二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Teachers are conditioned to tolerate a lot of bad treatment—it’s a professional suffering—but what teachers at Sir G.E. Cartier Elementary School in London went through last spring seems beyond the call of duty: a few of them agreed to be tied to a rail in the gym while students hit them in the face with cream pies. Why on earth would they do that? To raise $3,000 – enough cash for an interactive whiteboard, the most desirable piece of educational technology on the market right now. These Internet-age boards are essentially giant computer touchscreens, and they are all the fashion in schools. But with little room for them in school budgets, many educators are doing whatever it takes to raise the money themselves. “We are a desperate breed, aren’t we?” says Sharon Zinn, one of three teachers who volunteered for Cartier Elementary’s whipped- cream-flavored activity.

At schools fortunate enough to have them, interactive-white boards are a blessing for educators struggling to attract a generation of students who got accustomed to using the Web from the early age. In the UK—where 70 percent of all primary and secondary classrooms have interactive whiteboards, compared with just 16 percent in the United States – students in those classrooms made the equivalent of five mouths’ additional progress in math. So far, the data on the efficacy (有效性)of touchscreens in US classrooms is inconclusive, but promising. Multiple recent studies suggest that the devices advance attendance rates and classroom participation. Ever since Dorchester School District 2 in Summerville installed 1,200 interactive boards in its classrooms, disciplinary incidents are cut down. “Students were bored” before the touchscreens arrived, says Superintendent Joe Pye.” Trips to the principal’s office are almost nonexistent now.”

But for some teachers, learning to use the device is not easy, and a generation gap has opened with teachers who are still used to writing lesson plans with a pen and paper. Many older educators are terrified by the boards, says Peter Kornicker, a media specialist in Harlem, where despite a student poverty rate of 98 percent, all 35 classrooms are equipped with touchscreens. ”As always, it comes back to the ability of teachers to master this technology,” says Andy Rotherham of Education Sector in Washington, D.C. “We have to train them to use it. Otherwise, it’s just another underused, expensive thing.”

1How does the author view the deed of some teachers at Sir G.E.Cartier Elementary School?

A.It is what most teachers are going through.

    B.It is something worth praise.

C.It is too much for most teachers to tolerate.

D.It is due to the conflict between teachers and students.

2Which of the following is true about the present generation of students?

A.They are heavily influenced by the Web.

B.They don’t respect teachers and observe disciplines.

C.They are bored with the way teachers teach.

D.They are only good at mathematics.

3What can we know about the situation in the US?

A.A high percentage of schools are using touchscreens.

B.The effectiveness of touchscreens has been proved.

C.Touchscreens promote attendance and classroom participation.

D.All teachers are receiving training to use touchscreens.

4What is the most important to make the touchscreens a success in classrooms?

A.To get enough financial budget to equip classrooms with touchscreens.

B.To give up the traditional way of writing lesson plans with a pan and paper.

C.To familiarize more students with the use of interactive touchscreens.

D.To train teachers to master and use the modern device.

  • 27、If Mars were the popular kid in school, Venus(金星)would be the unwelcome one sitting in the corner, largely ignored. Venus has nearly the same mass and size as Earth, but being closer to the sun, it gets nearly twice as much heat from the sun.

However, instead of having a climate that is just a warmer version of Earth’s, Venus’s surface and atmosphere are unbearable: clouds of sulphuric acid (硫酸) blanket the planet, while at ground level, it is hot enough to melt lead. Despite this, there is now a sign that Venus may harbour life.

Jane Greaves at Cardiff University, UK, and her colleagues recently detected phosphine (磷化氢)in Venus’s atmosphere, with one potential explanation that it is the by-product of biology. That is because the only way this gas is made on Earth is in laboratories or by microbes (微生物). Though this doesn't mean it was produced by life on Venus, attempts to find non-biological explanations for its presence have so far failed.

Our best way of confirming or rejecting the possibility of life on Venus is to go and have a proper look. While Mars has been the focus of interplanetary exploration efforts lately, the phosphine discovery lets people look at Venus in a new light. As NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: “It’s time to prioritize Venus.”

In the months and years to come, computer simulations will be used to further study the possible chemistries of the atmosphere on Venus. More laboratory experiments will be conducted to try to identify other ways the phosphine there could be produced. However, there is no guarantee that these efforts will reveal the true nature of this substance on Venus. A newly-proposed strategy is to directly sample the atmosphere and surface of Venus. By doing so, we would be able to take direct measurements of phosphine.

The discovery of phosphine in Venus's atmosphere is a great accomplishment. The scientific efforts may be just what we need to finally refocus on this neglected world. Possibly, the quiet kid in the corner may get the last laugh.

【1】Which description about Venus is not true?

A.It is almost as large as Earth.

B.It has nearly the same mass as Earth.

    C.It has a warmer Earth-like climate.

D.It has the unbearable surface and atmosphere.

【2】What can the discovery of phosphine on Venus indicate?

A.This kind of gas is very common.

B.There might exist signs of life.

C.Many products can be made with it.

    D.Experiments were once conducted there.

【3】What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A.The approaches to exploring phosphine.

    B.The importance of observations.

    C.The power of computer simulations.

    D.The necessity to analyse phosphine.

【4】Which can best describe the author’s attitude to the exploration of Venus?

    A.Casual.

    B.Cautious.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Doubtful.

  • 28、   Destine Whitaker was in fourth grade when she learned that millions of people around the world lack clean water.

“It was a problem that confused me for a long time,” said Whitaker, from the United States city of Philadelphia. “Water is a necessity.”

When she got to Carver High School of Engineering and Science, Whitaker carefully researched the problem and felt that she must do something about it.

Early in her senior year, Whitaker approached fellow members of the school’s National Honor Society with a proposal: They should raise money to buy water purification systems for people in need. Whitaker, the National Honor Society president, knew the systems would have to be easy to carry and able to operate without electricity. So she checked with a microbiologist to make sure the system she had her eye on would fit the bill.

Once her classmates agreed to back the proposal, Whitaker took it upon herself to raise money. She organized a game where students bought tickets to guess how many pieces of candy ajar contained.

In the end, they raised $800—a large amount for a school where 70 percent of the students’ families are not well-off.

Whitaker soon found that raising money was the easier part of the project. However, finding an organization that could deliver the water purification systems was the toughest one. She approached some organizations about their possible connections but no one could help.

Then Whitaker connected with Joseph Sackor, who runs the Liberia Medical Mission—an organization that provides medical care to Liberians who lack health services. Sackor accepted the school’s money and agreed to deliver the systems to people who needed them.

Whitaker dreams of someday starting her own nonprofit organization to bring clean water to more people in need.

“Some students in Liberia can’t even go to school because their parents cannot afford to buy them bottled water,” Sackor said. “This money is huge.”

1What problem did Whitaker want to solve?

A.Poverty of human beings. B.Lack of clean drinking water.

C.Shortage of medical care. D.Unawareness of healthy lifestyles.

2The underlined phrase “fit the bill” in Paragraph probably means “________”.

A.meet their needs B.be cheap enough

C.be difficult to operate D.need improvement

3What did Whitaker think the most difficult part of her project was?

A.Making a suggestion for the project.

B.Raising money to buy the equipment.

C.Calling on her classmates to give support to it.

D.Finding an organization to deliver the equipment.

4What does Whitaker want to do in the future?

A.Go to live and work in Liberia.

B.Study medicine to help those in need.

C.Set up a charity to help more people.

D.Provide bottled water to Liberian student.

  • 29、   Human beings can use language to communicate, but what about animals? How do they communicate with each other without using language? Well, different animals use different types of communication.

Sounds are one of the most common types of communication in animals. Bats usually follow sound waves to communicate. Birds communicate through their chirping(唧唧叫).Mammals generally use sounds to give calls to other members of their community and whales are good at using sound waves.

Besides sounds, facial expressions are also used by animals. For example, when dogs are angry, they show their teeth barking and raise their ears. When they’re frightened, they pull their ears behind with the mouth open. For another example, when the parent bird brings food for the baby bird, the “begging expression” can be observed on its face.

Next, gestures and body movements are also common in animals. For example, honey bees dance to communicate. A deer waves its tail to warn others of some danger coming closer. A gorilla sticks its tongue out to express anger.

Many animals communicate through smells. They give off pheromones (信息素)to express messages to other animals. Wolves, deer and insects generally use this type of communication. Even amoebas (变形虫)need to communicate and do it by giving out chemicals. The animals use this type of communication to attract others for giving birth to baby animals.

Besides the above means of communication, some animals communicate by touching each other. For example, monkeys express feelings by touching each other’s hands, and they even give hugs and kisses to express love.

1When a dog shows its teeth barking and raises itsears, it must be _________.

A.expressing its fear B.expressing its anger

C.begging its owner for something D.warning its owner of some danger

2Smells are used by animals mainly to _________.

A.produce their young B.drive their enemies away

C.show their different feelings D.ask for some food

3We can learn from the passage that _________.

A.a deer will waves its tail once it senses danger

B.most animals use their smells to attract others

C.bats are better at using sound waves than whales

D.a gorilla sticks its tongue out when it’s frightened

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Sounds are the most common type of communication in animals.

B.Human beings can use language to communicate, but animals can’t.

C.Animals can communicate with each other without using language.

D.Animals communicate with each other in different ways, such as sound, smell etc.
