二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Space is the final frontier (前沿). Sending rockets into space has become almost common. The demand for communications satellites and space-based image services is growing.

Today, space efforts cost about $200 billion a year. Joint efforts between governments and businesses are helping to lower costs and increase our understanding of the universe.

The business of space looks good for Orbital ATK, a company based in the United States. In January, the company launched its Antares rocket. The rocket was carrying the first of eight planned supply shipments to the International Space Station. Orbital ATK is one of the two American companies paid by NASA to transport supplies to the space station.

A company called Arianespace is a private European space business. Clayton Nowry heads the American division of the company. He says the increase in rocket launches is partly the result of increased demand for space-based technologies. These include high-definition (高清的) broadcasts and satellite broadband services.

While there is more demand for satellites, the end of NASA's Space Shuttle program in 2011 has hurt the space industry. Janice Starzyk works at International Launch Services. She works on education issues at the Washington Space Business Roundtable. She said, "It's a pity that the program's shutdown was a huge, huge set of lay-offs (下岗人员) in the industry."

But even as NASA reduces its spending, other countries have announced plans to explore space. In December 2013, China became just the third country to land an unmanned space vehicle on the moon. A month later, India sent its first communications satellite.

1What makes sending rockets into space become very usual?

A.More and more people wanting to explore space.

B.Space becoming human's final home and dream.

C.Companies making every effort to earn $ 200 billion a year.

D.Increasing need for communications satellites and space-based image services.

2Why are governments and businesses working together?

A.To earn more money from space projects.

B.To send more rockets into space and use them.

C.To produce more communications satellites for the public.

D.To keep costs down and help us learn more about the universe.

3What do we know about Orbital ATK?

A.It's a private European space business.

B.It sent its Antares rocket in January.

C.It's a company based in the United Kingdom.

D.It's the only American company paid by NASA.

4How may Janice Starzyk feel about the program's shutdown?

    A.Hopeful. B.Content.

    C.Regretful. D.Uninterested.

  • 27、How do young people learn best? This is something I think about a lot when teaching foreign languages to young people. I often find that traditional teaching methods are neither always effective nor interesting for young bruins to learn a foreign language.

After moving to southern Italy I was lucky to have had the chance to run a private course teaching English to under 7-year-olds. I was aware that children liked to sing and enjoyed games so I wanted to use these tools to help my students develop English conversation skills. I found some fun and easy songs online, which they loved. I also found the English versions of some nursery rhymes they recognized. All of them were very interesting and helpful but students could still not have a basic conversation in English.

I knew I wanted these guys to he fully immersed in the language I was teaching and I also wonted them to speak it. I was keen to give 90% of my lessons in English but I knew it’d be difficult to get them to speak in a foreign language they have little or zero exposure to outside our lessons, so I had to come up with a simple yet effective plan.

One day I decided to prepare a simple dialogue in English, so that I could get them to sing and chant (有节奏地反复地唱) it, rather than simply getting students to repeat the phrases. I discovered that chanting some conversational sentences was the way to get students to speak in English — it worked!

So when teaching English to young people now, I encourage them to make up their own songs and chants to help them remember expressions or complex sentences.

【1】What is the passage mainly talking about?

A.How to make young learners like a foreign language.

B.How to teach foreign languages to young people.

A.He found it impossible to teach children with little English.

B.He tried to be a patient and responsible teacher.

C.He realized he was unable to finish the task of teaching.

D.He actually kind of discouraged and disappointed.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Mistakes are an important part of education.

B.A teacher can never tell where his influence stops.

  • 29、   If you grow up in America, you must know this little foodie(美食家) poem, You scream! I scream! We all scream for ice cream! For most Americans, the phrase ice cream brings out memories of summer. Ice cream is the oldest fashioned treat, and it has an ancient history.

The emperors of the Tang Dynasty are believed to have been the first to eat a frozen milk-like dessert, which was made with milk that was heated with flour. Later, camphor(樟脑) was added to improve the taste.

In Medieval Times, Arabs enjoyed an icy drink called sherbet(冰冻果子露). This cold drink often went with fruits. Over time, the drink became popular with the European upper class. Italians are said to have learned this drink-making skill, with the French following soon after.

The 17th  century saw ice drinks made into frozen desserts. With sugar added, sorbet(雪酪) was created. Antonio Latini is the first person to create a milk-based sorbet, which is considered as the first official ice cream.

It is impossible to say how exactly ice cream reached America, but it probably arrived with European settlers in the early 1700s. In 1790, the first ice cream store opened in New York. During the summer of the same year, our first president, George Washington, is said to have spent $200 to satisfy his thirst for the lovely treat. The Lincolns had a taste for ice cream. Abraham Lincolns wife Mary Todd often hosted strawberry parties for friends. Fresh strawberries were served with cake and ice cream.

Ice cream has become one of the most popular desserts in America. Apple pie might be the most traditionally American dessert, but what is served as its most popular close friend? Vanilla (香草) ice cream, of course! This creamy iced treat has strongly planted itself in the hearts of foodies across America.
