二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Research shows that playful teasing between parents and their children can be a way to strengthen relationships, bring up difficult topics, and just have fun. 【1】 Carol Bishop says, “You need to recognize if they are enjoying it,” There are also rules about what is okay and not okay to tease your child about. 【2】 Instead, tease kids about safe topics, like a messy room, or things that can be easily changed.

Teasing should also be a two-way street. 【3】 If they go too far making fun of you, be sure not to blow up. Instead, help them to learn boundaries and what may hurt others.

Teasing about a disappointing grade should only be used as a gentle reminder to study or do homework. It shouldn't be focused on the ability because that could make the situation worse. It’s not wrong to say to your child, “I'm disappointed that you got a C.”【4】 You need to examine if there is a learning disability or maybe they are depressed or being bullied.

From monsters under the bed to darkness and noises, fears that may seem silly to an adult may be very real to a child. 【5】 In fact, it could make them worse. Teasing a child who is frightened about something is not a way for them to expand their horizon—you need to make them feel secure.

A.Kids often feel hurt when teased by others.

B.Topics like appearance and weight are prohibited.

C.You have to be willing to let your child tease you about things.

D.But then you must work with them to figure out the cause.

E.But parents need to recognize when teasing becomes hurtful.

F.Laughing or teasing won't help them overcome their fears.

G.Teasing a child about sports performance can cause a child to quit the sport.

  • 27、   When life tries to bring you down, just dance! That’s the message from Peng Xiaoying, 45, and her 49-year-old husband, Fan Deduo, in Zhejiang province. • 28、I remember her words, almost as if they were spoken yesterday.

Mrs.Mabel Price, our high school teacher in that little town of Westminster,in Western Maryland, said,

“You belong in college, and I’m going to do everything I can to get you there.” For me,college was something out of the question, something on a far distant planet, something only those people who had special rights did.I said,”I can’t go to college because I don’t have the money. There’s no way I could afford it.I’m going to join the army.”

Even though I was graduating at the top of my class in that small town, and enjoyed the experience of learning and thinking,I was used to a long tradition of experience in my family. We were people of limited means, and three of my four older brothers had gone off to join the army.

“Being an army man is a perfectly respectable way of life,”she said,”but you have a gift that can make a difference in the world.I want you to continue your education.I think I can get you into Johns Hopkins University. And I’m working on the money.”Finally,I was off to college.

One day I was walking from the parking lot to my first class, talking with my friend and classmate, and we passed by a group of men who were digging a deep ditch(沟渠)Suddenly,I knew why I was in college. She was right-I had been given a gift that could take me to wonderful places.I decided then and there that I preferred to make my living with my brain rather than my back.I had been given a choice they didn’t have:an education.

Some years ago,as I reflected on the experience for many times,it occurred to me:”Maybe I could locate Mrs.Price.Maybe she’s still living in Westminster.I could go back there and visit her, bring her a gift, and really let her know how much I’m thankful for what she had done for me.”

So,I began to search online for information about where she might be.I soon discovered an article about her death, published in the Baltimore Sun and dated October 8,2001.

I suppose the lesson for me in this story-or one of the lessons-is this:If you love someone;if you thank them;if you’re grateful to them-tell them now.One day it will be too late.

    Well...anyway...Mrs.Price,wherever you are-thank you.

  • 29、   Working on a farm and taking care of crops can be hot, time-consuming and difficult. Engineers have long wanted to build robots to lighten the load. But it has proved a difficult task. Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step on the easily damaged plants heavily. And they have to stop working when rain turns fields muddy.  “Tarzan”, however, could deal with some of those challenges.

Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When it comes to a farm environment, he realized robots would face many problems. “Many robots tend to get twisted(弯曲的) together or get stuck,”he says. What's more, he notes, "It's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human helping them.”

What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers says, “The sloths(树懒)move from tree branch to tree branch to avoid having to walk around the forest floor. "Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand to hand along wires hung above the field. He named their invention Tarzan after the jungle-swinging character in a movie.

Tarzan is not the first swinging robot. Mark Spong, a robotics researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas notes that some teams have built robots that do gymnastics or copy mammals. But he says he admires Tarzan for its using swinging movement to save energy and the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.

Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors (传感器) and cameras. But he also said future robots might take water to a particularly thirsty plant or fertilize one that needs nutritional support. And adding a third “hand”could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Finally the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.

1What worried the engineers when they built the farm robots?

A.They took up too much space.

B.They made the farming process slow.

C.They had difficulty exploring in fields.

D.They caused certain damage to crops.

2What does Jonathan Rogers think about most farm robots?

A.They take much time to make.

B.They get out of date more easily.

C.They depend too much on people.

D.They get used to the environment slowly.

3What attracts Mark Spong most about Tarzan?

A.Its strong wings. B.Its low cost

C.Its creative design D.Its powerful engine.

4How did Jonathan Rogers feel about Tarzan’s future?

    A.It could be found everywhere.

B.It could be put into more practical uses.

C.It could be used to do all the farm work.

D.It could be popular with working people in cities.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们).

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third.
