二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Whether it be a person, an animal, or even an insect, a mother's instincts (本能)are never wrong. This idea rings true for a mother cat who acted fast and sought out help when her kittens were in trouble. This mother cat's quick thinking may have just saved her babies.

In the urban district of Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked into a regular hospital holding a kitten in her mouth. As the mother cat moved through the hospital, people were surprised to see such a sight, but let her pass. The mother cat asked for help, crying for a   long time. She was familiar to the hospital staff, who had been leaving her food and water outside, but they were unaware that she had given birth to kittens.

The mother cat was concerned for her young because they weren't able to open their eyes. After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections. One of the doctors recalls, “We consulted with vets (兽医)and gave medicine as described. When the kittens opened their eyes a short time later, we were excited." Later, they were sent to an animal hospital for further care. The cats are now up for adoption and will hopefully find loving forever homes.

When it comes to mother cats and kittens, kittens completely depend on mothers for the first few months of their lives. Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any threat or danger. Without the mother cat's help, the kittens may not make it to adulthood.

As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother's love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mom is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy.

【1】Why did the mother cat show up in the hospital?

    A.To seek out food.

    B.To express thanks.

    C.To get her babies treated.

D.To give birth to her babies.

【2】How did the doctors help the baby cat?

    A.They built them a home.

    B.They adopted all of them.

    C.They gave them right medicine.

    D.They operated on them immediately.

【3】What makes newly-born cats dependent on their mothers?

    A.Their physical state.

    B.Their eating habit.

    C.Their appearance.

    D.Their behavior.

【4】What can we learn from the story?

    A.A cat has nine lives.

    B.Love makes a difference.

    C.One good turn deserves another.

D.God helps those who help themselves.

  • 22、If you’ve ever learned a new language, you know how difficult it can be. Native languages seem almost built in. But learning a new language, especially after early childhood, can be a huge task, burdened by long vocabulary lists to memorize and troublesome rules to master. Nevertheless, it’s worth the effort.

John Grundy, a scientist at Iowa State University who specializes in languages and the brain, explains that learning a new language causes extensive neuroplasticity (神经塑性) in the brain. In other words, when you learn a new language, your brain gets rearranged, new connections are made and new pathways are formed. “It’s really just a remodeling of the brain that allows it to become more efficient,” Grundy says.

These changes don’t help with just language functions. Chung-Fat-Yim, a post-doctoral researcher at Northwestern University, says they affect the whole executive processing part of the brain, what she calls the CEO of the brain. Bilinguals (双语者) use that area for language control, but also for other purposes such as the ability to plan for future behaviors, monitor and change behavior as needed, and switch between tasks. Being bilingual might also make you a nicer person. The bilingual person has to have an awareness that different people can hold different mental states about the same event. So they are more likely to develop greater empathy (共情).

Having a second language can even help to prevent or at least delay intelligence decline. There is a consistent finding that bilinguals are able to put off symptoms of mental disorders for about four to six years compared to those speaking one language.

If you’re thinking it’s too late, you’re probably wrong. It’s true that young children do more quickly learn whatever language they’re exposed to. But when it comes to adding on a new one, adults aren’t as at much of a disadvantage as you might think. If you practice a lot and bury yourself in the language, you can see the benefits at any age, especially when you get older.

【1】What does John Grundy think of picking up a new language?

A.It reshapes the brain and improves its efficiency.

B.It indeed lays a heavy burden on learners.

C.It is enough to memorize vocabulary and grammar.

D.It has a negative effect on learners’ native language.

【2】What do we know about Bilinguals in paragraph 3?

    A.They change their behaviors frequently.

B.They may not concentrate on one thing.

C.They are more likely to understand others.

D.They tend to find faults with others’ work.

【3】What is vital in acquiring a new language for adults?

    A.Age.

    B.Engagement.

    C.Motivation.

    D.Strategy.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

A.How learning a language changes your brain.

B.Picking up a new language is a huge challenge.

C.Using more languages means less diseases.

D.How to master a new language effectively.

  • 23、When Oumou Dieye first started competing against men in the sport of golf, she was not confident and felt a little afraid. The men did not want to golf with her nor did they take her seriously. But then, she won her first game. After that, she had all the confidence she needed to keep playing and defeating male golfers.

Dieye is the only professional female golfer in Senegal. She was introduced to golf by her brother-in-law and immediately fell in love. Not long after she began competing, Dieye was given a chance to train in Morocco. With the financial support from her French golf partners, she spent three months training with the Moroccan Golf Federation. She said she enjoyed the experience so much that she returned to Morocco and stayed for seven years. While there, she also taught children at a golfing school.

Today her home is filled with many golfing awards. She has won so many that she has lost track of the number. What she has done is notable because Senegal is a conservative, Muslim nation. There is much pressure from society for women not to be involved in professional sports. The country practices a more liberal form of Islam (伊斯兰教). However, the culture still has traditional ideas of what women should do. A woman who chooses sports over duties at home risks being rejected by her family. At first, her family was not supportive. But after seeing her love of the sport, they changed their minds.

In 2018, when Dieye returned from Morocco, she was not happy about the state of golf in her home country. She wanted to create a golf school similar to the one in Morocco. In 2020, the Senegalese Golf Federation agreed to help Dieye establish a golf school in preparation for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics in Dakar. It will be Dieye’s job to train Senegal’s first national golf team. This will involve preparing female golfers-including her own daughter.

【1】What was the situation when Dieye first played golf with male players?

A.She was a shy girl short of social skills.

B.Her family didn’t support her golf career.

C.They didn’t think she was a worthy competitor.

D.She was the only female golfer of the country.

【2】What can we learn about the country of Senegal?

A.It has received financial support from France.

B.Women there are encouraged to stay at home.

C.Sports play an important part in people’s life.

D.Golf players are very popular in the country.

【3】Which of the following best describes Dieye?

    A.A pioneer.

    B.An explorer.

    C.A producer.

    D.An investigator.
