二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Until now, much of the effort in search for life on the other planets has been on finding liquid water, because most of the extremely important chemical reactions that happen in plants and animals can only take place in the presence of water. And water is very common. In fact, the elements (元素) that make water (hydrogen and oxygen) are the first and third richest chemicals in the universe. This means that we can find water almost everywhere we look, from the surface of planets in our Solar System to the depths of space.

But for life as we know it to exist, it needs a planet where water exists in a liquid state, or its cells (细胞) would freeze or boil away. Earth is the only known planet that stays in a perfect position from our Sun to support water in a liquid state. Astronomers call this perfect distance from a star the “habitable (宜居的)” or “Goldilocks zone”.

Scientists last year discovered that there is liquid water on the Mars, which made a lot of people very excited since finding a world within a star’s habitable zone where liquid water can exist would be a great start to finding life.

Water is also found on the Mercury, and there are vast water oceans on some of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s moons. But we still haven’t found life on the Mars, or any other planet in our Solar System.

Therefore, finding liquid water isn’t enough. We still need to be able to detect other conditions that support life forms (scientists call them “biosignatures”). For example, we have to look into a planet’s atmosphere and see what gasses are in it. If we find a planet with lots of oxygen, we have one more evidence to support the idea that there may be life there. Unfortunately, at the moment, it is not possible for us to detect the biosignatures on Earth-like planets beyond Mars. We have not perfected the technology to do it yet.

1What can we know about the planets in the so-called “Goldilocks zone”?

A.They are very cold. B.They are extremely hot.

C.Life might be found on them. D.Water is not common there.

2Where have the scientists found liquid water?

A.On the Saturn. B.On the Mars.

C.On the Jupiter. D.On the Moon

3What does the author mean in the last paragraph?

A.There is no life form on the other planets.

B.It is impossible for us to detect the other biosignatures.

C.Liquid water is extremely important for plants and animals.

D.We still have a long way to go to find life beyond the Mars.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.The conditions for a livable planet.

B.The importance of liquid water to life.

C.The latest discovery about livable planets.

D.The exploration of life forms on the Mars.

  • 27、In the long history of about 5,000 years, numerous Chinese traditional festivals were celebrated in memory of gods or some significant days, some of which are passed down from generation to generation and people always practice special traditional activities in each festival.

    Qingming Festival

Qingming Festival is on the 15th day after Spring Equinox, round April 4 or April 5 every year. 【1】 They remove the weeds growing on the ancestors’ tombs to make them clean, so this festival is also called Tomb-sweeping Festival. In some areas, people are forbidden to use fire to cook food, so they only eat cool food.

    Double Ninth Festival

【2】The Chinese character of September is the same as 9, so we get this special name. Chinese people, especially the north Chinese, climb the mountains to the peak to enjoy the wonderful scenery, and admire the beauty of chrysanthemum.

    Winter Solstice(冬至)

Winter Solstice is on around December 22 or 23 of solar calendar each year. From Winter Solstice on, the daytime will be longer and longer. 【3】 In the northern region, people eat dumplings and wonton(馄饨), while in the southern region rice balls.

    【4】

In China, this festival is in late January or early February, the last day of the Lunar year. People celebrate it by having a family reunion dinner, setting off fireworks and staying up late. Breaking the dishes and bowls is a thing all the people scare, but if you did it, you have to say: “sui sui ping an”. 【5】

    A.New Year’s Eve

    B.Spring Festival

C.People will go to worship their ancestors.

D.People always visit their friends and relatives.

E.That day people in different regions eat different food.

  • 28、   When it comes to giving help to developing countries, we often think about donating money so that these countries can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies. These seem to be the most important basic needs of the people we are trying to help. However, the traditional way is far from enough. We need better ideas to help them.

Recently, I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries. A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which can run without electricity. He decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia.

The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is a little different from the normal laptop computers you can buy in the shops. Covered in rubber, this computer is very strong and won’t be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle (把手) so that children can wind () the computer up to give it extra power when needed.

These special laptop computers will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to build as many as 15 million machines in the first year of production. The idea is that these computers will help the children’s education as they will be able to access the Internet.

These computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children’s education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.

Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again. In the UK, and probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year. The waste created by throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to recycle them. In this way we will be able to achieve two important goals at the same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others. In other words, we will be able to “kill two birds with one stone”, and that is always a good thing.

1Which of the following words can be best used to describe Nicholas Negroponte?

A.Determined and devoted. B.Independent and successful.

C.Responsible and selfless. D.Creative and caring.

2What can we infer from the passage?

A.The computer invented by Nicholas Negroponte runs without electricity.

B.Recycling old phones is a traditional way to help developing countries.

C.Improving education can help developing countries in the long run.

D.The UK creates most of the waste by throwing mobile phones.

3What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A.To introduce some new and better ways to help developing countries.

B.To call on people to help developing countries.

C.To talk about different ways to help developing countries.

D.To tell readers how to help developing countries.

  • 29、   Managing a popular tourist attraction can be kind of like throwing a party — everyone wants to come and have fun, but nobody wants to help clean up when it's over. But the Faroe Islands have come up with a creative way to take care of their home and welcome visitors at the same time.

An official notice on the islands' national tourism website reads "closed for maintenance (维护), open for voluntourism.”Following a successful plan this year, the country has made the decision to "close” its major tourism sights and attractions during the weekend of April 16-17, 2020. Hotels will be open, and flights will continue. That weekend, people all over the Faroe Islands will be working on environmental protection projects.

However, people who are just dying to visit the Faroe Islands during that weekend can sign on to help with the housekeeping. The islands are looking for 100 volunteers to come to the country to help with the caretaking efforts. There were thousands of applications for the 2019 plan, so would-be islanders better apply fast.

"For us, tourism is not all about numbers, " Director at Visit Faroe Islands told CNN Travel earlier this year." We welcome visitors to the islands each year, but we also have a responsibility to our community and to our beautiful environment, and our aim is to protect the islands, ensuring responsible growth." The first group of voluntourists included travelers from Mexico, Israel, Australia, China and the United States. The director said that because of the surprising popularity of the volunteering weekend in 2019, the Faroes will host the event yearly. According to the Faroes' tourism authority, visits to the country have increased by 10% over the past few years.

1Who can visit the Faroe Islands on April 16-17, 2020?

    A.Any tourists. B.Selected voluntourists.

    C.Housekeepers. D.All islanders.

2Why do the Faroes host the yearly event?

A.To protect and develop their home. B.To make more money in tourism.

C.To attract more foreign visitors. D.To please the tourists.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.All travelers have a chance to volunteer in 2020.

B.The Faroe Islands are likely to hold a party yearly.

C.The plan has made some difference in recent years.

D.Some tourism sights and attractions are closed for all.
