二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、They give us paper and fuel, as well as vital ecological services – like cleaning the air, storing carbon and providing habitat. We’re talking about trees, of course. But changes in the environment largely caused by humans appear to be causing great transformations in trees around the world.

In a new study, scientists reviewed global research on trends in tree seedlings, growth and death. They combined those data with an analysis of deforestation (森林砍伐). And they found that worldwide, older trees are dying at a higher rate than in the past due to factors like rising air temperature, wildfires, drought and pathogens (病原体).

“And most of the drivers of this decrease in large, old trees, such as rising temperatures, severe droughts, wildfires, windstorms and deforestation are all – although variable across the globe – generally increasing. And so both the loss has already occurred, but we expect more continued loss of big, old trees,” said Nate McDowell, an earth scientist at Pacific Northwest National Lab, who was one of the study’s authors.

“So if we have an increasing rate of death, particularly of the larger, older trees, what’s left are the younger trees. So that’s why, on average, through the loss of bigger, older trees, our forests are becoming younger and shorter.”

This trend is a problem because old trees are vitally important. “For sure, the increase in death does limit the carbon storage of an ecosystem and can force the system to become a carbon source to the atmosphere. The second reason we care is from a biodiversity perspective: Old trees tend to house a higher biodiversity than young forests do. And the third reason is linked with beauty: As a society, we care about these trees. We have national parks named after these big trees. So there’s a personal reason for people to care about this as well,” McDowell added.

【1】What formed the basis for the new study on trees?

    A.Previous study data on trees.

    B.wildfires, drought and pathogens.

C.Research on changes in the environment.

    D.Information about climate change.

【2】What does “the drivers” in paragraph 3 refer to?

A.The transformations brought by the loss of older trees.

B.The factors causing the death of older trees.

C.The causes of the disappearance of forests.

    D.The environmental impacts of cars.

【3】According to Nate McDowell, old trees are important in that________.

A.they can limit the carbon storage of an ecosystem

B.they play an important role in forming national parks

C.they allow the existence of a higher biodiversity

D.they bring in a much younger forest

【4】What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

A.To prove that forests are becoming less diverse.

B.To call on society to plant more trees.

C.To explain the reasons behind the loss of old trees.

D.To describe the importance of old trees for our world.

  • 22、   Dolphins, African gray parrots and some other animals understand the idea of “zero,” but researchers were surprised to find that honeybees also comprehend this abstract concept, considering the insects’ tiny brains, according to a new study. Honeybees have fewer than one million neurons (神经元), compared with the 86 billion neurons in humans—and yet, they grasp a concept that humans, by some measures, don’t start to understand before preschool.

The researchers set up two cards, each of which had a set of symbols on them, like triangles or circles. Then, they trained a group of the bees to fly to the card with the lower number of symbols. The bees quickly learned what the humans wanted them to do to get their delicious, sweet rewards. The trained bees were then shown a card that was empty and one that had symbols on it. There is no need for the bees to be trained to fly more often to the empty card—thus showing that they understood that “zero” was a number less than the others.

Although they flew more often to an empty card than to one that had one symbol on it, it became easier for them to distinguish when the symbols on the card increased in number. For example, they more often flew to the zero when the other card had four symbols than when it had one.

Perhaps these findings will explain the brain mechanism (机制) behind what allows us to understand the concept of “nothing,” Adrian Dyer, a researcher said. This understanding, in turn, could help in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that also understands this concept. “If bees can understand ‘zero’ with a brain of less than a million neurons, it suggests there are simple, efficient ways to teach AI new tricks,” Dyer said in the statement.

1What is a surprising finding for the researchers?

    A. Many animals also comprehend the meaning of “zero”.

    B. The number of neurons of honeybees is much smaller.

    C. Honeybees can understand “zero” with their tiny brains.

    D. Humans fail to recognize abstract ideas before preschool.

2What can the bees do without further training?

    A. Fly directly to the card with more symbols on it.

    B. Fly less often to the card with fewer symbols on it.

    C. Fly quite slowly to the card without anything on it.

    D. Fly more often to the card without any symbol on it.

3What does Adrian Dyer say about these findings?

    A. They offer inspiration to the development of technology.

    B. They enable people to understand more abstract concepts.

    C. They suggest ways to teach humans some complex tricks.

    D. They allow people to set a new type of brain mechanism.

4What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Honeybees know about the concept of “zero”.

    B. Honeybees can understand much as humans do.

    C. Honeybees will help to improve AI in the future.

    D. Honeybees can be trained to comprehend “zero”.

  • 23、   When you take to the seas on a cruise(游船度假), you usually think you are leaving solid ground behind, but the Celebrity Solstice brings a whole new experience to its passengers. Aboard the 317m-long ship is a half-acre lawn(草坪). The Celebrity Solstice is the first cruise ship ever to house live grass.

Nikolas Asproudas, the ship's environmental officer told New Zealand Neus, It was a crazy idea to start with. For five years now, they have been saying that this lawn is the most walked lawn in the world. It's a symbol of honor, particularly because the lawn on the top deck of the ship has special challenges with growth at sea, including “burns” from the salt water, which must be washed off immediately and clearance checks before the ship can pull in to shore.

The lawn is grown in silica(二氧化硅)sand rather than soil, which not only reduces weight, helping the ship's stability, but also agrees with restrictions and helps control pests that may otherwise stay on the grass.

Asproudas sends the Captain of the ship a weekly report on the status of the lawn. “We know that the Australian and New Zealand, authorities are very strict with the grass, and of course, they have to check before we come if, everything's OK,” said the Captain.

The lawn is a source of pride for Asproudas, so. when there are problems with it, he says, “It brings me some sad feelings, but I need to be strong, because I know that it will recover within one week.” All of the crew’s hard work to maintain the “backyard” is appreciated by its many guests, including some that say the: Celebrity Solstice’s lawn is better than theirs at home. Two recent passengers aboard said, “We’re having a drought at home so…it was brilliant!”

Though the option of walking barefoot through a grassy field on a moving cruise ship seems terrific, there are many other ships that are trying to outdo one another with even more surprising guest options.

【1】What is a special challenge that the lawn faces?

    A.Bad weather.

    B.Salt water.

    C.Rare soil.

    D.Strict restrictions.

【2】What might be talked about if the passage is continued?

    A.Efforts to maintain the lawn.

    B.Other options on the cruise.

C.Guest choices on some other cruises.

D.The crew members of the cruise.

【3】What might be the best title for the passage?

A.The Advantages of a Cruise Ship

B.A Cruise Ship that Has a Backyard

C.The Building of a Special Cruise Ship

D.A Cruise Ship that Protects the Environment

  • 24、   Genealogy, or researching your family tree, is a hobby that can rapidly develop into an obsession. Before you start looking for your own ancestors, read this advice from genealogist Maria McLeod.

The first question to ask yourself is why you want to research your family tree. Genealogy is not about discovering that you are the lost prince or princess of an unknown kingdom. It’s about finding more about yourself. For most people the important question is “Why am I like I am?” You might not look like other members of your immediate family and you want to know where your green eyes or curly hair come from. You may be curious about why you have such a quick temper. You may even be suffering from a medical condition and want to know if something in your genetic makeup has caused it.

Another common motivation for researching your family tree is that you plan to visit the place that your ancestors came from and you secretly hope that you will find some long lost cousins with whom you can share your memories. There can be few more exciting things than meeting a distant cousin who is living on the other side of the globe and finding that she looks just like your younger sister. But you should also bear in mind that they may not necessarily want to have anything to do with you. Sometimes there are skeletons in the cupboard that you and your branch of the family are unaware of, but which are still fresh in the minds of your more distant relatives.

Once you are clear about your motivations, you need to take a moment to think about just how many ancestors you might have and how far back you intend to go. You have, no doubt, thought about your parents’ parents and your parents’ parents’ parents. But go back ten generations and the picture becomes much more complicated. You can work it out for yourself. You may be descended(遗传) from no fewer than 1,024 people through ten generations. This can mean that you spend hours going through official records, either in person at the records office or on the Internet. Are you prepared for such a huge task?

1What might be Maria Mcleod’s first piece of advice be?

A.Be prepared to accept your bad temper.

B.Don’t expect to find lovely relatives.

C.Be prepared to find out your hidden health problems.

D.Don’t expect to find out you are a member of a royal family.

2Why are some relatives unwilling to meet you?

A.You may bring back bad memories.

B.They find it disturbing to entertain you.

C.They suspect you of having wrong motives.

D.You could remind them of their lost loved ones.

3What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Who your great grandparents are.

B.When you can finish your huge task.

C.Why researching a family tree is complex.

D.How many people you are descended from.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Uncovering family secrets: do you dare?

B.The science of genealogy: new developments

C.Expert opinions on researching your family past

D.A step-by-step guide to researching your family tree
