二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   While every dog owner knows their dogs can read their moods perfectly, scientists have always been a little doubtful. Now thanks to some researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, we finally have some convincing evidence.

For their study. biologist Corson Miller and his team exposes eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy. Half the dogs were rewarded for touching the screen when shown a happy face, while the other half got their treat for selecting those that appeared angry.

Interestingly, the dogs were not provided with the entire face. Some dogs were shown only upper halves while the others observed lower halves. That's because the scientists believe humans show their emotions on their entire face.

After some training like how to recognize small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not only on a familiar face but on a strange face. The researchers concluded the dogs were smart enough to read human emotions.

They also found those being trained to read angry expressions took a longer time to learn. They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces disgusting, causing them to withdraw quickly. However, once the smart dogs realized they were getting rewarded, the trepidation seemed to disappear. In fact, the dogs had such a good time playing the computer "game". That scientists had a hard time keeping them away from the touch screens after the study was completed.

The researchers also noticed only dogs with a male owner had a harder time understanding the expressions correctly. Since the touch-screen models were all females, this confirmed what has been observed in previous studies dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of people that are the same gender as their owner.

【1】How did the scientists conduct the experiment?

A.By leaving dogs to women who are either happy or angry.

B.By mixing the selected dogs together.

C.By rewarding only half of the dogs touching the screen

D.By showing digital pictures of women's happy or angry faces.

A.are fond of the male faces

B.are uninterested in telling the emotions on the entire faces

C.have difficulty telling the moods on the faces of males

D.can only recognize emotions of females

【4】What is the best title for this passage?

    A.Mood Changes Influence Dogs

    B.Dogs Identify the Moods

  • 22、   Unicycles are one-wheeled vehicles that developed from the original bicycle, the Penny Farthing, which consisted of a large front wheel and a much smaller back wheel. When this bike hit bumps(凸块) or suddenly slowed down, the back wheel came off the ground, so many riders learned to balance on just the front wheel. Thus, bicycle-makers began making vehicles with just one wheel.

Some of the benefits of riding a unicycle include burning calories, and increasing your levels of coordination (协调), concentration and balance. Because unicycles don’t have any handlebars, riders must balance, using only their abdominal (腹部的)muscles and leg muscles. This helps you build a healthier core. Long cycling sessions also increase your heart rate, which can lead to a healthier cardiovascular (心血管的) system. Riding a unicycle is an effective way to get in a low-impact workout for those with damaged knees and legs.

Unicycling is a fun activity regardless of your ability level. Riding a unicycle is self-motivating and psychologically stimulating because you will notice improvements each time you ride. Some people find that it gives them feelings of control when they can achieve balancing and riding on just one wheel.

Some riders use their unicycles as their primary mode of transportation for work or school. Because unicycles don't require any type of fuel, you can save money at pump. Unicycles also have only a few moving parts that might break. This means that you typically don't have to spend much money on repairs. You also won' t need to spend money on storing or transporting your unicycle.

Unicycling is a somewhat uncommon activity. Because of this, a sense of unity tends to grow among unicycle riders. Many riders travel significant distances just to go on rides and spend time with other unicyclists. Unicycling is often a family activity, and riding together can bring family members closer.

    【1】Why were one-wheel vehicles created?

A.Because it was more beneficial for one's health.

B.Because it was more likely to avoid road bumps.

C.Because the front wheel only could also be used for balancing.

    D.Because a bicycle’s back wheel wasn’t fixed well.

【2】What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Having a handlebar.

    B.Stopping a unicycle.

    C.Increasing strength.

    D.Balancing a unicycle.

【3】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A.Typical features of cycling.

    B.Basic modes of transportation.

    C.Economic benefits of unicycling.

D.Ways to store and transport unicycles.

【4】The text is mainly written to.

    A.introduce benefits of unicycling

    B.show how unicycles are spread

    C.display varieties of unicycles

    D.advocate cycling for teenagers

  • 23、Exploring Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Gaining a richer and deeper understanding of psychology can help people achieve insights into their own actions as well as a better understanding of other people. 【1】

One important benefit from a psychology major is that it teaches the student about the human mind and why people act in various manners. Not all psychology majors will become psychologists. 【2】 All people must interact with others whether it is at home or at a workplace. People respond to these interactions in a wide number of ways. For instance, the person may not know why he or she is bothered by a specific action at work. However, the person who has studied psychology has an obvious advantage in this area.

Psychology also offers the individual insight into himself or herself. As the person learns about the human mind, how it works and why people behave in specific manners, the person may also begin to recognize both harmful and helpful thought patterns in himself or herself.

This may lead the person to an increased level of self-awareness. 【3】 It also shows the person where he or she possesses strength and crucial skills for the modern world. Individuals who are more self-aware are more likely to accomplish their goals and dreams.

【4】 A person may enter a vast field where psychologists and those trained in psychology work. These areas include industrial psychology, school psychology, private practice, organizational behavioral fields, law enforcement and virtually every other field.

【5】 As stated, there are a number of career opportunities from which a psychology major may choose.

A.Self-awareness is a vital skill for any person to have.

B.It shows the individual what areas the person needs to strengthen.

C.As a result, psychology becomes an incredibly popular college major.

D.A psychology major examines the science of human behavior and mental processes.

E.All fields have the opportunity to benefit from the guidance that psychology can offer.

F.The third reason why psychology is a useful major is that it opens up a wide range of career opportunities.

G.However, all psychology majors will develop an increased awareness about human behavior and thought patterns.

  • 24、   Strange ice rings in Siberia’s Lake Baikal have puzzled scientists for decades, but now the mystery apparently has been solved. The answer: the rings are caused by warm, circular currents of water under the ice, called eddies (漩涡).

The eddies’ strong currents melt the ice at the edge, but weaker ones keep the center frozen. “Results of our field surveys show that there are warm eddies that circulate in a clockwise (顺时针的) direction under the ice cover,” said Alexei Kouraev, a hydrologist at the University of Toulouse, in a NASA statement. “In the eddy center, the ice does not melt — even though the water is warm — because the currents are weak,” he said. “But on the eddy boundary, the currents are stronger, and warmer water leads to rapid melting.”

During field work, Kouraev and his colleagues drilled holes near ice rings and set sensors capable of measuring the temperature and salinity (盐浓度) of the water to a depth of 700 feet. They found that the water in the eddies was 2 to 4 warmer than the surrounding water.

Most of the rings appear in March or April and have a width of about 3 to 4 miles — too big to recognize from the ground but easily seen from satellites above. Some rings were ephemeral while others lasted for weeks or even months.

Lake Baikal is the world’s largest and deepest freshwater lake, according to Gizmodo. It’s home to many varieties of fish not seen anywhere else in the world, and even a population of freshwater seals.

Researchers are still investigating what causes Baikal’s eddies but think it’s likely because of wind patterns, rivers that flow into the lake and the shape of the lake’s coastline and bottom.

1Which word can best replace the underlined word “ephemeral” in paragraph 4?

    A.Steady. B.Current.

    C.Fundamental. D.Temporary.

2Why is the ice in the center of ice rings frozen while that at the edge is melted?

A.Because the center of ice rings is 2 to 4 warmer than the edge.

B.Because the currents in the center are less powerful.

C.Because it is too wide to be recognized or melted.

D.Because water in the center circulates in a clockwise direction.

3Which of the following statements about Lake Baikal’s eddies is TRUE?

A.They are caused by hot and circular currents under the ice.

B.The ice in the center of Lake Baikal’s eddies melts faster than that of the edge.

C.Researchers are uncertain about the exact reason of the eddies’ existence.

D.Lake Beikal’s eddies can only be measured at the depth of 700 feet.

4What maybe the best title for the passage?

A.What’s causing the giant ice rings in Siberia?

B.The mystery of the eddies' in the Lake Baikal uncovered.

C.The largest and deepest freshwater lake — Lake Baikal.

D.Why does the edge of an ice ring melt faster?

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was August, the peak season for tourism. Olav Hylland, the owner of a local restaurant, was expecting as many as 500 tourists to visit and eat there. With a joyful heart, he jumped into a van, which he had just bought to transport cargo for his restaurant, and set off.

Leaving his home, he turned onto the main road with a tunnel 300 meters ahead. The 11.4 kilometer tunnel was the only way to access the local scenic spot, where his restaurant was located. Two years earlier a truck caught fire inside it and the tunnel's closure for repairs was a disastrous blow to Olav's business. The road to his restaurant was blocked and the stream of tourists halted. Although it was difficult, he managed to keep their staff on.

“And today will be a perfect day.” Olav thought.

Inside the tunnel everything went normal. But when he was near the end, Olav spotted an unusual light 50 meters ahead. Then he saw something burning.

Horrified, he stopped dead in his tracks. A tour bus was on fire! At the back where the engine was, dozens of tourists were stumbling towards him, getting away from the flames." They're going the wrong way." Olav thought, knowing the tunnel exit was just 500 meters ahead round a bend ahead of him. Then he realized the bus was now burning so fiercely that it was impossible for them to get around it.

As a former volunteer firefighter, Olav first had to raise the alarm. Grabbing his cell phone, he entered the codes with shaking hands. “A bus is on fire! Close the tunnel gates!” Both gates were shut to avoid the entry of more vehicles, but the thick smoke was pouring out of the bus in his direction under the influence of the strong wind. In no time it would black out the tunnel, choking and blinding anyone inside it.

There was no way the poor tourists could outrun the toxic fumes.

    Every minute counted.
