二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Most of the thousands of tourists who visit Pompeii every year leave with nothing more than amazing memories. But there are some who take away a little extra – the relics themselves.

However, it seems that those visitors who have slipped a piece of the world’s most important archaeological(考古的) site into their pockets have come to regret their actions.

Tourists who took relics from the ruined Roman city have been returning them to the site, saying they are cursed (诅咒).

One man wrote from Latin America saying that he and his entire family had experienced “trauma after trauma” after he took a piece of stone from Pompeii.

Massimo Osanna, a senior official at Pompeii, said he had received up to a hundred packages from across the world in recent years containing items from the site, often accompanied by letters explaining the relics had brought them bad luck.

The “curse of Pompeii” is an old story that says the eruption(火山爆发) of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, which buried Pompeii, was punishment from the gods after troops ruined the buildings where people showed respect to the gods.

“At a certain point, people started believing in this story again,” said Mr. Osanna. “Even proper thieves have returned things to us.”

In one case, five packages were sent to Pompeii containing stolen items, including a statue that had disappeared in 1987. The accompanying letter was sent from Spain and the writer explained the statue had brought a “curse on his entire family”.

However, some are affected by a strong feeling of dishonor in their heart, rather than an ancient curse. Mr. Osanna said that an English woman had recently returned around 10 mosaic tiles (镶嵌地砖) that her parents had taken while on holiday during the Seventies.

“When her mother died, she received these little pieces. But in the letter she described them as ‘uncomfortable’ and said she wanted to give them back,” he said.

Mr. Osanna is considering setting up an exhibition of all the letters he has received, calling it “What I brought back from Pompeii”.

1Why did some visitors who took relics away regret?

A.Because there was nothing but amazing memories.

B.Because they took away the relics themselves.

C.Because they thought the stolen relics brought them bad luck.

D.Because they received letters from a senior official at Pompeii.

2The underlined word “trauma” probably means “________”.

    A.an unpleasant and upsetting experience

B.an old object or custom that reminds people of the past

C.a building where people respect gods

D.the things that a person or animal does

3According to the old story, the gods were angry because________.

    A.some people cursed them

B.the city of  Pompeii was buried

C.some soldiers didn’t show them enough respect

D.too many buildings for people were ruined

4Before returning the mosaic tiles, the English woman must have felt _______.

    A.ashamed B.scared

    C.proud D.unconcerned

  • 27、   As a people-pleaser, you care about pleasing other people so much because you want to be liked and don't want other people to think ill of you. It's a bad, never ending way of life, because people are always going to ask things of you.

Here's how you can stop being such a people-pleaser:

    Wait!

Next time someone texts or emails a request, wait to reply. Wait up to 24 hours if you can! Show people how to treat us. And train them on what to expect from us.

    Provide a choice

For those who want to say no in a gentle way, instead of giving an excuse, you can provide a choice. It's more useful too! Something like," I'd love to help you pick out a new sofa but not this weekend. Lucy has an excellent eye for sofas." is much more helpful.

    Realize you have a choice

More times than you think, you can say no. Stop for a second when a choice comes up that feels uncomfortable. Then decide if, finally, a yes or no feels like freedom--and choose that.

    K(no)w it gets easier

Saying no needs practice. The more you do it, the more used to it you become and the less people expect from you. Once you say you are unavailable a few times, people stop asking so much from you.

    Recognize you can't please everybody

Other people will always control our lives if we let them. You can't please everyone. And a rich, wonderful life has lots of those "yes" moments--as well as plenty of loving "nos".

【1】The passage is written for the people ________.

    A.who like satisfying everyone

    B.who always make requests

    C.who need to buy sofas

    D.who want more freedom

【2】What are you advised to do when someone makes a request through email?

    A.Pretend not to see it.

    B.Give an immediate answer.

    C.Teach him a good lesson.

    D.Avoid giving a quick reply.

【3】Giving someone a choice can make saying no ________.

    A.less helpful

    B.more important

    C.less believable

    D.more acceptable

【4】What will people do if you say no a few times?

    A.Lose touch with you.

    B.Leave you immediately.

    C.Stop asking you so much.

    D.Consider you to be impolite.

【5】How many suggestions does the author give us?

    A.3.

    B.4.

    C.5.

    D.6.

  • 29、   Earlier research had suggested we're best at learning grammar in early childhood. Then we hit a dead end around age 5. It's supposed to be much harder for older kids. The time when people can learn the rules and structure of a language well appears to last until around age 17 or 18. “But that's not so, ”says psychologist(心理学家)Joshua Hartshorne.

Hartshorne asked friends to take an online English grammar test. After completing the test, volunteers answered questions about where they had lived,  the languages they had spoken from birth and the age at which they first started learning English. Hartshorne also asked how long they had lived in an English-speaking country. As he had hoped, people shared the test widely online. This let Hartshorne's group study the answers from 669, 498 native and non-native speakers of English. The researchers used statistics to find out when people with different English-speaking experiences reached their top grammar ability.

If people moved to a new country and began speaking English by age 10 to 12, they finally spoke it as well as folks who had learned both English and another language from birth. But both groups scored a little worse than people who spoke English only, the researchers found. The test results showed that around age 17, people's ability to learn grammar took a sharp drop. And those who started learning English after age 10 or 12 never reached the same level of English skillfulness as people who started younger. WhyThe researchers think it's because they had fewer years to practice before their skills dropped off at surpriseLanguage learning did not end at 17. People's English skills kept improving a little until around age 30, the new study found. And this was true among both native speakers and those who learned English as a second language. Still, most language learning happened by age 20, the new study decided.

1What age period is best for grammar learning according to earlier research

    A.From 17 to 20. B.From 5 to 12.

    C.Before age 5. D.From 20 to 30.

2How did Hartshorne get his study statistics

A.By experimenting in the lab. B.By making an online survey.

C.By studying historical records. D.By collecting earlier study results.

3Which of the following agrees with Hartshorne's study results

    A.Language learning needs much practice.

B.Language learning ends at the age of 17.

C.The more languages you learn, the better.

D.It is best to learn language after 20 years old.

4What is the best title for the text

    A.How native speakers learn English

B.What's the best age to learn a language

C.What's the best way to learn a foreign language

D.Why non-native speakers can never master a second language

  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

“Life of Pi” is narrated by an older Pi and takes place in the present as he tells his life story to a writer. Pi begins with how he got his name and how his family owned a zoo, but eventually leads into his family needing to leave India for financial 1. The heart of the story lies in Pi as a young man and the time he spent out at sea on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but getting to that point is quite an ordeal(苦难考验). Pi loses everything and everyone close to him in the blink of an eye and he doesn’t 2 on making what feels like an unbreakable bond with a Bengal tiger.

The 3 film offers a rather marvelous message about religion as Pi discusses the experimentation with several different religions as a young boy. Even though it seems kind of silly that a boy has 4 so many religions at one point in his life, it portrays a/an 5 message in a light that doesn’t seem too preachy(说教的). But the religious aspect is really only a backdrop for being on your own 6 to finding who you really are. Feeling so alone for so long and having Pi talk about not being alone and not getting to say goodbye to those he cared about most is one of those things that just hits you really hard.

While witnessing Pi attempt to tame Richard Parker is really 7, there are so many unbelievable sights to witness in “Life of Pi”. There’s the whale, the jellyfish, the flying fish, that 8 storm, and that seaweed island with all of the meerkats (a kind of monkey). “Life of Pi” never really lets up on being 9 breathtaking and amazing from beginning to end.

“Life of Pi” is pleasantly satisfying. With a heartfelt message, beautiful visuals, and stunning camera work. “Life of Pi” is truly a sight to behold and illustrates how 10 3D can be to a film that isn’t just a summer hit or blockbuster.
