  • 22、In 1986, I watched my first soccer match on my parents’ big box television. I was six, and ever since then, I have dreamed of attending the World Cup.

This year, I traveled to Brazil to make my dream a reality. The first match I attended was between Australia and Spain. Within minutes of walking into the stadium, I found myself surrounded by the excited fans, talking and cheering together. Unlike what one normally sees on the news, this match was mainly peaceful except for one fight. When the fight started, the whole section began chanting(呼喊)with one voice, asking those fighting to stop. When they didn’t, the rabble-rousers were sent out by security guards minutes later.

What struck me about the games I attended was the sense of camaraderie. I met soccer fans from different countries. Sometimes we were cheering for the same team and sometimes for opposite teams, but that didn’t stop us from becoming friends. The stands were not divided between teams, and the interaction was often spirit-lifting.

I also watched the game in Sao Paulo that ousted(淘汰)Brazil from the World Cup. I was with friends at a large bar which hosted a mix of Brazilian and German supporters. As Germany scored one goal after another, the sadness and even tears were visible on the faces of Brazilians. But German fans came to the Brazilians to comfort them and apologize that the game was ending with such a big gap. Everyone was hoping for a good match.

What I love about the World Cup is that it provides a chance for people to learn about other countries and cultures. People learn about the countries of the teams they support and about their opponents’ history and culture. Soccer is a game that not only gives people the chance to learn about each other but also has the potential to unite people.

Sports can be a dividing force, but the true spirit of sports is about unity and fun. The matches at this World Cup have been exactly that so far, and I hope it remains so.

  • 23、When robots and humans interact in a shared environment, it is important for them to move in ways that prevent conflicts or accidents. To reduce the risk, roboticists have developed numerous techniques that monitor an environment, predict the future actions of humans, identify safe trajectories (轨迹) for a robot and control its movements accordingly.

Predicting human behavior and movements, however, can be incredibly challenging. Determining the future movements of a robot, on the other hand, could be far easier. If human users could anticipate the movements of robots and the effects these will have on the surrounding environment, they should then be able to easily adapt their actions in order to avoid accidents .

With this in mind, researchers at Kyushu University in Japan recently created a near-future perception system named Previewed Reality that allows human users to forecast future changes in their environment, which could then inform their decisions and guide their actions. This system compiles a data-set containing information about the position of objects, humans and robots within the same environment, to then produce simulations (模拟) of events that could take place in the near future. These simulations are presented to human users via Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) headsets.

To collect information about the position of different objects, robots, and humans in a shared environment, the researchers used a number of strategically placed sensors, including optical trackers that monitored the movements of objects or robots, and a RGB-D camera which mainly tracked human actions. The data gathered by the sensors was then fed to a motion planner and a dynamics simulator. Combining these two system components allowed the researchers to forecast changes in a given environment and synthesize (合成) images of events that are likely to occur in the near future, from the viewpoint of a specific human. Human users could then view these synthesized images simply through a VR headset or an AR display.

“This system provides human-friendly communication between a human and a robotic system.” the researchers explained. In their next studies, they plan to expand and simplify the perception system, for instance by creating a lighter and more affordable version that can be accessed on smart phones or other portable devices.

【1】Why did the researchers develop the system?

A.To predict future changes in human behavior.

B.To record developments in the field of robotics.

C.To enhance safety of human-robot interactions.

D.To make good use of virtual reality technology.

【2】What is special about Previewed Reality?

A.It simulates near-future events via VR headsets.

B.It enables human users to perceive future events.

C.It guides robots to track humans’ movements easily.

D.It helps determine the location information of objects.

【3】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A.Functions of various sensors.

    B.New ways to synthesize images.

    C.The structure of Previewed Reality.

D.The working process of Previewed Reality.

【4】What might the researchers do in the future?

A.Promote the new version through advertising.

B.Test this perception system with smart phones.

C.Apply some new techniques to robotic systems.

D.Make the system accessible on portable devices.

  • 24、Pandas are not only a national treasure, but are loved around the world.

Recently, a giant panda cub born in August at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, US, was given the name Xiao Qi Ji, which is translated into English as “little miracle”. The choice was the result of a five-day online vote that drew nearly 135,000 voters in the US. Interestingly, National Public Radio said that in a nod to Chinese tradition, the name was not chosen until 100 days after the birth.

This cub’s birth proved to be quite inspiring - and at a time when inspiration was truly needed.

“Xiao Qi Ji’s birth is a true miracle that has been so uplifting to all of us during the pandemic (疫情),” Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said in a video congratulatory message. “ We are connected again in the growth of our little ambassador, and in our shared joy and friendship.”

The furry black-and-white animals have played an important role in the country’s diplomacy, known as “ panda diplomacy (外交)”.

According to the Japanese Royal Annual, the practice dates back to the Tang Dynasty, when Empress Wu Zetian sent a pair of pandas to the Japanese emperor.

China revived panda diplomacy in the 1950s when China sent two pandas to the Moscow Zoo. By 1982, China had given 23 pandas to nine different countries. However, most of them have died. China stopped giving away pandas in the early 1980s. Instead, the animals are loaned to other countries. In general, they are to be returned to China after 10 years.

But why do these cute “diplomats” find it hard to survive in other countries? According to Xinhua, their dietary habit is one significant reason. Their nutrition mostly comes from bamboo shoots. Adult giant pandas consume about 40 kilograms of bamboo daily. Pandas can also be quite picky. They refuse to eat bamboo shoots after they have blossomed.

It takes 10 years for a new crop of bamboo to mature, and many countries do not have an environment suitable for bamboo growth. This means that food has to be imported In August, Calgary Zoo in Canada announced that due to pandemic-related changes in its import laws and quarantine methods, they couldn’t provide enough fresh bamboo for pandas. This meant that they had to send two giant pandas back to China.

But countries are still trying their best to facilitate this special type of diplomacy. “We don’t own the pandas, but the whole world wants to help save the panda, and we do that through our knowledge exchange.” Steven Monfort, director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, told China Daily.

【1】The expression “in a nod to” in Para. 2 is closest in meaning to________.

    A.in praise for

    B.in response to

    C.in favor of

    D.in order to observe

【2】Why China decided that pandas are only loaned to other countries?

A.Because the pandas’ dietary habit was significantly changed abroad.

B.Because the pandas couldn’t have bamboo to eat in other countries.

C.Because most of pandas could not be adapted to the climate abroad.

D.Because most of the pandas sent to other countries couldn’t survive.

【3】What can we learn from the text?

A.It was the first time that China had sent a panda to Japan.

B.The practice “panda diplomacy” dales from the Tang Dynasty.

C.China began panda diplomacy, sending two pandas to Moscow Zoo.

D.Two giant pandas had to be returned because they were sick in Canada.

【4】What Steven Monfort’s attitude towards the special type of diplomacy?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Uncaring.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Doubtful.

【5】What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To tell us how to feed pandas properly.

B.To call on people to love pandas in the world.

C.To introduce the furry black and white ambassador.

D.To explain why “panda diplomacy” is stopped.
