relieve what could be boredom. Family and friends are allowed to visit.

The high $ 18,500 payment for two months of lazing about is probably a major motivation for people willing to go through something this extreme. However, if you’re an American who really needs the money, you probably can’t afford it. Candidates need to travel to Cologne four times at their own expense for the employment process between April and July. Plus, they need strong German-speaking skills Also participants need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55, in good health, with normal body weight.

1What are participants expected to do during the study?

A.Report their feelings regularly. B.Complete their daily routines in bed.

C.Keep their bodies tilted down six degrees. D.Record their physical responses every day.

2What data about the participants will the researchers collect?

A.The changes in their weight. B.Their behaviors to weightlessness.

C.The ways they do their daily things D.Their physical and mental reactions

3What will be a challenge for the participants?

A.The language skills they need. B.The difficulty meeting family.

C.The possibility that they feel dull. D.The slow discovery of their health.

4The requirements for potential participants are__________.

A.challenging for Americans B.tailored to thin persons

C.easy for the youth to satisfy D.suitable for most people

  • 22、   The AI project intends to use artificial intelligence to create an innovative (创新的) theatrical performance, which is expected to premiere (首演) early next year. Head of the research team Rudolf Rosa said: “The main idea behind our study came from Tomáš Studeník, an innovator who noticed the centenary of the play ‘RUR’ is approaching. “This was a key moment for robotics, as the idea of a robot, including the word ‘robot’ itself, was invented by Karel Capek and his brother Josef wrote this play.

“Tomáš believed this should be properly celebrated and formulated the idea of turning the story around: 100 years ago, a man wrote a play about robots; what if today, robots wrote a theatre play about men?”

While there are now numerous papers focusing on machine-produced art, including some where computational techniques were used to produce dialogues or story ideas for plays, the automatic generation of an entire theatrical performance is an extremely complex task never-before attempted.

Rosa’s team decided to split the production of their play into several sub-parts. Although other research teams have used this approach to generate dialogues, few have attempted to produce an entire play. Dr Rosa said: “Thanks to the approaching anniversary, our main target is clear and fixed: by January 2021, we need to have a play ready for premiere. As it will be performed by a professional theatre group, we need to have the script ready in September, so that there is enough time for rehearsals (彩排).”

The researchers started experimenting with pre-trained language model called GPT-2. Once adequately trained, GPT-2 is able to complete unfinished texts using similar language and covering related themes. For example, if GPT-2 is fed the first paragraph of a news article, the model will try to continue to write a few additional paragraphs on the same topic, using the existing text for inspiration, while generating sentences about new concepts.

【1】How did Rosa’s team plan to do the project?

A.By cooperating with other research teams.

B.By dividing their work into few small sections.

C.By exploring the possibility of creating dialogues using AI techniques.

D.By staging an entire play directly performed by professional theatre group.

【2】What can be learned from the text?

A.The play will be on show in September.

B.GPT-2 can perform an entire play with ease.

C.Machines are still not smart enough to create art.

D.AI techniques have been applied to create dialogues for plays.

【3】What does the text tell us?

    A.GPT-2 can practice continuation writing.

B.The play RUR was written by Karel Capek.

C.The idea of a robot was born half a century ago.

D.The word “robot” was coined by Tomáš Studeník.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

    A.“Robotre” Staged Successfully

    B.“Mechatre” Trained Inadequately

    C.“Mantre” Story Completed by Humans

D.“AItre” Play Written Entirely by Machines

  • 23、Punks, Ravers, Mods and Teddy Boys. No, these aren't some hot new bands, but the names of a number of British youth subcultures(亚文化) from the last 70 years.

Youth Club, a UK not-for-profit organization, released a book earlier this year celebrating many different subcultures from throughout Britain s recent history.

"A catalyst(催化剂) for creativity on the worldwide stage, British youth culture movements from the Teddy Boys of the 1950s to the grime Scene of the 2000s continue to play a pioneering role in music, fashion and creativity across the globe," it wrote on its website.

These subcultures were traditionally a way for young people to show their personalities to others. Walking around London in the 1970s would have meant seeing dozens of young "punks" - people dressed in ripped denim(破洞牛仔裤), leather jackets, body piercings(穿孔) and with brightly-dyed hair—on the streets. And in the90s, “ravers” were young people who threw all-night parties in abandoned buildings or car parks.

So, what was the reason behind these subcultures?

"On both sides of the Atlantic, more and more young disappointed teenagers were looking for an escape from the boredom and constraints(约束)of society, "wrote lan Youngs, BBC entertainment reporter. "Unemployment, racial tensions and social upheaval (剧变)added fuel to their fires."

Youth subcultures have all but disappeared in the West. Some experts believe the reason for this is the instant and low-priced availability of music and clothing in the internet age.

"Fashion and music, they’re much cheaper and they’re much faster today, " Ruth Adams, a culture lecturer at Kings College London told The Guardian.

"When I was a teenager, you had to stick to one type of music or fashion, because it cost more money. Now, it' s all a bit more blurry(模糊不清的),” she said, believing that it's harder to figure out someone's personality or music tastes nowadays just by looking at them.

Despite this, Adams believes that today’s young people are still finding their own way to express themselves, but in a more modern way.

"It's certainly happening online," she said. "It's a lot easier to use personas(伪装) online just by showcasing certain types of mysterious knowledge."

1According to the text, British youth subcultures____.

    A. could be traced back to the 1970s

    B. were started by Youth Club to promote creativity

    C. were a way for youth to express their identities

    D. had a greater impact on fashion than music

2What contributed to the popularity of these youth subcultures?

    a. Young people's desire for freedom and fun.

    b. Young people's longing for fame and wealth.

    c. The social pressure young people suffered.

    d. The easy access to music and clothing.

    A. a b

    B. a c

    C. b d

    D. c d

3Which of the following would Ruth Adams probably agree with?

    A. Music and fashion trends develop too fast for young people to follow today.

    B. Young people today are less willing to express themselves as her peers did.

    C. Young people today are less interested in music and fashion than her peers used to be.

    D. The internet makes it harder to figure out the personalities of young people today.

4What's the author' s attitude toward subcultures?

    A. Objective

    B. Negative

    C. Doubtful

    D. Supportive

  • 24、   Every day around the world, thousands of people with little to no scholarly training in art history walk into museums. They may or may not read notice boards that share relevant information of the artworks or artists. Imagine, before being permitted to direct their eyeballs to the art on the walls, museum visitors were required to read a 15- or 20-page introduction to each piece or each artist. How many people would go to museums if that were the case?

Yet this seems to be the expectation when it comes to reading classic literature. Classic novels typically come with 15- or 20-page introductions, which often include spoilers, assuming that readers do not come to classic books to discover, be absorbed in, and be surprised by the story world. Also, apparently, we mustn’t read classics alone, without experts guiding our experiences.

However, classic literature is in a unique position to show us that we’re not alone in our pains and joys. By taking us out of our time, classic books free us to see beyond the set of beliefs we stick to and to connect human experiences that remain alive across time and place. What could be more grounding, more comforting, than seeing ourselves in the battles, longings, and pleasures that have played out across hundreds, thousands of years of human history? Our personal engagement is the first step of a longer journey of discovery that deepens our knowledge and understanding of ourselves and our world. We may, for example, feel for Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter though we despair of the world she lived in.

While we’re letting go of things, let’s stop worrying about understanding everything. We can’t. It will be fun if we embrace curiosity, the pleasure of working out a mystery, and our common relationships as humans. We can feel, for example, the power of self-sacrifice in Charles Dickens’A Tale of Two Cities even when we lack full understanding of the cultural references and language.

    1Most museum goers ________.

    A. enjoy reading notice boards B. understand the artworks well

    C. lack professional art knowledge D. share common interest in artworks

2What can the spoilers in Para.2 possibly be ?

    A. Story writers. B. Readers’ expectations.

    C. Guiding experts. D. Plots given away in advance.

3What prevents readers enjoying reading classics?

    A. Showing curiosity about the writers. B. Letting go of things.

    C. Trying to understanding everything. D. Working out mysteries.

4What message is mainly conveyed in the passage?

    A. We should find more fun from classics.

    B. Reading classics is a personal exploration.

    C. Experts need to give readers better guidance.

    D. Classic literature benefits readers a great deal.
