二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Debra Avery has been a horse lover since she was a little girl in San Diego. Her family couldn't afford a horse of its own, so Debra borrowed rides at the local horse-riding center, gaining the confidence only found atop a horse. Years later, Debra remembered those early days, and the lessons she learned with the horses at the riding center, and wanted to help other young women get the benefits of connecting with horses. "I always wanted to run a horse program for girls like me," says Debra. "I wanted to help them gain the courage to be around a horse and to care for a horse."

One day at the Los Angeles Horse-riding Center, as Debra rode beside fellow rider Judith Hopkins, she mentioned an inheritance (遗产) from her father-in-law and her desire to use it to serve disadvantaged girls. Judith had the same dream—and a name for the organization.

They founded Taking the Reins (TTR) in 1998. The organization serves more than 400 young women per year in after-school, weekend, and summer programs that feature horse riding and care, gardening and even competitive horse showing. Most participants live below the poverty line and often have not had reliable housing for more than six months at a time. Few have previous horse experience.

TTR uses farm and ranch experiences to teach responsibility, leadership, teamwork, and self-confidence. Director Dr. Jane Haven says, "A large number of our girls are somewhat autistic (孤独症的). I can't count how many of them have found their first social friends thanks to sharing this hobby and activity. Horses bring them out in such a wonderful way."

Jane also sees members of TTR program excel in school—100 percent of young women involved for four years or more have graduated from high school. Ninety-nine percent of those participants have gone on to attend four-year colleges.

Debra sees a more obvious impact—after a few weeks in the TTR program, the young women sit a little higher in their saddles (马鞍). "There's just something about sitting up on the back of a horse that gives them a boost of confidence."

【1】Debra's early life was greatly influenced by ________.

    A.her family

    B.horse riding

    C.school lessons

    D.her fellow rider

    【2】What programs does TTR offer?

    A.Horse riding and showing.

    B.Horse care and farming.

    C.Pet care and gardening.

    D.Weekend hiking and camping.

【3】Who was the organization founded for?

    A.Homeless and lonely women.

    B.Hard-working school girls.

    C.Female autistic patients.

    D.Poor horse-loving girls.

【4】In what way has TTR changed its members' life?

A.They have been given financial aid.

    B.They have achieved academic excellence.

C.They have grown into professional horse riders.

D.They have been provided with reliable housing.

【5】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A.TTR is a profit-making organization.

B.TTR program lasts a few weeks.

    C.The girls' confidence grows quickly.

D.The girls can ride taller horses.

  • 22、White light is made up of a mixture of different colors. Light travels in waves, and different colors have different wavelengths. Things seem a particular color because of the light they reflect or scatter[散射]—a leaf appears green because it reflects green light.

    Scattering Light

Shine a torch through an empty glass or bottle and look at the colour of the light in the bottle. Hold a piece of paper on the other side of the bottle and look at the colour of light that has passed through. Fill the glass or bottle with water and shine the torch through it. What colour is the light passing in the bottle or glass, and what colour is the light on the paper? Add a drop or two of milk and mix it thoroughly, and shine the torch through it again—what happens to the light in the glass or bottle, and the light on the paper?

Particles in suspension reflect light— this is called the “Tyndall Effect” (think of how car headlights reflect off fog, which is a suspension of water droplets in air).

Light travels directly through water, with little reflection and scattering, and the colour does not change. Milk in water is a suspension of fat and protein particles[微粒] in water. The suspended particles should change the colour of the light in the bottle or glass to a bluish[带蓝色的] tinge[淡色], with the light on the paper having a reddish tinge.

The blue part of the light (shorter wavelength) from the torch should be reflected and scattered by the particles in the suspension, more than the red, orange and yellow parts of the light (longer wavelength). When this scattered light reaches people’s eyes, it makes the mixture seem blue, particularly at the edges. The particles allow more of the red, orange and yellow light through, so the light on the paper will have more of these colours in it.

The light at the centre of the glass or bottle may also seem to have a reddish tinge—this is because it has passed through more particles than the light at the edges, so more of the blue light has been scattered away.

    Blue Skies

Air molecules[微粒] also affect light. They absorb the light and then release (scatter) it in another direction. This is called the “Rayleigh Effect”. Air molecules absorb and release blue light more often than red, orange and yellow light. As this light is scattered, it reaches people’s eyes, making the sky seem blue. The red, orange and yellow light carries straight on without being scattered by the air molecules, so people do not see as much of it.

1From the text, why a leaf appears green?

    A. Because a leaf reflects green light.

    B. Because many of the leaves contain chlorophyll(叶绿体) is green.

    C. Because the leaves absorb the green light.

2what happens to the light in the glass or bottle, and the light on the paper?

    A. Light travels directly through water, with little reflection and scattering.

    B. It would happen, "Tindall effect".

    C. Water, milk, fat and protein particles in aqueous suspension.

    D. Suspended particles can change the color of light in a bottle or glass blue color

3What can be inferred from the sixth paragraph?

    A. Light red, orange and yellow part of the light is the long wave, the blue part is shorter

    B. Especially at the edges, when the light reaches the people's body, it makes the mixture blue.

    C. The light on the paper will have fewer of these colors in it.

    D. The blue part of the light from the torch should be reflected and scattered by the particles in the suspension, more than the red light.

4What conclusions can be drawn from the full text.

    A. White light is the most simple light

    B. The light in the center of a glass or bottle is also a red hue because it has passed the light particles over the edge.

    C. Air molecules are also affected by light, which is called "Rayleigh effect".

    D. As the light is scattered, the light reaches the people's eyes, making the sky blue.

  • 23、   Last July, Angela Peters, 36, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon located at the Walmart shopping center in Burton, Michigan, with the idea of painting her nails. But Peters, who has cerebral palsy(脑瘫), was turned away. The salon (which is not owned by Walmart), she says, told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly do the job given that her hands shook. What was meant to be a day of beauty bliss for Peters was now a disappointment.

Watching the interaction from a few feet away was a Walmart cashier about to go on her break. Ebony Harris, 40, recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. Now what she recognized in Peters was a kindred spirit. “She’s just like you, me, my daughter, anybody,” Harris told ABC News, “She wants to look pretty. So why can’t she?”

Harris approached Peters. “Do you want me to do your nails?” she asked. A smile spread across Peters’ face. “Yeah!” Having found a table for two, Harris gently took Peter’s hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails.

“I was a little nervous and was shaking because I didn’t want to mess her nails up,” Harris admitted. “I told her she’s a blessing to anybody, not just me. She makes me look at life and appreciate it much more than I have.”

Watching it all with amazement and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. What struck her most was the ease and gentleness displayed by Harris as she painted Peters’ nails, all the while chatting as if they were old friends. Smith was so taken by the scene that she wrote about it on Facebook. “They were so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl’s day!”

Peters, who runs a poetry website, harbors no bitterness toward the nail salon that turned her away. “When people do us wrong, we must forgive,” Peters wrote on Facebook. “I just want to educate people that those with different challenges, like being in a wheelchair, can have our own business and get our nails done like anyone else.”

1Why was Peters declined when she wanted to have her nails painted?

A.She insisted on sitting in a wheelchair.

B.She was not a regular customer of the salon.

C.Her hands shook involuntarily due to disability.

D.There was no need for her to have nails painted.

2It can be inferred from “a kindred spirit” in Paragraph 2 that _______.

A.Peters was in high spirits just like others around her.

B.Peters was approached with special attention and care.

C.Peters was more tolerant of the denial than normal people.

D.Peters was no different from the people around her.

3In Paragraph 4, Harris referred to Angela Peters as “a blessing” because _______.

A.Peters deserved to be happy and be treated kindly.

B.Harris was reminded why she should be grateful.

C.Harris felt obliged to offer her a hand on a voluntary basis

D.Peters got her nails done despite the previous rejection.

4What may well be Angela Peters’ guiding principle in life?

A.Beauty is about having a pretty mind, a pretty soul, as well as pretty poetry.

B.Forgive others who have wronged us, and we are likely to enjoy our life more.

C.Being grateful is a way to sing for our life which comes just from our love and hope.

D.Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.

  • 24、If you need to spend time on the road,it’s important to find ways to keep safe on your feet. Don’t suppose it's your right of way. Yes, you might be crossing at the right place, at the right time, within the crosswalk area, but you are still exposed to danger. It could be a distracted driver, or a cyclist with a loose sense of traffic rules, so you could still get hurt. You can be in the right legally, but that won’t be much help when you're in the hospital.

Follow pedestrian signals. Just as drivers aren’t supposed to speed up to beat a light when crossing through an intersection, pedestrians need to take the same care when obeying their own signals. If the hand is flashing and the countdown is into single digits (数字),stay where you are. Trying to outrun the flashing hand is unsafe, especially as cars try to clear the intersection before the light turns red.

Give drivers enough time to stop when crossing. Don’t suppose that drivers will jam on their brakes when you hit the crosswalk signals. Some provinces, such as Alberta, issue (发出)a ticket if you don’t give drivers enough time to brake.

Cross quickly. Once you’ve followed all of the other rules, and it is safe to cross the street, don’t then just wander along in front of six lanes (车道)of traffic. There’s no need to run or jog, but respect the drivers who respected you enough to stop for you.

【1】Who is the text intended for?

    A. Drivers.   B. Cyclists.   C. Police.   D. Pedestrians.

2What does the underlined word “distracted” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Considerate. B. Strange.

    C. Kind-hearted.  D. Absent-minded.

3In what case would pedestrians in Alberta be fined?

    A. Racing against time with drivers.

    B. Following crosswalk signals.

    C. Crossing the crosswalk area.

    D. Walking outside six lanes.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Rules for Traffic Police

    B. Tips to Keep Safe on Your Feet

    C. Things Every Driver Should Know

    D. Signals for Both Pedestrians and Drivers

    Twelve Days of Kindness

Although it was less than two weeks before Christmas, I found it difficult to be in a festive mood. We had moved to Canada, and holidays were difficult for us because we missed our friends and relatives in Minnesota. Our family was also going through a very difficult year, with health problems and a serious work-related problem for my husband.

“Mom, How I wish we could spend Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma in Minnesota. I really miss them and my friends there.” said my fifteen-year-old daughter, Rachel.

“I know, Rachel. So would I,” I said. “But Minnesota is 2,000 kilometers away. Don’t you remember how hard it was to drive in that snowstorm last year? And then the temperature dropped to-30℃ on our way back?”

“I remember,” she said and ducked her head disappointedly.

We thought driving to Minnesota for Christmas was too risky and buying airline tickets for three people was out of the question. We would be spending Christmas alone in Canada, and had no money for a Christmas tree or a Christmas dinner.

We were surprised when the doorbell rang. It was dark and cold outside, and we weren’t expecting anyone. Hesitantly, Rachel stood up and went forward to open the door, and then said, “Mom, there’s a big box on the doorstep and nobody is out here!” My husband also went and looked. But there was nobody insight.

They brought the box in. We were surprised to find that the box contained many packages covered in bright Christmas paper. Each had a typewritten note: Open Dec.14, Open Dec.15...There were a total of twelve—the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” The note read: Our LOVE is given anonymously(匿名地), so enjoy fun with your family, but don’t tell anyone please.
