  • 26、   The Philippines, a tropical island nation in the Pacific, will now require by law all graduating students from elementary school to college plant 10 trees each before they can graduate.

The law was supported in the House and is now sent to the Philippines Senate for action, Supporters of the law see this as an opportunity for the Filipino youth to help deal with climate change and air pollution and build a greener environment for their generation.

“To this end, the educational system shall be a centre of spreading continuous use of natural resources among the young to make them socially-responsible citizens, The House bill stated, which was authored by representative Gary Alejano.

Alejano estimates that over the course of one generation the bill will be responsible for 525 billion trees planted. This comes from over 12 million students graduating from elementary school each year, 5 million from high school and 500,000 from college, equaling 175 million new trees planted each year.

The Philippines consists of 7,641 islands in Southeast Asia.Across those islands, deforestation has been a primary environmental issue.Agriculture has led to a significant drop in forested areas across the Philippines. Through the 20th century, forested area in the Philippines decreased from 70 percent to 20 percent. It is estimated that 24.2 million acres of forests were cut down from 1934 to 1988, primarily from logging.

The performance of this new law could set off a situation, by which the Philippines switches from net loss to net gain of trees, a simple and powerful message to the Filipino youth with the potential for long term positive influence.

1Why does the Philippines make the law to plant trees?

A.To create a better environment to live in.

B.To show the government is taking action.

C.To make sure students can graduate easily.

D.To raise people's awareness of education.

2What does Alejano think is important?

    A.Natural resources. B.The future generation

    C.Powerful messages. D.The educational system.

3How many trees will high school graduating students plant each year?

    A.5 million. B.50 million.

    C.120 million. D.175 million.

4What has caused a sharp drop in forests across the Philippines?

    A.A.loss of soil. B.Agriculture.

    C.Climate change. D.Air pollution.

  • 27、   China has long been tipped to be the next Silicon Valley, but now the finances and support are in place to make it happen.

There is a growing consensus (共识)that while Silicon Valley is not about to disappear any time soon, its next biggest rival is already on the verge of bursting onto the international scene — not in the US, nor in the EU, but in Asia. More specifically, China.

This is not just an observation based on the rise of companies like Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent. It is grounded in a more widespread move to fund start-ups in Asia to the point where more money is being invested there than in Europe. Just five years ago, Europe and Asia are neck and neck in terms of investment.

In 2013, Europe made slightly more deals. 1550 compared to Asia's 1071. but the total value of investment was S7bn. Just five years later, Asia is now four times the size of Europe with twice as many deals carried out. Between 2013 to 2018. the number of deals in Asia increased nearly fivefold, and their value leapt to S81bn, compared to the S21 bn raised in Europe. The Asian figure also shows that the continent is closing the gap on the US which saw $105bn worth of deals.

One of the main reasons that makes the country so attractive is not just the huge growth in investment and high education standards, but also local and national governmental support benefiting tech companies.

In fact, one of the conclusions of a recent Fortune tech conference was that China's tech companies will soon be beating American companies on their home turf(地盘). One of the reasons is that investors believe US immigration policy is making it more difficult for the best talent around the world to find work there. Plus, Chinese companies are now able to start paying salaries that can keep pace with those on offer in Silicon Valley.

1 fence, when Ian Roger, Chief Digital Official at luxury group LVMH was asked where he thought the next Facebook or Google would come from, he suggested it would be a close call between Silicon Valley and China. The latter had the investment that is needed as well as a hard work culture of a six-day week. It also has a superb education system and a huge population.

As Silicon Valley appears to be heating up a little too hard for some people, China would appear to be warning up at just the right pace.

1What does the expression on the verge of in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.on the top of B.on the list of C.on the condition of D.on the point of

2Which of the following is NOT a reason why China attracts foreign investment in tech companies?

A.High education standards. B.Huge growth in investment.

C.Support from the government. D.Higher salaries than those in Silicon Valley.

3It can't be inferred from the passage that____________________.

A.the US immigration policy is strict but talent-friendly

B.Ian Roger believes the next Google might come from China

C.employees of Baidu might be accustomed to overwork

D.Chinese tech companies can provide highly competitive salaries now

4What is the passage mainly about?

A.The total value of investment in Asia is tour times that in Europe.

B.Finances, high education standards and support make it possible for China to become the next Silicon Valley.

C.Asia attracts worldwide best talents to tech companies.

D.American tech companies will soon be beaten by those in China.

  • 28、Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana, to be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco. The houses were made of wood. These cottages once housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil; now they hold Twitter engineers.

The cottages could be an example of the industry’ s odd love affair with “low technology,” a concept associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship (手艺) that exists long before the Internet era. Low technology is not virtual (虚拟的) —so, to take advantage of it, Internet companies have had to get creative. The rescued wood cottages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds, are an obvious example, but Twitter’s designs lie on the extreme end. Other companies are using a broader interpretation (阐释) of low technology that focuses on nature.

Amazon is building three glass spheres filled with trees, so that employees can “work and socialize in a more natural, park-like setting.” At Google’s office, an entire floor is carpeted in glass. Facebook’s second Menlo Park campus will have a rooftop park with a walking trail.

Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech companies over the years. “We have lost the connection to the maker in our lives, and our tech engineers are the ones who feel impoverished (贫乏的) , because they’re surrounded by the digital world,” he says. “They’re looking for a way to regain their individual identity, and we’ve found that introducing real crafts is one way to do that.”

This craft based theory is rooted in history, William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after the Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement defined itself against machines. “Without creative human occupation, people became disconnected from life,” Morris said.

Research has shown that natural environments can restore(恢复) our mental capacities. In Japan, patients are encouraged to “forest-bathe,” taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure.

These health benefits apply to the workplace as well. Rachel Kaplvin, a professor of environmental psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environment. Her research found that workers with access to nature at the office—even simple views of trees and flowers—felt their jobs were less stressful and more satisfying. If low-tech offices can potentially nourish the brains and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages.

1The writer mentions the two nineteenth-century cottages to show that ________.

    A. Twitter is having a hard time

    B. old cottages are in need of protection

    C. early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana

    D. Internet companies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology

2Low technology is regarded as something that _______.

    A. is related to nature   B. is out of date today

    C. consumes too much energy   D. exists in the virtual world

3The main idea of Paragraph 5 is that human beings ________.

    A. have destroyed many pre-industrial arts

    B. have a tradition of valuing arts and crafts

    C. can become intelligent by learning history

    D. can regain their individual identity by using machines

4The writer’s attitude to “low technology” can best be described as ________.

    A. positive   B. defensive   C. cautious   D. doubtful

5What might be the best title for the passage?

    A. Past Glories, Future Dreams

    B. The Virtual World, the Real Challenge

    C. High-tech Companies, Low-tech Offices

    D. The More Craftsmanship, the Less Creativity

  • 29、Earth is far more alive than we previously thought, according to “deep life” studies that reveal a rich ecosystem beneath our feet that is almost twice the size of all the world’s oceans. Despite extreme heat, no light and intense pressure, scientists estimate it has between 15 billion and 23 billion tonnes of microorganisms. “It’s like finding a whole new reservoir (储藏) of life on Earth,” said Karen Lloyd an associate professor at the University of Tennessee.

Results suggest 70 percent of Earth’s bacteria and archaea exist in the subsurface. One organism found 2.5 kilometers below the surface has been buried for millions of years and may not rely at all on energy from the sun. Also, the methanogen (产甲烷菌) has found a way to create methane in this environment, which it may not use to reproduce or divide, but use to replace or repair broken parts. Lengths of their lives were completely different. Some microorganisms have been alive for thousands of years, barely moving except with shifts in earthquakes or eruptions. They’re just active inside, with less energy than people thought possible to support life.

The team consists of 1,200 scientists from 52 countries in disciplines ranging from geology and microbiology to chemistry and physics. A year before the conclusion of their study, they will present the findings before the American Geophysical Union’s annual meeting opens this week, which they say are made possible by technical advances on drills and microscopes.

The scientists have been wondering about the point beyond which life cannot exist, but the deeper they dig, the more life they find. There is a temperature maximum—currently 122℃—but they believe this record will be broken if they keep exploring and developing more advanced instruments.

Questions remain, including how the microbes interact with chemical processes, and what this might reveal about how life and Earth coevolved.

【1】What do the scientists find about the underground organisms?

A.They can t reproduce and divide.

    B.They’re the oldest living things.

C.Some of them consume no energy.

D.Some of them almost always keep still.

【2】What can we learn about the research from paragraph 3?

A.It lasts for around one year.

B.It involves efforts from multiple fields.

    C.It promotes technical development.

D.It is conducted in 52 countries.

【3】Why does the scientists drill deep?

    A.To break their previous record.

B.To find the depth limit of life.

    C.To discover more ancient microorganisms.

D.To detect the highest subsurface temperature.

【4】What is the purpose of writing the text?

A.Earth’s Depths Are Full of Life.

    B.Organisms Live Better Underground.

C.Earth Is Far Beyond Human Exploration.

D.Subsurface Life Differs from That on Land.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.
