二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   New York is an overwhelming city to visit with children. What follows is carefully collected advice from New Yorkers on how to cover the city right.

    Tenement Museum

The Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side offers a fantastic glimpse into urban family life. Guided tours reveal the daily routines of generations of Irish, Jewish and Italian immigrants who made their mark then quickly moved up and out. Pick up a copy of “All-of-a-Kind Family”or a vintage toy in the museum shop, one of the city’s best.

    MoMA Museum

MoMA Museum does an excellent job making modern and contemporary art accessible to children as young as 4. On weekend mornings, guided tours are divided into age-appropriate groups in which children can observe a number of works and draw; later they gain free admittance to the entire museum. The cafeteria is both grown-up and child-friendly, and there’s an art laboratory with hands-on activities and even an audio guide for young people.

Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

The most significant in the museum is the Space Shuttle Pavilion, which is scheduled to reopen in July, showcasing the Enterprise, NASA’s first space shuttle, which arrived last year. The U.S.S. Intrepid, a World War II-era aircraft carrier, is worthwhile in itself. While the complex suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy, most of its facilities are once again shipshape. Families may want to consider Operation Slumber, which allows for overnight visits with special activities for children 6 and older.

    Children’s Museum of the Arts

All the artwork here is made by children, and visitors can make their own bonus: you don’t have to clean up. An area for younger children includes sand, Play-Doh and guided music activities. Children go berserk for the Ball Pond, a closed-in area of oversize balls. Is it experiential art? An installation? Children need not bother with such imponderables.

1Which of the following museums offer free admission?

    A.Tenement Museum. B.MoMa Museum.

C.Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. D.Children’s Museum of Arts.

2How is Children’s Museum of the Arts different from the other three museums?

A.It is located in New York.

B.It exhibits a lot of artwork.

C.Its artwork is all created by children.

D.It used to be damaged in the Hurrican Sandy.

3What do the four museums have in common?

    A.They are all children-friendly.

B.They all show visitors contemporary artwork.

C.They can offer visitors activities to take part in.

D.They are all suitable for children over 4 years old.

  • 22、   Nobody ever said science education was easy. Certainly the concepts like quantum mechanics can be hard to grasp. But what really complicates the endeavor is that we're also trying to teach the subject while helping students understand the nature of science itself.

All too often, young people get the impression that science is about learning certain "laws" and then applying them to different situations. Rather, science is the process of building the concepts through the collection of experimental evidence. Let's not call these concepts laws, but models. Science is all about building and testing models.

Of course, we can't start from scratch. If students had to build their own models from the ground up, it would be like trying to learn programming by inventing computers. As Isaac Newton said, we stand on the shoulders of giants. We must go from models built by others.

But there's still another challenge in science education less recognized: Students often enter a course with their own unarticulated ideas about how the world works. We call these "misconceptions" but it's important to realize that these are also models, based on their life experiences, which "make sense" to the students.

What I'd like to suggest is that this actually provides a great way into the adventure of science and an opportunity to meet our objectives as educators. If you can create a situation that challenges students' assumptions and produces conceptual conflict, that's a great opportunity for learning.

Here's an example that I've used on the topic of light rays. I set up a point light source and put a piece of cardboard in front of it. There's a small pinhole in the cardboard and a white screen behind. What do you expect to see? No surprise: A light shining through a pinhole makes a dot on the screen. But what if I have TWO light sources with the same single hole? Many students complain that science is tricky.

OK, that is a problem. The point isn't supposed to be that science is tricky but that learning is tricky. It's hard to change students' ideas, so we deliberately put them in a position to confront their internal model. Here, students have the idea that the spot on the screen is due to the pinhole - a natural conclusion - so one hole means one spot. But actually light travels radially outward from each light source in straight lines. (Check the top view (俯视图)of the two lights, the pinhole, and the screen below.)

But really, the answer is not the point. What I'm saying here is that in education, we set things up so students get it wrong. That's how they learn. Learning requires getting past their own ideas. You can't get physically fit without breaking a sweat and you can't really learn, at a fundamental level, without a little conflict in your head. • 23、The term “seal” is often used to refer to both seals and sea lions, but there are several characteristics that set seals and sea lions apart.

Seals and sea lions are both in the order Carnivora and suborder Pinnipedia, thus they are called “pinnipeds.” Pinnipeds are mammals that are well-adapted for swimming. They usually have a streamlined barrel shape (桶形) and four flippers at the end of each limb (四肢). They also give birth to live young and nurse their young. Pinnipeds are protected by a thick layer of fat under their skin and fur to keep them warm in water. There are three families of pinnipeds: the Phocidae, the earless or true seals; the Otariidae, the eared seals, and the Odobenidae, the walruses.

Characteristics of Phocidae (Earless or True Seals)

Earless seals have no visible ear flaps, although they still have ears, which may be visible as a dark spot or small hole on the side of their head.

    “True” seals:

    Have no external ear flaps.

Swim with their hind flippers. Their hind flippers always face backward and are furred.

Have front flippers that are short, furry and thick in appearance.

Can be found in both marine and freshwater environments.

Characteristics of Otariidae (Eared Seals, Including Fur Seals and Sea Lions)

One of the most noticeable features of eared seals is their ears, but they also move around differently than true seals.

    Eared seals:

    Have external ear flaps.

Are only found in marine environments.

Swim with their front flippers. Unlike earless seals, their hind flippers can turn forward, and they are able to walk, and even run, on their flippers. The seals you may see performing at marine parks are often sea lions.

May gather in larger groups than true seals. Sea lions are much more vocal than true seals, and make a variety of loud, barking noises.

    Characteristics of Walruses

Wondering about walruses, and how they differ from seals and sea lions? Walruses are pinnipeds, but they are in the family, Odobenidae. One obvious difference between walruses, seals and sea lions is that walruses are the only pinnipeds with tusks—a pair of long pointed teeth. These tusks are present in both males and females.

Other than tusks, walruses have some similarities to both seals and sea lions. Like true seals, walruses don’t have visible ear flaps. But, like eared seals, walruses can walk on their flippers by rotating their hind flippers under their body.

【1】According to the passage, which of the following statements about pinnipeds is true?

    A.Pinnipeds are good swimmers.

B.Pinnipeds are afraid of cold weather.

C.Pinnipeds are of the Phocidae family.

D.Seals and sea lions are pinnipeds, while walruses are not.

【2】One way to distinguish a sea lion and a true seal is that ________.

A.the sea lion cannot play ball

B.the true seal cannot hear well

C.the sea lion doesn’t have ear flaps

D.the true seal can’t walk with hind flippers

【3】Which of the following picture best illustrates a walrus?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 24、When people hear the news that David Bennett, recipient of the world’s first pig heart transplant, died on March 9, they might believe that the transplant was at fault. But in fact his transplant surgery represents a great step forward in medical history toward xenotransplantation (异种器官移植) success.

His death came just two months after the operation Jan 7. He was ineligible (不合格的) for the heart transplant list and xenotransplantation was, his only option. The fact that he was able to get two more months of life with the surgery proves its success.

Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for decades, as doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the transplant waiting list crisis. In the US alone over-100,000 patients are on the transplant list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart or lung or kidney. Therefore, medical science has looked to animal organs as a viable (可行的) alternative.

Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century but it has not been widely successful for two main reasons. First, it is incredibly difficult for even human-to-human transplants to be successful due to organ rejection. It is much harder with animal organs. Second, xenotransplantation has been highly restricted due to feat of virus transmissions from primates or pigs. In the late 1990s, some countries placed strict guidelines or outright bans on the use of animal tissue and organs for people.

Aside from Bennett’s gene-edited pig heart, late last year doctors New York University achieved some success in attaching pig kidneys to human blood vessels outside the body in patients on life support. Meanwhile, at the University of Alabama, doctors managed to actually implant (移植) gene-edited pig kidneys into a patient on life support.

Though these recent successes have been short-lived, they show that there may be a way to help more people with gene-edited organs from pigs.

【1】What do we know about the surgery?

A.It was one of the best choices for the patient.

B.It stands for the advances made in xenotransplantation.

C.It was the first successful xenotransplantation in history.

D.Without it, the patient would have lived two months longer.

【2】Why do scientists experiment with xenotransplantation?

A.To help patients recover from organ failure.

B.To find a practical alternative to human organs.

C.To make animal organs more useful to humans.

D.To ease the shortage of human organs for transplant.

【3】What may be the main concern about xenotransplantation?

    A.The risk of spreading diseases.

    B.The problem of public rejection.

C.The effects on other organs and tissues.

D.The damage to patients’ immune systems.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude toward the prospect of using pig organs for transplants?

    A.Positive.

    B.Worried.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Uncertain.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was August, the peak season for tourism. Olav Hylland, the owner of a local restaurant, was expecting as many as 500 tourists to visit and eat there. With a joyful heart, he jumped into a van, which he had just bought to transport cargo for his restaurant, and set off.

Leaving his home, he turned onto the main road with a tunnel 300 meters ahead. The 11.4 kilometer tunnel was the only way to access the local scenic spot, where his restaurant was located. Two years earlier a truck caught fire inside it and the tunnel's closure for repairs was a disastrous blow to Olav's business. The road to his restaurant was blocked and the stream of tourists halted. Although it was difficult, he managed to keep their staff on.

“And today will be a perfect day.” Olav thought.

Inside the tunnel everything went normal. But when he was near the end, Olav spotted an unusual light 50 meters ahead. Then he saw something burning.

Horrified, he stopped dead in his tracks. A tour bus was on fire! At the back where the engine was, dozens of tourists were stumbling towards him, getting away from the flames." They're going the wrong way." Olav thought, knowing the tunnel exit was just 500 meters ahead round a bend ahead of him. Then he realized the bus was now burning so fiercely that it was impossible for them to get around it.

As a former volunteer firefighter, Olav first had to raise the alarm. Grabbing his cell phone, he entered the codes with shaking hands. “A bus is on fire! Close the tunnel gates!” Both gates were shut to avoid the entry of more vehicles, but the thick smoke was pouring out of the bus in his direction under the influence of the strong wind. In no time it would black out the tunnel, choking and blinding anyone inside it.

There was no way the poor tourists could outrun the toxic fumes.

    Every minute counted.
