二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism (批评) of life”, and “a heightening of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its basic nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

1It is suggested that a poem should ______ to get it better understood.

A.be discussed it with others B.be analyzed by oneself

C.be copied down in a notebook D.be read aloud a few times

    2Poetry doesn’t have the function of ______.

    A.exploring your true feeling.

    B.rethinking about your life.

C.saving some time for your life.

    D.lifting up your life.

3According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English Poetry is _______.

A.to get students to understand life

B.to get students to enjoy poetry

C.to have students who love poetry.

D.to keep poetry occupying its present place.

4The underlined phrase “make room” in the last paragraph could be best replaced by “ ______”.

    A.arrange a room B.provide a place

C.spare enough space D.set aside enough time

  • 27、Time Travel

If you could travel in time, where would you go?Perhaps you would watch a performance of a Shakespeare's play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period?Or maybe you'd voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.

The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing.Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years.Perhaps the best known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H.G.Wells and published in 1895 for the first time.It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name,as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term"time machine",coined by Wells,is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.

But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes,in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called"wormholes",which could be used as shortcuts to other periods.Einstein's theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship-going at nearly the speed of light.Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.

Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the"grandfather paradox".It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born.If the time traveler wasn't born, how would he travel back in time?

And would you really like to visit the future? In H.G.Wells' book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(触角)。

If that's what's in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.

【1】The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show______.

A.the long history of time travel

D.There are films, comic books and dramas adapted from the novel The Time Machine.

A.have similarities because both are based on experiments

D.the grandfather's death makes the traveler's birth impossible

  • 28、Some Festivals Around the World

    Dia de los Muertos(Mexico)

Beginning at the midnight of October 31 and lasting through November 2, it is a festival when families gather together to remember those loved ones who have died. To honor the deceased, Mexican families prepare private altars (祭坛) in their homes. On top of them they’ll put photos of the dead and their favorite food. They also visit the graves of their beloved ones and place offerings there to pay their respects to the dead.

    Holi(India)

Holi, popularly known as “the festival of colors”, is an ancient Hindu festival which signifies the end of winter and the victory of good over evil.

    La Tomatina(Spain)

As a big food fight, it is possibly the most chaotic (混乱的) festival.

According to records, the festival dates back to a parade in which some naughty teenagers knocked one performer off his stilts (高跷) and caused a fight of throwing vegetables accidentally. It was once banned until 1957 when the locals held a protest (抗议)with a mock funeral. They carried a coffin containing a huge tomato as bands played a funeral march. Finally, in the decades since, La Tomatina has become a popular event which attracts lots of tourists to have fun.
