二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   New York is an overwhelming city to visit with children. What follows is carefully collected advice from New Yorkers on how to cover the city right.

    Tenement Museum

The Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side offers a fantastic glimpse into urban family life. Guided tours reveal the daily routines of generations of Irish, Jewish and Italian immigrants who made their mark then quickly moved up and out. Pick up a copy of “All-of-a-Kind Family”or a vintage toy in the museum shop, one of the city’s best.

    MoMA Museum

MoMA Museum does an excellent job making modern and contemporary art accessible to children as young as 4. On weekend mornings, guided tours are divided into age-appropriate groups in which children can observe a number of works and draw; later they gain free admittance to the entire museum. The cafeteria is both grown-up and child-friendly, and there’s an art laboratory with hands-on activities and even an audio guide for young people.

Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

The most significant in the museum is the Space Shuttle Pavilion, which is scheduled to reopen in July, showcasing the Enterprise, NASA’s first space shuttle, which arrived last year. The U.S.S. Intrepid, a World War II-era aircraft carrier, is worthwhile in itself. While the complex suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy, most of its facilities are once again shipshape. Families may want to consider Operation Slumber, which allows for overnight visits with special activities for children 6 and older.

    Children’s Museum of the Arts

All the artwork here is made by children, and visitors can make their own bonus: you don’t have to clean up. An area for younger children includes sand, Play-Doh and guided music activities. Children go berserk for the Ball Pond, a closed-in area of oversize balls. Is it experiential art? An installation? Children need not bother with such imponderables.

1Which of the following museums offer free admission?

    A.Tenement Museum. B.MoMa Museum.

C.Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. D.Children’s Museum of Arts.

2How is Children’s Museum of the Arts different from the other three museums?

A.It is located in New York.

B.It exhibits a lot of artwork.

C.Its artwork is all created by children.

D.It used to be damaged in the Hurrican Sandy.

3What do the four museums have in common?

    A.They are all children-friendly.

B.They all show visitors contemporary artwork.

C.They can offer visitors activities to take part in.

D.They are all suitable for children over 4 years old.

  • 22、Take the wheel of an electric vehicle and prepare to be amazed. The latest technology is there, with tablet-like screens instead of old-fashioned switches. Add falling price which makes owning and running many electric vehicles (short for EV)as cheap as fossil-fuel alternatives, and the open road signals. Above all, the instant acceleration of battery power makes driving easy and exciting.

EV should be recharged roughly every 250 miles. When you do find a public charging point, it is sometimes inaccessible, which causes “range anxiety”. It is one of the main reasons drivers give for not buying an EV. Who might install them? Drivers will need a mix of fast "long distance" chargers installed near motorways and slower “top-up” chargers available in the car parks of shopping centers, restaurants and so on. Dedicated charging firms and carmakers are investing in infrastructure. Oil companies are putting chargers in petrol stations and buying charging companies.

Yet the charging business suffers from big problems. One is how to adjust between the planning authorities and grid firms. Another is the cost. To start with, profits may be difficult to attain because the networks will not at first be heavily used. A related risk is that the coverage will have gaps. And then there is the question of competing networks. Drivers should be able to switch from one to the other without having to sign up to them all.

What to do? Government is experimenting. As well as funding EV sales, many are throwing cash at public chargers. America's law sets aside $7.5 billion to create 500,000 public stations by 2030. Britain plans to require new building to install chargers. Yet the problem of coverage and convenience will remain.

【1】What is the biggest highlight of an EV?

    A.Falling price.

    B.Replacing switches.

    C.Running self-drive.

    D.Instant acceleration of battery power.

【2】What does the underlined words "range anxiety" in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The reason for drivers' not buying an EV.

B.The issue of who might install charging points.

C.The doubt of whether drivers can charge free in petrol stations.

D.The worry of drivers' not finding accessible public charging points.

【3】What results in the problem of the cost?

    A.Frequent power failure.

    B.The incomplete coverage of network.

C.Drivers' not being capable of signing up for network.

D.A bad relationship between the authority and the grid.

【4】What is the author's attitude towards the government's plan?

    A.Recognized.

    B.Neutral.

    C.Prejudiced.

    D.Unconcerned.

  • 23、   With severe mental challenges and amblyopia (弱视), Xu Haofang’s idea of the world was limited to her home. Apart from her parents, interacting with others often proved to be a painful experience.

But Xu’s reality was changed when she started receiving help from the Zhang Xinya Rehabilitation (康复) Center in Shanghai. “She used to be totally dependent on us and barely spoke. Now, she has learned how to write in Chinese, how to wash the dishes and how to do the laundry herself,” says Yan Ping, Xu’s mother.

Founded in 2012 by Zhang Xinya, the center since its establishment has helped dozens of individuals like Xu with 21 of them eventually securing a job. Besides those having challenges, the center also provides assistance to those who are visually or hearing impaired (受损的). “We can unearth their potential and teach them the ability to take care of themselves,” says the 73-year-old, “By doing this, I also hope that their parents can be hopeful of their children’s future.”

Zhang Xinya herself is also a mother to a girl with mental challenges. To help her daughter build meaningful connections with society, Zhang took her to a government-funded center to learn physical exercises that would improve her motor sills Zhang later decided to volunteer at the center, which eventually inspired her to open her own rehabilitation facility (场所).

The center provides various classes conducted by professional teachers and psychological counselors and everyday skills are included in the syllabus (教学大纲). More than 400 lawyers, public health professionals and doctors have been invited to the station to give lectures. These individuals with special needs also receive heath checks at Zhang’s center.

“Many of the individuals could not take care of themselves when they first came, but now they can hold chopstick or spoon and eat by themselves. Some used to remain silent all the time but they can now sing and dance,” says Zhang. “Seeing them make progress is what makes this all worthwhile. This is what drives me to keep going.”

  • 24、Earlier this week the online UK supermarket Ocado told its customers that it had “limited ability” to deliver ice ream. Why? Because the price of natural gas has increased greatly, which has hit the supply of CO2 in the UK. And that has led to a cut in the supply of dry ice that supermarkets use to keep food cool in their delivery vans (小型货车). So no ice cream.

This mini crisis has been fairly quickly resolve, for now at least. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry. This incident serves as a timely reminder of just how reliant we are on fossil fuels. Despite our optimistic enthusiasm for wind and solar power, one way or another oil and gas use is shot through every part of our economic and social lives. That will be the case for many decades to come.

In his recently updated book There is No Planet B, Mike Berners-Lee lays out the challenge. When we talk about shifting from fossil fuels to clean energy of one kind or another, we aren’t discussing taking the amount of energy we use now and producing that amount in a different way. Instead, our target is always on the move. The more energy we can get our hands on, the more we use—even if our use of it becomes more efficient.

Energy usage is going to keep rising, while energy transitions (转变) tend to both take a very long time and never actually end. We just pile new sources on top of old. The world still uses much the same amount of traditional biomass (wood etc) as it did 100 years ago. We are running to stand still. This will change. But not as fast as you might like to think. In 2019, 33 percent of our new power generation needs were met by renewable energy. That’s a start. But 40 percent were met by natural gas.

There’s urgency here of course—which might speed things up. But there is something else that might slow us down. It didn’t take much to move people to fossil fuels—they are relatively easy to extract, relatively easy to transport, hugely energy dense and efficient and, of course, cheap. Until their externalities were understood, who could possibly have objected? Our current transition is different: people and companies will switch not because the new sources are easier to access, cheaper or more energy dense but because regulation mandates that they must.

Either way, the truth is that whether we like it or not our energy transition involves long term reliance on fossil fuels. That means we should stop demolishing them. Instead, we should focus on making their extraction cleaner and more efficient while we wait for the engineering challenges around a renewables-led future to be solved.

If we don’t do this—if we allow ourselves to be beguiled by the idea that solar is so advanced that we no longer need filthy fuels to have ice cream, we, will find the future held back by needlessly expensive energy—and almost certainly ice-cream free.

【1】What do the first two paragraphs mainly show?

    A.The necessity for traditional fuels.

    B.Our enthusiasm for clean energy.

    C.The seriousness of energy crisis.

    D.UK’s dependence on dry ice.

    【2】According to Mike Berners-Lee, ______.

B.the use of energy becomes more efficient

C.energy transition is far from being realized

    A.wasting

    B.devaluing

    C.distributing

    D.justifying

【4】What is the writer’s attitude toward the transition to the renewable energy?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Defensive.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Cautious.
