21、 Does reading depressing information online get you down? Put the phone away for an hour. Or, better yet, make it 24 hours--you might just get $2, 400 out of it.
RVW, a company that tests home services and products, is holding a 24-hour digital detox (脱瘾) challenge. They’ll pay their chosen challengers, who are “definitely into tech”, over $2000 to survive a whole day without screens.
The challenge is not as easy as it sounds. Those selected for the challenge will not only have to swear off their phones for the day, but television, gaming, computers, smart watches and smart home devices are also off-limits. However, the company clarifies, microwaves are still okay.
The challengers will receive safes to store their electronics in for the 24 hours, along with a $200 supermarket gift card to purchase a tech-free “survival kit,” the company wrote. Some survival kit suggestions from the company include a typewriter to replace computers, writing paper to replace texts, and paints and brushes to replace the fine art of the selfie. Challengers will have to review the survival kit and give feedback (反馈) on the experience after completing the challenge.
Screen time is a growing health risk. The company's challenge comes at a time when “screen time” has taken on new meaning. Nowadays, many people are forced to work remotely and students to study online, making screens more of a necessity than ever before. According to a 2019 report, US teens were spending an average of more than seven hours per day on screen media for entertainment alone. “We have a feeling someone out there needs a break,” the company wrote.
To apply, the company requests a bit of personal information and a 100-word question about why you're right for the challenge. Applications will be open until June 26 and winners will be announced on the company's website on June 29.

22、Mr. Selfridge, the Wisconsin-born retailer (零售商) who left school at 14, rose to become a partner in Marshall Field's. Chicago. Founded in 1852, it was one of the first and most ambitious US department scores. Mr. Selfridge had done well with Marshall Field's. He liked to say, “The customer is always right,” which made the Chicago store popular. And he is believed to have invented the phrase “Only [so many] Shopping Days until Christmas”.
When he visited London on holiday in 1906 he was surprised to find most of the city's department stores were no match of their American and Parisian competitors. This led Selfridge to leave the US and establish Selfridges. a department store named after him. at the west end of London's Oxford Street. In Oxford Street, Selfridge's design team shaped an ambitious classical palacc building with a wall of plate glass windows.
Opened in 1909, Selfridges offered customers a hundred departments along with restaurants, a roof garden, reading and writing rooms, reception areas for foreign visitors, a first aid room and. most importantly, a small army of knowledgeable floor-walking assistants who served as guides as well as being thoroughly instructed in the art of making a sale.
Mr. Selfridge did much to make the department store a destination rather than just a big and comprehensively stocked city shop. It became a place to meet and for ladies to lunch. 23、Researchers may have found a way to keep plants from dying of thirst. They developed a soil additive (添加剂). It will steal water from the air to share with plants.
Their invention is a super-moisture-absorbent gel (SMAG高吸海凝胶). It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases its accumulated water into the root zone of the plants.
Guihua Yu, an engineer at the University of Texas at Austin, led the team that developed the gel. The gel mixed with soil absorbs water and holds it. The next day, rather than allowing it to evaporate (蒸发), the gel instead slowly releases that water into the soil.
The engineers tested the soil additive to grow carrots. During an experiment, they compared carrots grown in sandy soil alone with carrots grown in sandy soil that had been mixed with the get.The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water after about a month. In contrast, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.
Jeff Hattey is a soil scientist. He says similar additives have been used in potting soil for many years. He says the gel works in a similar way. "The big questions for me are first, how much SMAG-soil would you have to use? How long does it last once it's in the soil?"
Yu believes future studies will help his team understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. If it can, the water in the air could allow crops to be grown in dryer cli-males, where irrigation is not practical. It shouldn't hurt the bacteria or worms that are needed to keep soil healthy for growing things. The gel also should pose no risks if it washes into lakes or streams. The research team hopes to confirm that in the near future.

A.By absorbing water from the root zone.
B.By absorbing water from air.
C.By absorbing water from plants.

24、Fashion and Identity
For hundreds of years people have put some message in the type of clothing they wore. Long ago people started wanting to stand out from the “crowd” and be different from other people by means of changing their clothing. Some examples of these “standing out” became very popular and were followed by more people.【1】Nowadays, fashion has become a necessary part of one’s self-realization and clothing is basically a covering designed to be worn on a person’s body. This covering is a “necessity”, which brings a lot of variety into the lives of people and makes their image more complete.
The type of clothing completely depends on the person wearing it and becomes a reflection of personal identity. Lately, a lot is being heard about its meaning in the life of every single person on the planet. The choice of clothing is as important as identification through the color of hair, skin and gender. As every piece of clothing carries a strong message about its owner, every owner “nests” a certain value in it depending on his mindset or today’s mood. Therefore, the clothing of a person is a means of communication with the outside world.【2】
Clothes have a significant impact on the understanding of the people nearby as well as the person wearing them. For instance, a suit can make a person feel more confident and organized, which would eventually change even the gestures of the person. 【3】 Sometimes, fashion may play a vital role in a person’s life, especially when the person is applying for the job he wants. Fashion also creates a message that is required by a situation the person finds himself in. This can be simply proved by analyzing one’s reaction on people wearing different types of clothing.【4】 Thus, even the smallest companies make wearing a suit one of the requirements for their employees.
【5】 Fashion, with all its symbolism and features, form an outstanding base for personal and cultural identification. It is a part of the self-realization that is required for finding a place in life and has become a tool for achieving harmony with the inner world. The more diverse the society around us, the more fashion-trend will appear and surprise us.
A.Fashion helps us realize our dreams.
B.This was the moment when fashion appeared.
C.Fashion and identity are inseparable companions.
D.Clothing was designed to serve people in their daily life.
E.The preference is always given to people dressed in “business style”.
F.It is the way of telling people about the “state” and the “status” of its owner.
G.Wearing jeans after a suit may change the conduct of a person to a very casual one.

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every night as the whole family fell asleep, Catalina would slide from home to the Cerro Tololo observatory (天文台). Papa was the mechanic (修理工)of the observatory, but during the day Papa would not allow her to get closer to the telescopes there. Only at night, Catalina was allowed in with the permission of the night staff.
Catalina loved helping to service the grand telescopes, the eyes that looked out into the universe. She wanted badly to be an astronomer someday. Adults never took her dream seriously. Even her father laughed, “Maybe you’ll be hired to clean the offices. ”
One day in library, Catalina was reading a plant journal when she stopped at the picture of an unusual white flower. “It’s called wild carrot. “ A Spanish astronomer, who she saw several times in the observatory, stood behind her. “Pretty, isn’t it? I’ve always liked that flower, because it looks like a galaxy. ”
“A spiral galaxy (漩涡星系), ”she whispered. Blond eyebrows climbed the scientist's forehead. “Indeed. And what is your name, young lady?” he asked.
”I’m Catalina Solis. ”
“Eduardo Solis’s daughter? The mechanic?”
Yes. ”She
gave a look at him. “I want to be an astronomer when I grow up. "
He laughed kindly, no longer meeting her eyes, and patted her on the shoulder. “Yes, of course, my dear. Work hard in school, and it could happen. ”
One evening, Catalina eyescanned the top of the observatory as usual. Suddenly she noticed the angle of the one-meter telescope was unusual. The telescope was pointed down, lower than she had ever seen it. Catalina learned from1 Papa how dangerous it would be. If left like it was, the telescope would move past its limit and be damaged. So without hesitation she got inside the observatory.
