  • 26、Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.

Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.

One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.

The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.

Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression.

The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.

These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

【1】According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences the intelligence development in babies?

    A.The environment.

    B.Mother’s sensitivity.

    C.Their peers (同龄人).

    D.Education before birth.

【2】What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?

A.To prove that babies can learn before they are born.

B.To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.

C.To show mothers can strongly influence the intelligence development in their babies

D.To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills.

【3】Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?

A.The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.

B.The children of women who did not suffer from depression.

C.The children of depressed but caring mothers.

    D.Children with high communication abilities.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.

B.Scientific findings about how the environment has an effect on babies’ intelligence.

C.A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are born or six months old.

D.Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies.

【3】Many people set goals with their hobbies that provide them satisfaction when these goals have been achieved. These goals can be simple, like improving a golf score, writing a certain number of pages for a novel each day or seeing an entire collection of classic films.

Hobbies provide a sense of community when you meet other people who enjoy similar activities.【4】More populated cities typically have numerous clubs or groups for people to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about a particular hobby. Becoming a member of one of these organizations allows greater growth within your hobby, as well as a chance to make new friends.

Having a hobby can develop a talent that makes a person feel proud and satisfied. • 28、   Pangolins are the most trafficked(非法交易)mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly(有鳞片的), anteater-like animals, a new wildlife documentary, Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation: access. Partnering with the non-profit organization Pangolin. Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal’s habitats.

Over two yearsthe documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, “One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quite fussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant.”

Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.

Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitat, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protecting these unique creatures.

Filmed on location in South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic, and Gabon, this powerful documentary is the story of two men a mission to get all four species of African pangolin camera for the very first time.

1What’s the purpose of the documentary?

A.To study the situation of pangolins. B.To collect fund to protect pangolins.

C.To throw light on pangolin protection. D.To propose setting up pangolin reserves.

2What do we know about those filmmakers?

A.They once shot pangolins by mistake.

B.They have never filmed pangolins before.

C.They came across crash accidents occasionally.

D.They have a better knowledge of pangolins now.

3What is the meaning of the underlined word “fussy” in paragraph 2?

    A.Picky. B.Messy. C.Hungry. D.Heavy.

    4What’s the documentary mainly about?

    A.The illegal trade of pangolins.

B.The life of pangolins in their natural habitats.

C.The medical function of pangolin’s scales.

D.The efforts of Pangolin, Africa to save pangolins.

  • 29、   Before the 1830s, most newspapers were sold through annual subscriptions in America, usually $8 to $10 a year. Today $8 to $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspaper were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that.

The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper” — a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper, perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street.

This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible (but not easy) to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer’s office to purchases a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny — usually two or three cents was charged — and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase “penny paper” caught the public’s fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny.

This new trend of newspapers for “the man on the street” did not begin well. Some of the early ventures (企业) were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.

1Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s?

    A.Academic. B.Unattractive.

    C.Inexpensive D.Indifferent.

2What did street sales mean to newspapers?

A.They would be priced higher. B.They would disappear from cities.

C.They could have more readers. D.They could regain public trust.

3Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at?

    A.Local politicians. B.Common people.

    C.Young publishers. D.Rich businessmen.
