21、 Vancouver has had a crazy property(房地产)market since it hosted the winter Olympics in 2010.The downtown area is forested with new apartment blocks. Prices have risen by nearly 60% in the past three years. But until recently developers have largely avoided Chinatown. It is an underdeveloped area. Many Chinatown residents(居民)are old and poor.
Developers now have Chinatown in their sights. Two years ago one built a 17-storey apartment building on its edge. This alarmed many residents, who had formed a group to stop the high-rise advance, now called #SaveChinatownYVR. Ms Melody Ma is its leader. Recently it has been successful.
The main theatre of battle is a car park known as 105 Keefer, where Beedie Living plans to build a nine-storey brick-and-glass apartment block. The developer promises 111 luxury flats, with rooftop landscaping and shops below.
105 Keefer is in an area rich with cultural associations. Just to the south is a monument to Chinese-Canadian builders of the Canadian Pacific Railway and veterans of the Second World War. Across the street is the Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden and the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum. "A lot of people were frightened" because of the building's "closeness to sacred sites in the heart of Chinatown", says Ms Ma. Some residents also fear that it will push up rents.
Conservationists hope that the parking lot is where they can stop development, which they say has spoil the charm of other Vancouver neighbourhoods such as Mount Pleasant. The dispute(分歧)is part of a debate about the city's identity, says Andy Yan,an urban planner. Vancouverites, he says, are asking themselves,"Who are we?And what are we building for?"The people who might want to buy the flats that do not yet exist are,of course, not being consulted.

22、I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way.
Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he should concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up. Could he be more intent while standing up?
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.
Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits, and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

23、 John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas City in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.
Fortunately he had a strong-willed, caring mother. John remembers that his mother told him many times, “Son, you can be anything you really want to be if you just believe.” She told him not to be dependent on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success,” said she. “All the people who work hard don’t succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”
These words came from a woman less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don’t mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son — then 15 — to Chicago.
Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for, John’s mother and stepfather could not find work. But there John could go to school, and there he learned the power of words — as editor of the newspaper and yearbook of Du Stable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.
While others discouraged him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by: “Nothing beats a failure but a try.” She also let him pawn (典当) her furniture to get the $500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.
It is natural the difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind. “Son, failure is not in your vocabulary.”
Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America — worth $150 million.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mary’s husband died a few years ago from an accident. To make ends meet, she had to take on several jobs and bring up her five children alone. Fortunately, her oldest children understood her and helped to look after the younger kids. Mary always felt terrible about that, but there was nothing she could do. She dreamed of having a van to transport goods for others so that she could have another source of income.
In the mornings, Mary cleaned the houses for some families, and worked as a cashier at a supermarket the rest of the afternoon. At night, she worked at a gas station’s convenience store. Every night, she came home tired, and most of the kids had been asleep by then.
One afternoon, Mary was walking to the supermarket to start her duty when she saw an old man staring at the window of the bakery next door. The smell of fresh-baked bread permeated (弥漫) the air. However, the man merely sighed and started walking away.
Mary felt awful for some unknown reason and stopped the man. “Hey, sir. I think I’ve seen you before at the store, ”she said. “Yes. I’m Hector. Nice to see you,” the old man nodded at her and started to walk away.
“Wait, do you need anything?” Mary said, smiling kindly.
“Honestly, there was a leak in my roof this month, and I had to spend my entire month’s pension (退休金) on it. I don’t have much money for desserts,” he said. “I don’t know when I’ll be able to buy some again.”
