26、When fashion designer Mindy Scheier’s middle child, Oliver, came home one day and told her he wanted to wear jeans to school rather than sweatpants (宽松运动裤), she was faced with difficulty. Oliver has a rare disease, which causes him to struggle with everyday tasks, such as dressing himself. Would she tell her 8-year-old son that he couldn’t wear what everyone else got to wear, or could she figure out a way in which he could? She chose the latter, altering (更改) a pair of jeans for him. And with that, the Runway of Dreams Foundation was born.
Scheier started the foundation in 2014 to make adaptive clothing more accessible and fashionable for people with disabilities. As part of its aims, Runway of Dreams Foundation partners with brands to make stylish adaptive clothing lines available to the disabled, creates scholarships for students focusing on adaptive clothing and helps with employment opportunities for people in the disability community.
“It is truly unbelievable how one pair of jeans has changed the world,” Scheier said. “Creating adaptive clothing for people with disabilities and trying to make change happen in the fashion industry felt so much bigger than just Oliver or just me. It felt like something that had to happen. The future of fashion is inclusion. We’ve been dressing different body shapes, and now it’s time to dress different abilities. I am so thrilled that Runway of Dreams Foundation really started a movement to make change happen.”
“They told my mother that I wasn’t going be able to do anything for myself, but I proved them wrong. What people like me can do with a disability is the same as someone who doesn’t have one. It might look a little bit different, or a little bit strange, but it can be done. I never opened up a magazine and saw someone that looked like me. So it’s good now for disabled young kids to see a model in an ad with a disability,” said Oliver.

【3】What can we learn from Oliver’s words?
A.He never reads magazines.
B.He feels ashamed of himself.
C.He dreams to become a model.
D.He appreciates adaptive clothing.
27、Sewing can be fun and creative. But have you ever thought that a sewing machine can also mean the world to many people around the globe that use it as their main source of income?
When Margaret Jankowski discovered this, she decided to found The Sewing Machine Project, an organization that collects donated used machines and redistributes them in remote places like Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Guam, and Kosovo. It also aims to help those in Detroit and New Orleans.
In 2004,when a tsunami (海啸) hit Sri Lanka, Margaret was deeply touched by the story of a particular woman. After the village she lived in was destroyed by the natural disaster, she lost everything, including her sewing machine, her approach to future earnings. This story made Margaret decide to collect used sewing machines and send them to Sri Lanka. After attending a local news program where she presented her idea, she started receiving scores of sewing machines.
The Sewing Machine Project covers a basic yet necessary need of many impoverished people around the world. For them, sewing can be a tool for survival. Whether in a factory or at home, a sewing machine can be the door to brighter financial opportunities. A sewing machine can also enable many to preserve their cultural identity. After Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005, a community of New Orleans that wears skillfully-made suits for their own traditional festival lost many of their sewing machines. Since then, the non-profit organization has distributed hundreds of machines among the creators of the costumes, helping them maintain their tradition as well as their income.

28、 A food additive (添加剂) is any substance that is added to food. Many people are put off by the idea of “chemicals in food.” The truth is that all food is made up of chemicals. Natural substances (物质)like milk, as well as man-made ones like drinks on sale in the market, can be described by chemical formulas. Some chemical substances are indeed harmful, but a person who refused to consume any chemicals would find nothing to eat.
The things we eat can be divided into natural and man-made substances. Some people feel that only natural foods are healthy and that all man-made ingredients are to be avoided. But many natural chemicals, found in plants and animals, are harmful when eaten, and some laboratory-made substances increase the nutritional value of food. Other chemicals have natural and man-made forms that are exactly alike: vitamin C is vitamin C, whether it comes from a test tube or from an orange. Like “chemical”, “man-made” doesn’t necessarily mean “not fit to eat”.
Food additives are used for many reasons. We add sugar and salt and other things to foods we prepare at home to make them taste better. Food producers have developed a range of additives that stabilize, thicken, harden, keep wet, keep firm, or improve the appearance of their products.
Additives can make food more convenient or nutritious, give it a longer shelf life, and make it more attractive to the consumer, thus increasing the sales and profits of the producers.
Food additives are presently the centre of a storm of serious argument. Food producers have been known to use additives that have not been proved safe; some substances in common use have been proved unsafe and have been taken off the market. Many people feel there’s a risk of eating food to which anything has been added. But food additives are now regulated by the FDA of the federal government, and new additives will go through strict testing before they can be placed on the market. For most people, the chances of developing serious side effects from the long-term use of presently approved (批准) food additives are very small.
【1】From the passage we can learn that ______ .
A. it is right to refuse chemicals in food
B. all foods have chemical substances
C. food additives are harmful to our health
D. natural foods are much safer than man-made ones
【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Foods without additives can keep a much longer shelf life.
B. Foods with more additives have higher nutritional value.
C. To ensure food safety, the FDA will stop food additives.
D. Food additives can improve the quality of foods in many ways.
【3】According to the writer, the food additive is ______ .
A. poisonous B. worrying C. avoidable D. acceptable
29、 What kinds of rooms are your favorite spots for studying? We are going to guess that they are probably not painted bright red or yellow. But maybe they should be. Imagine. You are suddenly asked to prepare for an exam. You have two rooms to choose from. One is a pale blue, and the other is a bright red. Which one do you settle into for study? Is one going to get your brain fired up for learning, or let you relax into the best state of concentration?
According to researchers at Curtin University in Australia, it might be best to camp out in the bright red room when you are looking to store information. It might sound strange, since we often think of pale rooms — soft blues or light greens — are relaxing. And they seem to be: The Curtin University study showed that pale colors made participants feel more relaxed and calm, while bright colors increased heart rate. But calming and relaxing, it turns out, may not always be the best environment for deep concentration or knowledge gaining. Reading comprehension was much better in the bright rooms than in the pale rooms. Although participants reported that they generally preferred the pale rooms to study in as an approach to relax into work, the researchers saw just the opposite — that the bright - colored rooms seemed to lead to greater concentration.
While this might seem only surprising, the findings get into a rather controversial (有争议的) area of psychological study. The Yerkes — Dodson Law says that a little bit of stress is good for achieving best performance, while too much stress negatively affects it. The higher heart rate and the reports of the bright colors creating a heavy atmosphere might just suggest that a little stress was good for the brain.
【1】What is the common idea mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.Pale colors appeal to all tastes.
B.Few people like bright red or yellow.
C.Light — colored rooms make you feel nervous.
D.Bright — colored rooms are not good for studying.
【2】What might directly affect the research results according to Para 2?
A.How participants react to colors. B.Participants’ preferences in colors.
C.What participants read in the rooms. D.Time participants spent in the rooms.
【3】What can be concluded from the study by Curtin University?
A.Higher stress leads to better performance.
B.Most people know how to make use of colors.
C.Stress is necessary when you want to concentrate.
D.Being relaxed is very important for people studying.
【4】What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Findings about people’s favourite room colors.
B.Room colors can affect one’s academic performance.
C.Bright — colored rooms can create a heavy atmosphere.
D.Light — colored rooms help people feel relaxed into work.
