二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Given a wide range of available entertainment options and the way we consume information, visits to the library may seem like an old-fashioned entertainment. But according to a new Gallup poll (民意调査),Americans took more trips to the library than to the movie theater in 2019. The poll surveyed 1,025 adults throughout the United States who were asked how many times they participated in nine different leisure (休闲)activities, including visiting a library, watching a movie, or attending a sporting event. Library visits came out on top as the favorite, with those surveyed visiting an average of 10.5 times annually. Movies were second with respondents heading to the cinema an average of 5.3 times throughout the year. The zoo came in the last place with only 0.9 visits.

Although it’s not the only determining factor, cost appears to play a part. Activities at the bottom of the list such as theme parks and zoos are typically expensive. Libraries are free, as are many of their available services like Wi-Fi, in addition to the endless amounts of books. A Pew Research Center study indicated that although most people visit libraries to check out reading materials, 29% of surveyed Americans over the age of 16 use libraries for computers, Internet and public Wi-Fi.

People between ages 30-49 were most likely to engage in leisure activities, according to the Gallup poll. This was perhaps because of “their relative youth combined with mid-life stability” Gallup’s Justin McCarthy told Smithsonian. McCarthy also notes that libraries are typically visited most often by adults from low-income households and less often by adults from high-income households. In this poll, the youngest age group—those who are 18 to 29 years old—visited the library the most. This could be because college students are in that group.

Regardless of the reasons why people visit libraries, they’re far from outdated. Libraries have stood the test of time, which is good news for book lovers, those needing to drop in for Internet use, or anyone just looking for some quiet time. If there was ever any doubt that libraries would simply fade away, research suggests that they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

1Which activity ranks last according to the survey?

    A.Going to a library.

    B.Visiting the zoo.

    C.Attending a sporting event.

D.Watching a movie in the theater.

2What can be inferred from paragraph 2?

A.Age plays a key role in going to a library.

B.Teenagers go to libraries mainly for free Wi-Fi.

C.Theme parks and zoos are less favored among the young.

D.The majority of Americans visit libraries mainly for reading materials.

3Who visit libraries most according to McCarthy?

    A.Adults with high income.

    B.People between ages 30-49.

C.The young at the age of 18 to 29.

    D.Teenagers from low-income households.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.Why people love reading more than ever

B.We love movies, but we love libraries more

C.Reading in libraries makes you a better person

D.Why more young people go to libraries for free Wi-Fi

  • 22、   A new study researched how bad technology affected employees' mental health. The research involved experiments in which brainwaves were measured as people were put through a series of bad technology experiences. The experiments involved adults of many ages with different levels of computer skills. Subjects were tested with simple computer problems, like troubled sign-in operations. Others dealt with slow-speed connections to the Internet. Still others experienced system crashes.

“The moment people started using bad technology, we saw a doubling of their levels of stress,” said Olivier Oullier, president of EMOTIV, which is a technology company. “I was a bit surprised by that, because you rarely see those levels going so high,” he said. The experiments showed that technology related stress had a lasting effect, he added.

In addition to tech failures affecting the mental health of employees, the problems can also affect a company's business, the research found. Such problems can reduce productivity, especially that of younger workers, who rely heavily on technology to work. The research showed a thirty percent production drop among study subjects under age 40. And lower productivity in turn increased their stress levels.

As stressful as the tech problems were for those in the study, Oullier said, such effects were likely to be even more severe in the real world. He said the subjects knew they were involved in an experiment so they may not have been as personally affected by the results.

As Oullier has pointed out, another issue is that many employees are working remotely and this can also add to tech difficulties. In an office, computer support helpers are usually available to help workers solve tech problems. But working from a kitchen or home office, employees are often on their own. When they face more tech problems, they get more stressed.

“When you're stuck at home and all you have is a computer provided by your employer, you might not have access to tech support,” Oullier said. “That's why it's so important when you re remote to have technology that works.”

【1】What did researchers do to all subjects in the experiment?

A.They got them exposed to tech failures.

B.They asked them to gain computer skills.

C.They required them to calm others down.

D.They tested them with complex problems.

【2】Why are young employees affected more severely by tech failures?

A.They have a preference for work from home offices.

B.They have heavier dependence on technology at work.

C.They play an important role in a company's tech business.

D.They are not as skilled and experienced as old employees.

【3】Which of the following statements does Olivier Oullier agree to?

A.Remote work leads to lower productivity.

B.Tech- related stress has a temporary effect.

C.Lack of tech support adds to stress levels.

D.Access to technology ensures good health.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Bad Technology Has Little to Do With Productivity.

B.Tech Failures Can Make Employees More Stressed.

C.Working Remotely Can Lead to Poor Mental Health.

D.Computer Skills Are Particularly Necessary at Work.

  • 23、   Skyscrapers are the symbol of Urban life.City people are used to seeing tall buildings and apartments. Farmson the other hand, are associated with rural(农村的)life.Howeverthere are experts who think skyscrapers should become farms to meet the increasing food needs.

By the middle of this century, some scientists suggestalmost 80% of the earth's population could live in cities. In additionthe population could increase to 9.1 billion people during that time yet the amount of  land available for farming will be the same.If current farming practices don't changewe will need an area of new land to produce enough food for the planet.

Vertical farms, where urban farmers could grow crops in environmentally friendly skyscrapers, could be the solution. In spite of concerns over high costs, experts want to make it a reality and use these skyscrapers to grow crops.

Vertical farms would have many advantages, supporters say. Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming could be free of chemicals and diseases. Besides, crops would not suffer from problems like flooding. Finallyvertical farms would reduce the cost and negative effects of transporting food over long distances.

Some argue that although crops growing in a tall glass building would get natural sunlight during the dayit wouldn't be enough. For this reasonvertical farms would need additional light sources(来源), such as artificial light.

Another way of growing fresh food is to build urban farms on rooftops. This more practical approach may be more achievable than the idea of farms in skyscrapers, researchers suggest. Experts agree that innovative(革新的)farming practices are needed to support the need for more food at affordable costs, both to the farmer and to the consumer, but the best ideas could be yet to come.

1What primary problem could vertical farming settle

    A. Poor state of rural life.

    B. Shortage of food supply.

    C. High cost for transporting crops.

    D. Environmental pollution by transitional farmings

2What is the advantage of vertical farming?

    A. It can produce organic food.

    B. It requires little care.

    C. It can benefit transport industry.

    D. It needs very low cost.

3What is a big challenge to make vertical farming a reality?

    A. Farmable land. B. Crop diseases

    C. Light sources. D. Climate conditions.

4What can be the best title of the test?

    A. Future Food Needs

    B. Symbol of Urban Life

    C. Farming on Rooftops

    D. Farms of the Future

  • 24、The poaching(偷猎), or illegal killing, of rhinos(犀牛) in South Africa is growing worse each year. The government recently reported that a record number of rhinos were poached in 2015,a year which had more rhino killings in South Africa than ever before.

The World Wildlife Fund,or WWF,says about 20, 000 rhinos live in South Africa. That is more than 80 percent of the rhinos in the world.Edna Molewa,South Africa’s Environment Minister, says, “During 2015,we are sad to say this,1,215 rhinos were killed. This is a rise in the number of poached rhinos from 1,004 in 2014 and indeed very worrying.”

The animals are hunted for their horns(角).Many people in Asia believe the horn has curing power, which drives poachers, at all costs, mad for more horns. But there is no scientific evidence for this belief. The horn is made of keratin(角蛋白).That is the same thing as human hair, fingernails and toenails.

Ms.Molewa said 386 suspected poachers were arrested last year,an increase from the year before. But rhino protection workers say poachers often go unpunished after arrest. South Africa’s legal system is ineffective. Ms. Mo1ewa said more needs to be done and South Africa is taking strong measures to protect rhinos. The efforts include moving some of the animals to secret places in neighboring countries. “Now approximately 100 rhinos have been moved to neighboring states in the SADC region during 2015 and 200 more rhinos will be moved this year,” Molewa said.

Jo Shaw, the rhino program manager at the WWF,said, “We’re talking about a loss of a hundred rhinos a month,or more than three a day.We really need to see effective action not just at a national level but internationally.” She says officials should find the criminal groups responsible for the poaching and punish them. Government officials are to meet in Botswana in March at the Inter-governmental Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade.

    【1】According to paragraph 2, we know ________.

A.half of rhinos live in South Africa

B.less than 1,000 rhinos were killed in 2014

C.the killing in 2015 was more than that in 2014

D.there are only 20,000 rhinos left in the world

【2】What is the main reason for people to hunt rhinos?

    A.To get more keratin.

    B.To protect the farmland.

    C.To use them for decoration.

    D.To make money from horns.

    【3】Jo Shaw thinks that ________.

A.many criminal groups are well organized

B.new laws are needed to punish the killers

    C.rhino protection needs international cooperation

D.conferences about protecting rhinos are to be held every year

【4】What can we infer from the text?

A.Rhino protection has a long way to go.

B.No one would like to buy horns in the future.

C.The illegal killing of rhinos will soon disappear.

D.Rhinos living in South Africa will move to other countries.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On the first day of school, Victor was handed a packet of papers and a computer card on which he listed his one elective (选修课程), French.

Besides, Teresa, a girl he had liked was taking French, too. With any luck they would be in the same class. She was cute. Victor was greatly influenced by her conscientious and scholarly actions.

Victor sat calmly, thinking of Teresa, who sat two rows away, reading a paperback novel. The bell rang, and the students headed noisily through the door. Only Teresa lingered (逗留磨蹭), talking with the teacher. Victor lingered, keeping his head down and staring at his desk. He wanted to leave when she did so he could bump into her and say something clever. He watched her on the sly (偷偷地). As she turned to leave, he stood up and hurried to the door, where he managed to catch her eye.

Her next class was French, same as Victor’s.

Mr. Bueller asked if anyone knew French. Victor raised his hand, wanting to impress Teresa. The teacher beamed and said, “Très bien. Parlez-vous français?” (French for “Very well. Do you speak French?”)

Victor didn’t know what to say. The teacher wet his lips and asked something else in French. The room grew silent. Victor felt all eyes staring at him. He tried to bluff his way out (蒙混过关) by making noises that sounded French.

“La me vave me con le grandma,” he said uncertainly.

Mr. Bueller asked him to speak up.

A river of nervous sweat ran down his palms. He felt awful. Without looking at Mr. Bueller, Victor mumbled, ‘Frenchie oh wewe gee in September.”

Mr. Bueller asked Victor to repeat what he said.

“Frenchie oh wewe gee in September," Victor repeated.

Then Mr. Bueller understood that the boy didn’t know French, but he chose not to humiliate (使…丢脸) Victor. Mr. Bueller smiled and nodded at him to sit down.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为80左右;
