26、If asked if space exploration should continue, most Americans would give an immediate response either in favor of continuing or in favor of ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on the research that has no merit.
Someone strange to the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money. Does the extreme cost of space exploration make sense?
One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) missions ( 任务), and goes to major companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry.
Another benefit to continuing space exploration is the many spinoff ( 衍生的) technologies it provides. The artificial heart resulted from experiments on the space shuttle. The handheld Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents originated from the system used to separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets. Insulation in homes that keeps them warm and energy efficient is based on the technology used to insulate the space shuttle.
There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as spinoff technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical procedures and the vehicles we drive. While it can be proven that billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it provides outweigh the terrible aspects. As a matter of fact, the money spent helps to improve the quality of our lives.

27、 In recent years there has been a steady attack on salt from the doctors; salt is bad for you-regardless of your health. Politicians also got aboard."There is a direct relationship" US Congressman Neal Smith said "between the amount of sodium (钠) a person consumes and heart disease circulatory(循环的)disorders stroke and even early death."
Frightening if true! But many doctors and medical researches are now beginning to feel the salt scare has gone too far."All these remarks and cry about salt is unnecessary" Dr. Dustan. insists. "For most of us it probably does not make much difference how much salt we eat." Dustan's most recent short-term study of 150 people showed that those with normal blood pressure experienced no change at all when placed on an extremely low-salt diet or later when salt was reintroduced. Of the hypertensive (高血压的) patients however half of those on the low-salt diet did experience a drop in blood pressure which returned to previous level when salt was reintroduced.
"An adequate to somewhat excessive (过度的)salt intake has probably saved many more lives than it has cost in the general population" said Dr. John H Laragh. "So an opinion that the whole population should avoid salt makes no sense."
Medical experts agree that everyone should practice reasonable “moderation” (节制)in salt consumption. For the average person a moderate amount might run from four to ten grams a day or roughly 1/ 2 to 1/3 teaspoons. One to two grams of salt would come from the natural sodium in food. The rest would be added in processing preparation or at the table.
"Na is not your enemy "says Comek’s Dr.Laragh. "Salt is the No.1 natural component of all human tissue and the idea that you do not need it is wrong. Unless your doctor has proven that you have a salt-related health problem,,there is no reason to give it up. "
【1】What did Neal Smith think of eating salt?
A.It was necessary.
B.It could lead to some diseases.
C.It was not related to heart disease.

B.A low-salt diet may be good for some people.
C.The reduction of salt consumption can cure a hypertensive patient.
D.The amount of salt consumption has nothing to do with one's blood pressure.
【3】What advice does Dr Laragh give in Para 3?
A.Experts should promote their study of salt.
B.Patients should eat adequate amounts of salt.
C.Doctors should not advise patients to avoid salt.
D.People should not be afraid of taking a bit excessive salt.
【4】What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text?

28、During my third year of university, I spent six months studying in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many are worried about travelling to Rio but I promise, it is worth a visit. Now I want to share my top recommendations (推荐) for experiencing Rio less as a tourist but more like a native Brazilian.
Pedra Bonita
Rio is full of hiking routes, and some Brazilians love to spend an afternoon hiking. My favorite route of all has to be Pedra Bonita. Pedra Bonita involves a steep climb of about an hour through tall trees, and I admit it is difficult in Rio’s heat, but you are rewarded at the top with a wonderful view of the city, standing high above the green landscape and blue sea below.
Mureta da Urca
One thing you are sure to find in Rio is an amazing sunset, but a lot of the best spots tend to be full of tourists. In my opinion, Mureta da Urca is the most relaxing place to watch the sun set over the silver sea, with the figure of Christ the Redeemer standing tall in the background.
Pedra do Sal
Pedra do Sal is a historical area in the city centre and on Monday nights it is brought to life by the sound of samba. Hundreds of people gather in the street, food and drink stalls are set up and it becomes a giant street party with everyone enjoying the happy sound of live samba!
Picanha
If there were one Brazilian food I could bring back to the UK, it would be picanha. It is the tastiest cut of steak I have ever tasted, served alongside rice and beans.
【1】The writer once went to Rio de Janeiro to ________.
A.stay there as a tourist for six months
B.study as a short-time international student
C.live as a native Brazilian
D.learn how to be a native Brazilian
【2】Which of the following is probably the favorite of body-builders?
A.Pedra Bonita.
B.Mureta da Urca.
C.Pedra do Sal.
D.Picanha.
【3】What can you enjoy in Pedra do Sal?
A.A wonderful view of the city.
B.An amazing sunset.
C.A giant street party.
D.A nice Brazilian food.
29、How do kids behave when there are no adults around?Donette Mabes from New Jersey says,"You never really know because you're not watching them all the time. "
Donette had always just thought her son was a troublemaker-until recently, when 13-year-old Gavin Mabes and some middle school friends arrived at a skate park. The park was empty except for little Carter Brunell, who was there with his mother celebrating his fifth birthday.
Carter is on the autism spectrum(自闭症). Big groups of older kids can make him nervous,so his mom,Kristen, was fully prepared to get him out of there. But she wasn't prepared for what happened next.
Gavin led the way and the others followed. The only surprise was that Gavin didn't start trouble. He started a friendship. "Gavin is just going around with Carter and making him feel special. And the rest of his friends then started singing Happy Birthday to him,"Kristen said,“That really blew me away, because I just saw the kindness in the world. And I wanted Carter to have a good birthday. ”
It was such a great birthday, and such a kind deed, even the local police department responded. They decided to hold a pizza party for them. But here's the best part: Since their first meeting, Gavin and his friends have continued to play with Carter.
As for the moms, this was the sweetest moment. Knowing your kid treats others kindly is better than seeing your kid treated kindly by others, even when you're not watching. "I was just so proud of him. He's good," Donette said.

32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “ I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “ it’s okay, just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walked onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forget the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “ Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward! ” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl. Don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you.” asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “it doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you. ”
