二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), perhaps the most famous artist in the world, is perceived by many as the “mad” artist. His artistic genius is often overshadowed by those who see his paintings as only visual expressions of his troubled mind. While in part this may be true, in reality his innovative and unique artistic style was of enormous importance to a host of artists who followed in his wake. Even when openly influenced by his predecessors or contemporaries (前辈或同辈), his art remained identifiably his own, developing a distinctive style that failed to be accepted by the art-buying public in his own time. The career of Vincent van Gogh as a painter was short, but his extraordinary boldness of his technique created masterpieces that exercise a profound influence on the art of the twentieth century.

Although the artist’s first formal job after leaving school was art-related, he did not actually begin painting until years later. At 16, Vincent van Gogh entered an apprenticeship (学徒身份) at his uncle’s branch of Goupil & Cie, a Paris-based art dealership. The position involved travel and certainly exposure to the contemporary art of his day, but van Gogh would move on to religious work and a bookseller before producing the first Van Gogh painting.

His earliest works, completed from 1881 through 1883, reflect a new-comer’s attention to detail as well as hints of the new genius that would fully emerge in his later paintings. Although his sketches and watercolor drawings may, at first glance, seem two-dimensional and amateurish, they are fascinating in terms of their testament to the van Gogh’s early studies in Realism.

Vincent van Gogh produced his first drawings while staying at his parents’ home in Etten, the Netherlands, schooled chiefly by books on artistic technique. The artist restricted his first drawings to a black and white palette (调色板), believing mastery of this discipline to be essential before attempting works in color.

【1】Why do many people think of van Gogh as a mad artist according to paragraph 1?

A.Because his artistic style failed to be accepted by the public.

B.Because his art was openly influenced by others and lacked his own style.

C.Because his paintings proved to be untrue from the perspective of reality.

D.Because his painting were often seen as confusing expressions of his mind.

【2】What does paragraph 2 mainly want to tell us?

A.Vincent van Gogh was rarely exposed to art before producing paintings.

B.Vincent van Gogh lived a miserable life before becoming a painter.

C.Vincent van Gogh experienced many different jobs before painting.

D.Vincent van Gogh was also successful in many other fields besides art.

【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs of the text?

A.Vincent van Gogh had difficulty in distinguishing different colors.

B.Vincent van Gogh had great abilities in teaching and training himself.

C.People thought highly of Vincent van Gogh’s earliest works at first sight.

D.Vincent van Gogh preferred staying at home to going to school while drawing.

【4】What is probably the author’s attitude towards Vincent van Gogh?

    A.Appreciative.

    B.Suspicious.

    C.Objective.

    D.Confused.

  • 22、As both a parent and a college professor, I have witnessed the destructive effects of test anxiety. Students with it can say quickly the material and explain complex content in a relaxed environment but fail in an exam. When it matters the most, students with test anxiety can convey the least.

Some students turn to drugs. With any medicine, there is a concern for safety, particularly when it is with the brain, the body’s most complicated and important organ. A new study suggests there may be a choice to these drugs for students: an open-label placebo (安慰剂).

Placebos have long been known to effectively reduce symptoms for different illnesses. Traditionally, service of a placebo treatment requires some tricks, in that people believe they are receiving an active, effective treatment, but in reality, they are taking a sugar pill or an activity that has no medical help. An open-label placebo is different: people are told from the start that they are receiving a placebo that contains no medication. And yet Schaefer’s findings indicate that people may still benefit from it.

Why did the placebo work? At this point, scientists are not entirely sure. Human mental processes can be changed by environment. Taking the pills each day may have encouraged participants to think about test anxiety and may have also provided a sense that they were doing something to deal with it.

Finally, although participants taking the placebos did show improvement on a number of self-report measures, they had no benefit over the control group with respect to scores on their final exams. They may have felt better about taking their exams, but those feelings did not change into improved test scores.

Despite these limits, the present findings are appealing and suggest a low-cost, low-risk way for reducing an all-too common problem among students.

【1】What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

A.Test anxiety prevents some students perform normally in exams.

B.Test anxiety can improve some students’ performance after exams.

C.A relaxed atmosphere helps students bring out their best in exams.

D.Some students’ performance in exams is connected with environment.

【2】Why do people feel placebos effective?

A.Because people feel it necessary psychologically.

B.Because people’s psychological feelings are at work.

C.Because placebos are made from sugar and taste sweet.

D.Because placebos are an open choice for the people taking it.

【3】What can be concluded from the fourth and fifth paragraphs?

A.Taking placebos can reduce test anxiety.

B.Taking placebos can improve test scores.

C.Taking placebos is not as effective as taking drugs.

D.Taking placebos can increase sense of achievement.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

A.Drug, a public concern for brain safety.

B.Test anxiety, a destructive factor in exams.

C.Open-label placebo, a free choice for students.

D.Placebo, a likely way to deal with test anxiety.

  • 23、   Bees are unimaginably territorial (有地盘意识的), fighting to death to defend their home with painful stings (螫刺). But killer bees are particularly fierce. They appeared after African bees were imported to Brazil in the 1950s. By the 1980s, they had spread north to the United States, outgunning native bees along the way. Their massive attacks have killed more than 1,000 people.

Mario Palma, a biochemist at Sao Paulo State University in Rio Claro, Brazil, who studies social behavior in bees, wanted to understand the basis of this aggression. So he and his colleagues swung a black leather ball in front of some killer bees and collected the bees whose stingers got stuck in the ball during the attack. They also collected killer bees that remained in the cell. The analysis suggested that killer bee brains have two proteins that—in the aggressive bees—quickly break into pieces to form a so-called “neuropeptide (神经肽)”, they reported this week in the Journal of Proteome Research.

Palma and his colleagues already knew that bee brains have these two proteins. “We were astonished when we identified some very simple neuropeptides, which were produced in a few seconds,” Palma said. Killer bees that remained in the cell did not make these neuropeptides, he reported. And when his team put these neuropeptides into young, less aggressive bees, they “became aggressive like older individuals”.

Palma added that these neuropeptides also increase the production of  energy  and alarm chemicals. They could also encourage the nerve cells in killer bees needed to make the stinging attack. “There is a fine biochemical regulation in the killer bee brain,” he said. Researchers have found these neuropeptides in other insects, but few had associated them with “fight” behavior.

    1What is special about bees?

    A. They are particularly fierce. B. They show territorial behavior.

    C. They were imported to Brazil. D. They live in harmony with other insects.

2Why did Palma and his colleagues perform the experiment?

    A. To understand bees’ social behavior.

    B. To study why killer bees are aggressive.

    C. To prove bees love flying around.

    D. To learn how bees communicate with each other.

3What finding surprised the researchers during the experiment?

    A. There are two proteins in killer bee brains.

    B. Young killer bees are fiercer than older ones.

    C. The killer bees make an attack immediately.

    D. Killer bee brains produce neuropeptide quickly.

4What will the author probably talk about following the last paragraph?

    A. The form of these neuropeptides in killer bees.

    B. The function of these neuropeptides in other insects.

    C. The application of these scientific methods in other insects.

    D. The production of energy and alarm chemicals in killer bees.

  • 24、   We’re loving the sea to death. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine about living under the sea. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail, because we’ve not been thinking about design of structures with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night contuse species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.

Johnson, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” — the marine version of the “green engineering” movement on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.

Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbors around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life.

It’s a far cry from the days when huge numbers of old tyres were thrown into the sea to build “artificial reefs”. Those early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.

1What do we know about “hard engineering”?

A.It has improved sea environment. B.It controls the influence of sea well.

C.It has failed to achieve its purpose. D.It makes living under the sea possible.

2What does the underlined word “contuse” in Paragraph 1 mean

    A.Injure. B.Heat. C.Defend. D.Involve.

3Which of the following is a form of “blue engineering”?

A.Growing plant life on concrete buildings. B.Building rocky shores with 3D printers.

C.Creating an artificial reef with old tyres. D.Building structures benefiting sea creatures.

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Two ways of sea engineering. B.The green engineering movement.

C.Construction of artificial reefs. D.Research on blue engineering.
