二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Language experts say that spoken English was almost the same in the American colonies and Britain two hundred years ago. Americans began to change the sound of their speech after the Revolutionary War in1776. They wanted to make it different to separate themselves from the British in language, in the same way they separated themselves from the British government.

Some American leaders proposed(建议) major changes in the language. Benjamin Franklin wanted a whole new system of spelling. His reforms(改革) were not accepted. But his ideas did influence others. One was Noah Webster.

Webster wrote language books for schools. He believed the United States should have a system of its own language as well as government. Webster published a dictionary of the American language in 1828. It established rules for speaking and spelling the words used in American English.

Webster wrote that all words should be said in the order of the letters that spell them. This is why Americans use the letters “e-r” to end many words instead of the British “r-e.” He spelled the word “center,” for example, “c-e-n-t-e-r,” instead of the British “c-e-n-t-r-e.”

Webster’s rule for saying every part of a word made American English easier for foreign settlers to learn. They learned to say “waist-coat,” for example, the way it is spelled instead of the British “wes-kit.”

The different languages of many people who came to the United States also helped make American and British English different. Many of their foreign words and expressions became part of English As Americans speak them.

Sometimes Americans and British people do not understand each other because of different word meanings. For example, the word “jumper” in Britain means a sweater. In the United States, it is a dress. The British word “brolly” is an “umbrella” in America. And the British call potato chips “crisps”. All of these differences led British writer George Bernard Shaw to joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by the same language!

【1】What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to?

A.Separating themselves from the British in language.

    B.Written English in America.

    C.Spoken English in America.

    D.Spoken English in Britain.

【2】Why did American want their language to differ from British English?

A.Because they found British English hard to speak.

B.Because they found British English hard to spell.

C.Because they wanted to have their own language and government.

D.Because foreign settlers wanted them to change their language.

【3】Why do Americans use the word “meter” instead of the word “metre”?

A.Because Benjamin Franklin didn’t like the word “metre”.

B.Because the word “meter” was absorbed from other languages.

C.Because Webster thought the word should be said in order of the letters that are spelt.

D.Because Webster thought American English should be made easier for foreign settlers to learn.

【4】Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons why English began to change in America?

    A.The government leaders.

    B.Noah Webster.

    C.Immigration to America.

D.The difficulty Americans had in understanding the British.

  • 28、Secrets of Top Students

A professor of education who has made some studies of top students said that top grades do not always go to the brightest students. 1

Top students master a few basic rules that others can also learn. Top students study anywhere or everywhere. A top student who is also a top athlete recites biology terms as he works out every day. Another student learns a new word every morming while brushing his teeth. Top students are also well organized. Top students immediately put the day’s notes in different folder s(文件夹). 2 According to one professor, the student who turns in neat work is already on the way to scoring an A. In the classroom, it is equally important for students to speak up and ask question. 3 As a student puts it, “Better grades come from better understanding.” Another technique is to do more than the homework. A student says that if her teacher gives five problems, she will undertake ten. In the student’s words, “Part of learning is practising. The more you practise, the more you learn.”

4 It showed that students who discussed homework and problems together, tried different approaches and explained their solutions to one another scored higher than those on their own.

Last but not least, all experts and top students agree that the most important “secret” lies in the contribution by parents. They set high standards for their children and hold them to those standards. 5 They impress the lessons of responsibility on their children, and the children deliver.

    A. They are taught the importance of learning by their parents.

    B. In other words, study time is always placed above fun.

    C. The value of studying together was shown in an experiment.

    D. In this way, they are available for review when nearing examination time.

    E. This is perhaps the best way for a student to clarify any doubts.

    F. They encourage their children in their studies but do not do the work for them.

    G. According to him, top students know how to make the most of their abilities.

  • 29、Travelers to the Arctic islands of Svalbard would find a rough, ice-hardened land, sheltering polar bears in its frozen landscapes. This group of Norwegian islands is the land of the “midnight sun” with almost 24 hours of sunlight during the winter months. It is also home to one of the most important storage facilities in world farming — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

The seed vault was opened in 2008 in an effort to safeguard the world’s food supply for future generations. Svalbard is the perfect frozen environment to house seed samples, set inside an Arctic mountain at 130 meters above sea level, so it is unlikely to be flooded. Low humidity , geological stability, and the surrounding permafrost can keep seed-keeping places cool, dry, and usable for centuries.

Seed gene banks from around the world have sent food crops seeds for safety in case a natural disaster or environmental damage destroys existing supplies. Worldwide there are more than 1.700 seed gene banks that store seeds locally and many choose to send back-up samples to facilities like the Svalbard’s vault.

There is space in the global vault for 4.5 million different crop varieties with each variety storing on average 500 seeds, meaning it can house 2.5 billon seeds. There are around one million seed samples from 80 institutes in the vault at present so there is a lot of spare capacity for the vegetables, grains, peas and beans that are banked annually. On the top of that, there are rare flowers from the Myanmar rain forests.

The largest numbers of samples in the vault are varieties of rice and wheat. The seed vault has been listed as one of the most influential projects of the past 50 years for its efforts. Seeds themselves are not kept for farmers or gardeners to grow produce. Their true value is as a genetic resource in plant upbringing to create new crop varieties.

【1】What makes Svalbard a global seed vault?

    A.Its eco-friendly tourism.

    B.Its rich supplies of food.

    C.Its favorable environment.

    D.Its strong sunlight in winter.

【2】Why do many seed gene banks send food crop seeds to the Svalbard’s vault?

A.To protect them from climate changes.

B.To exchange them for new crop seeds.

C.To make sure of the safety of food supplies.

D.To compare them with new crop varieties.

【3】What can be inferred about the Svalbard’s vault from Paragraph 4?

A.It values plant different types of plant.

B.It has little space for newcomers.

C.It is costly for most institutes.

D.It sees a big increase in seed samples every year.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To explain how to store seeds safely.

B.To introduce an influential seed vault.

C.To seek sponsors for world seed vaults.

D.To call on seed institutes to work together.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

“Life of Pi” is narrated by an older Pi and takes place in the present as he tells his life story to a writer. Pi begins with how he got his name and how his family owned a zoo, but eventually leads into his family needing to leave India for financial 1. The heart of the story lies in Pi as a young man and the time he spent out at sea on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but getting to that point is quite an ordeal(苦难考验). Pi loses everything and everyone close to him in the blink of an eye and he doesn’t 2 on making what feels like an unbreakable bond with a Bengal tiger.

The 3 film offers a rather marvelous message about religion as Pi discusses the experimentation with several different religions as a young boy. Even though it seems kind of silly that a boy has 4 so many religions at one point in his life, it portrays a/an 5 message in a light that doesn’t seem too preachy(说教的). But the religious aspect is really only a backdrop for being on your own 6 to finding who you really are. Feeling so alone for so long and having Pi talk about not being alone and not getting to say goodbye to those he cared about most is one of those things that just hits you really hard.

While witnessing Pi attempt to tame Richard Parker is really 7, there are so many unbelievable sights to witness in “Life of Pi”. There’s the whale, the jellyfish, the flying fish, that 8 storm, and that seaweed island with all of the meerkats (a kind of monkey). “Life of Pi” never really lets up on being 9 breathtaking and amazing from beginning to end.

“Life of Pi” is pleasantly satisfying. With a heartfelt message, beautiful visuals, and stunning camera work. “Life of Pi” is truly a sight to behold and illustrates how 10 3D can be to a film that isn’t just a summer hit or blockbuster.
