21、Americans have been calling on police to change how they deal with citizens in crises (危机), especially those with mental health problems.
Police are usually the first to arrive at a serious incident and are trained to deal with crime and violent behavior. But a law enforcement (执行) agency in the central state of Illinois has found a new way to handle mental health cases. It is using video calls to calm difficult situations.
Restrictions ordered to stop the spread of the new coronavirus have left many people alone in their homes without support. Many people are unable to find mental health services or unwilling to go out and risk being infected with COVID-19.
The Cook County sheriff’s (警长) office led by Sheriff Tom Dart has faced many emergency calls about mental health crises recently. Such calls have increased by 60 percent this year. Dart said police officers are being asked more and more to arrive first to mental health cases. He said officers are being asked to do things they are not trained for or for which they have little training.
Dart said some programs have mental health professionals riding in a vehicle with law enforcement officers. That works for smaller communities. But Cook County, which includes the city of Chicago, is very big.
“We wanted a tool for the officers to get that mental health expert on the scene immediately,” said Elli Petaque-Montgomery, a team director.
So far, the department has 70 personal electronic devices (设备). They are used to make video calls. The department bought 35 with aid money when the program began. It bought 35 more when it became clear the number of calls, which is now past 50, would increase.
Sometimes a lack of wireless service or another reason has not permitted a video call. The department said this has happened 20 times. In those cases, officers set up a telephone call between the person in crisis and a mental health professional.
Four mental health experts have been joined by four more to answer calls. Dart said the cost of the experts and the devices is much less than what it would cost to send out many mental health professionals with police.

23、 Toni Morrison, an American writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature, was admired as the country's greatest living writer and died at age 88. Her novels, Beloved, Song of Solomon, and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed with skin color.
She published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970.Eighteen years later, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to be born into slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as “language itself, a language she wants to liberate from race.” Her novels discussed America’s past, focusing on black history and the effects of racism on individuals.
She was born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, in 1931.Her father worked in a steel factory, and her mother was a maid. She attended Howard University, an all-black university in Washington, D.C. At Howard, she read African, British and American literature, including writers William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. “The writers who affect me the most were novelists who were writing in Africa: Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart was a major education for me, ”she told the Associated Press in 1998.
After a short marriage, she became a single mother of two sons and worked as a book editor in New York. Several publishers rejected her first book, The Bluest Eye, but it impressed The New York Times’ book critic John Leonard who believed Morrison was an important new voice. He said her writing was “so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry.”
Morrison enjoyed her literary fame and was proud of her Nobel Prize. “Nobody was going to take that and make it into something else. I felt representational. I felt American. I felt Ohioan. I felt blacker than ever. I felt more woman than ever. I felt all of that and put all of that together and went out and had a good time, ”she said.

24、For most people, the thought of having to watch themselves work out is not an attractive one. Yet as any gym-goer knows, there are always some people who like to enjoy their reflection in the floor-length mirrors. It is perhaps these particular keep-fit lovers who are most excited about the latest trend in home exercise-smart fitness mirrors.
These are 180cm or so tall, high-tech mirrors that have a computer which is connected to the Internet, and also work as a video screen. The idea is that people contact an online trainer, who then appears in the mirror along with their reflection.
On the more advanced devices the mirror is equipped with cameras, speakers and numerous sensors connected to AI, so the trainer can watch people’s movements, and provide improvements and changes. On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way — people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around. Lessons are typically not live; instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos.
But is there any actual advantage in being able to watch yourself work out? Colleen Logan, the US owner of both Nordic Track and ProForm, says, “Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries”.
However, Dr Anthony Papathomas, a sports and fitness psychologist says there is value to this argument, but that he also has some concerns. He said, “How people who are not confident about their body image feel about the mirror gets me in a fret. It may be a problem for those new to exercise and looking to make a lifestyle change. Even for regular exercisers, there are many who experience body dysmorphia (变形) or eating disorders, and for them, seeing a reflection throughout their exercise might be troubling.”
【1】What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about smart fitness mirrors?
A.Their target users.
B.Their basic functions.
C.Their wide popularity.
D.Their complex structure.
【2】What can be the benefit for exercisers from simpler fitness mirrors?
A.Having live workout lessons.
B.Exercising with other partners.
C.Learning from some trainers at once.
D.Taking advantage of workout videos.
【3】What does Logan think of the mirror?
A.It makes mistakes sometimes.
B.It could bring injuries to its users.
C.It helps users exercise more properly.
D.It can’t be used for strength exercises.
【4】Which of the following best explains “in a fret” underlined in the last paragraph?
A.Worried.
B.Confused.
C.Annoyed.
D.Interested.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was born into a big family. As the fifth of seven children, I went to the same public school as my three older sisters and brother. Every year, my mother went to the same scene and had parent/child interviews with the same teachers. The only thing different was the child. And every child participated in an old school tradition — the annual plant sale held in early May, just in time for Mother’s Day.
Third grade was the first time that I was allowed to take part in the plant sale. I wanted to surprise my mother, but I didn’t have any money. I went to my oldest sister and shared the secret, and she gave me some money. When I arrived at the plant sale, I carefully made my selection and spent a long time inspecting each plant to ensure that I had indeed found the best geranium (天竺葵). Once I had taken it secretly home, with the help of my sister, I hid it in the attic (阁楼). I was very nervous for fear that my mother would find it before Mother’s Day, but my sister assured me that she wouldn’t, and indeed she did not.
When Mother’s Day arrived, I got up very early, went into the attic on tiptoe and carried the carefully-selected geranium to the kitchen, where my mother was preparing breakfast. “It’s for you!” I gave the flower to mum and hugged her tightly.
The year I was fifteen, my younger sister reached third grade. In early May she came to me full of wonder and secrecy and told me that there was going to be a plant sale at school, and she wanted to surprise our mother. As my older sister did for me, I gave her some money and off she went.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
