  • 22、The world’s only captive (圈养) brown giant panda, Qizai, has been taking more exercise in preparation for the upcoming breeding (繁育) season. He is encouraged to stand up by keepers who place food on the end of a stick held just out of his reach. Panda experts believe that strengthening the giant animal’s legs will improve his ability to breed successfully.

The world’s first brown panda was discovered in 1985 in the Qinling Mountains. All photographs of wild brown pandas were taken in the area, which they were named after. The Qinling giant panda, first recognized in 2005, is a subspecies of giant panda. As well as its brown and white fur, it has a smaller and rounder skull and a shorter nose than the more familiar Sichuan giant panda.

Qizai, whose name means the seventh son, was found as two-month-old cub, weak and alone, by researchers in a nature reserve in the Qinling Mountains. For his safety, the researchers took him to the nearby Shanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue Centre where he was given medical treatment and fed on milk from other pandas.

There are 1, 864 giant pandas in the wild, according to World Wildlife. They live mainly in bamboo forests high in the mountains of south-west China, mostly in Sichuan province, but they can also be found in Shanxi province, where Qizai is from. He was previously thought to be the only living brown panda in the world until a wild panda with the same colour pattern was spotted roaming in a nature reserve in Shanxi in March, 2018. Up to now spotting brown pandas in the wild has taken place no more than ten times, all of which were in the central Qinling Mountains.

【1】Why do keepers put food beyond Qizai’s reach?

A.To prepare him for the return to the wild.

B.To train him to amuse zoo visitors.

C.To help him exercise his legs.

D.To ensure him a balanced diet.

【2】What can we infer about Qizai from the text?

A.He was first found in 2005.

B.He is a Qinling giant panda.

C.His seventh son is 2 months old.

D.He was the only living brown panda.

【3】What conclusion can be drawn from the last paragraph?

A.The sighting of wild brown pandas is a rare happening.

B.The Qinling Mountains are home to most wild pandas.

C.The number of giant pandas is growing rapidly.

D.All giant pandas are of the same colour.

    【4】What’s the text mainly about?

    A.Life of captive pandas.

    B.Endangered giant pandas.

    C.The Qinling giant panda.

    D.Rare wildlife protection.

  • 23、   It wasn’t until Friends took off that I was a part of this extraordinary organization, St. Jude. And that was 25 years ago. I am very honored to be a part of St. Jude and I’ve been in love with it ever since.

Right around this time every fall I get to spend the day with a family of St. Jude. I always say it’s the best day of the year and the hardest day of the year. And a few years back I met a little girl named Sawyer. She was seven at the time and I remember she had this pink little dress on and these big angelic eyeballs. The chemo (化疗) had taken all of her hair and she had these tiny little tumors (肿瘤) on her body that she called her “bumps”.

She was just with me the whole time as we ran through the script again and again and again. And at the end of the day after hearing the word repeated over and over again, she looked up at me with those big blue eyeballs and she asked me, “What is cancer?” I just looked at her. Oh! I’m not equipped to answer this question. Here was this little girl who was fighting this deadly disease every single day and she didn’t even know what was the word for it. It was just part of her reality and she was just making the absolute best of it.

That’s what’s unbelievable about these children. Despite everything that they ate up against and as much pain as they’re often in, they are lively. They are joyful. They are fearless. And that’s part of the magic of St. Jude. I’m so honored to support their work because they’re giving children the best care on the planet so that they can regain their childhood, so that they can find their little inner superhero. They’re doing it at no cost so that the families can focus on their little ones, live without worrying about crippling hospital bills and their cutting edge treatments will soon one day find a cure. And that is what every child deserves to know, that they are seen, that they are powerful and are loved, that they deserve a seat at the table, that anything they have to say or any question they have to ask is of value, even if we don’t have all the answers for it.

So thank you very much for recognizing the work of this remarkable organization and for celebrating the power in each and every one of us. Thank you.

1Which of the following can best describe the little girl named Sawyer?

    A.Reliable. B.Humorous.

    C.Considerate. D.Innocent.

2From the text we can infer that St. Jude is home to ________.

A.teachers who are devoted to teaching

B.artists who have achieved great success

C.children who are struck by misfortune

    D.students who are academically outstanding

3The underlined word “crippling” in paragraph 4 probably means _________.

    A.upsetting B.inspiring

    C.exciting D.weakening

  • 24、If you’re a fan of fast fashion, your choices may be narrowing in the near future.

At the end of 2020, fast-fashion giant H&M said it would close 350 stores worldwide. Recently, Spanish fashion giant Inditex announced that it would close all its Bershka, Pull & Bear and Stradivarius stores in China. It all indicates that fast fashion is slowing down, noted the website Fast Company.

A major reason is the shift in the mindset(心态) of consumers. Millennials, those who were born in the 1980s or 1990s, are now the largest consumer group. Unlike their predecessors(前人), millennials are more financially stable, and thus low-priced fast fashion is not their priority. According to The South China Morning Post, more people are starting to care about quality and the stories behind a product.

Another factor is the growing concern over the fashion industry’s effect on the environment. As The New York Times noted, the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters of clean water and three-fifths of clothes produced in a year end up in landfill(垃圾场). As there is more awareness of the climate crisis, younger people are pursuing more eco-friendly choices.

Molly, 22, is one of them. Before she went to college, she used to frequent fast-fashion shops like Forever 21 and H&M. But after taking a class that focused Fast fashion slows down on the environmental impact of clothing production, her preference changed. Now, she tries to shop in a way that is both sustainable(可持续的) and affordable: She shops second-hand. “My friend showed me how easy it was to be thrifty(节约的). and I developed a new personal style that focused less on trends but on basics that don’t go out of style.” she told MTV News.

In order to survive in the competitive market, many fast-fashion brands are making changes as well. For example, Inditex said that the company plans for all of its clothes to be sustainable by 2025.

“Sustainability is a never-ending task in which everyone here is involved.” said Pablo Isla. CEO of Inditex.

【1】Why is fast fashion unpopular among millennials?

    A.Millennials follow former generations’ style.

    B.Millennials prefer cheaper clothes.

C.Millennials attach more importance to quality.

D.Millennials like brands with a long history.

【2】What is the main idea of paragraph 4?

A.Unsold clothes are a threat to the environment.

B.Low-quality fashion products don’t last long.

C.Climate change should be blamed on the fashion industry.

D.More people prefer eco-friendly fashion products.

【3】What is Molly’s new way of shopping?

    A.She likes thrifty brands.

    B.She buys used clothes.

    C.She prefers trendy clothes.

    D.She buys only necessary clothes.

【4】The author used the example of Inditex at the end to show_________.

A.how competition is becoming more fierce in the fashion industry

B.how sustainability has become the top priority for most fashion brands

C.how the fast-fashion industry is suffering a big loss

D.how a major company can change their products to fit the market

【5】What is the author’s opinion on the future development of fast fashion?

    A.Promising.

    B.Hopeless.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Unpredictable.
