21、It is believed that human story begins in Africa and ends about 200,000 years later with their seven billion descendants (后代) spread across the Earth, living in peace or at war, their faces lit by campfires and computer screens.
In between is an exciting tale of survival, movement, isolation, and conquest, most of it occurring before recorded history. Who were those first modern people in Africa? What routes did they take when they left their home continent 60,000 years ago to expand into Europe and Asia? When and how did humans reach the Americas? For decades, the only proof was found in a small number of scattered bones and artifacts that our ancestors left behind on their journeys. In the past 20 years, however, DNA technologies have allowed scientists to find a record of ancient human migrations in the DNA of living people.
“Every drop of human blood contains a history book written in the language of our genes,” says population geneticist Spencer Wells. The human genetic code, or genome, is 99.9 percent identical throughout the world. But while the bulk of our DNA is the same, what’s left is responsible for our individual differences — in eye color or disease risk, for example. On very rare occasions, a small change, called a mutation, can occur, which is then passed down to all of that person’s descendants. Generations later, finding that same mutation in two people's DNA indicates that they share the same ancestor. By comparing mutations in many different populations, scientists can trace their ancestral connections.
These ancient mutations are easiest to track in two places: in DNA that is passed from mother to child (called mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA for short), and in DNA that travels from father to son (known as the Y chromosome, the part of DNA that determines a child will be a boy). By comparing the mtDNA and Y chromosomes (染色体) of people from various populations, geneticists can get a rough idea of where and when those groups separated in the great migrations around the planet.

22、Every driver loves sailing through a series of green lights without having to stop and wait at a traffic light. Now, thanks to artificial intelligence, German researchers have found a way to reduce time spent at intersections. And they have gone further than that. This innovation is now being tested in the small German town of Lemgo.
For the research, scientists first studied algorithms taken from a busy intersection to learn about traffic patterns and where improvements were most needed. Actually, it is necessary to adjust waiting time at intersections as conventional methods are inflexible and cannot interpret all traffic flow patterns.
The new AI method uses radar sensors and high-resolution cameras to interpret traffic patterns in real time. They can determine the speed of traffic as well as waiting time and combine this with self-learning algorithms.
The intelligent lights are said to improve traffic flow by 10 to 15 percent, which results in money saved. (The EU estimates that traffic jams create economic damage that adds up to 100 billion Euros a year.) Aside from reducing commuting time, these traffic lights will reduce noise and CO2 emissions from cars moving slowly at intersections.
Another exciting development in this research focuses on pedestrians crossing intersections. Using AI, researchers can confirm how many people are waiting at a pedestrian crossing and whether some of these people will need extra time to cross the street. Using a 3D points cloud, they can tell if someone has disabilities or is elderly without identifying the individual.
Testing will be done until this summer in the German towns of Lemgo and Bielefeld, with researchers optimistic that it will be adopted abroad. “We are the first team in the world to test deep reinforcement learning for traffic light control under real-world conditions. And our testing work has encouraged others to make similar efforts,” scientist Arthur Müller said.

23、In the icy Himalayas, user kebi057 on TikTok, a video sharing platform, shows people around the world about everyday life in Tibet. And people are definitely taking a look. He has over 236,000 followers and nearly 4 million likes for his videos-clips of himself pulling his sled with his dog, preparing food and, in his most popular video, building a "natural refrigerator" out of ice blocks—to the amazement of people in the comments, who were amazed at his ice box.
When lockdown went into effect earlier this year, many people turned to TikTok to pass the time. The short-video platform has now hit over 2. 6 billion downloads globally and was the most downloaded app of 2020, according to mobile app analytics firm App Annie.
The pandemic is part of the reason for surging TikTok popularity. "It's been a bleak year for many people. Much of the content you see on TikTok is fun, upbeat and a welcome break from the day-to-day realities of the COVID crisis," says Damian Radcliffe, a professor at the University of Oregon who researches digital trends.
With TikTok's growing popularity, digital researcher Damian Radcliffe says one of the biggest issues the app is facing globally is the spread of misinformation on its platform. "We've already seen the app like many other platforms—filled with conspiracy(阴谋)theories, misinformation around elections and misinformation related to the COVID vaccine and the wider health crisis," he explains.
In India, TikTok launched a campaign called MatKarForward to tackle the issue of misinformation. The topic, which has received over 3. 7 billion views, encourages users to stop and think before forwarding videos that promote fake news, such as COVID-19 "homemade" remedies and various conspiracies.
【1】What's the author's purpose of writing paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic of the text.
B.To arouse the interest of the readers.
C.To present how enjoyable life is in Tibet.

【2】What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Pleasant.
B.Confusing
C.Depressing
D.Meaningful
【3】What's the author's attitude towards Tiktok's dealing with misinformation?
A.Negative.

24、 In the UK, the Met Office — which keeps track of the weather — chooses the names for storms but they’re asking for members of the public to help by suggesting new ones. It’s five years since they first asked people for ideas and that time they got more than 10,000 suggestions. 【1】.
Why do storms have names?
The Met Office decided to start giving storms names back in 2014, in the same way they do in America. The first windstorm to be named was Abigail on 10 November, 2015. 【2】 They think it will be easier to follow the progress of a storm on the TV, radio, or on social media, if it has a name.
【3】?
Since September 2015, the Met Office has asked people for suggestions for storm names. The most popular names put forward by the public are made into a list, along with other names suggested by Met Office. Sometimes the UK will be hit by storms from Europe or other countries, and the storm will keep the name the first country gave it — even if it doesn’t follow the UK’s alphabetical order - like Storm Jorge from Spain which hit Europe in February.
How big do storms have to be to get a name?
Not all storms will be big enough to get names — only those expected to cause significant damage. A storm will be named when it has the potential to cause an amber ‘be prepared’ or red ‘take action’ warning.
Who decides if they’re named after girls or boys?
The UK storms will take it in turns to be girls ‘or boys’ names.【4】 Scientists think that’s because people find female names less threatening.
Which storm name will be picked first?
【5】. That’s because the US National Hurricane Centre leaves out names that begin with these letters. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokesman said, “It’s just too difficult to find names beginning with X, Y and Z.” The Met Office has done the same thing to make sure official storm naming in the North Atlantic is consistent.
A.How are the names picked
B.What names do people like most
C.Unexpectedly, it’s becoming popular that people chase storms in different locations
D.The Met Office hoped that naming big storms will make people more aware of them and how dangerous they can be
E.They will be taken from the list in alphabetical order, but there are no storms that start with the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z
F.Strangely, research shows that hurricanes with female names are more likely to hurt more people than those with males names
G.During these years we’ve had lots of storms with different names including Storm Francis, Storm Dennis, and Storm Ophelia
