  • 21、UK is becoming a popular destination for people who wish to study abroad. However, Britain is quite an expensive place to study and live in. Tuition fees have now reached £ 9,250 a year and students also face some of the highest living costs in the world.

Fortunately, there are a number of countries where universities offer degree programs entirely in English, along with the chance to learn the local language while you live there. Here are three of the options.

    Tianjin University

Moving to China is not for the faint- hearted. Undergraduate degree courses at Tianjin last four years. Living costs are only around £ 400 a month and tuition fees are £ 2,300 a year. Flights will cost £ 3,600 over the four years. The total cost, at £ 28,800, is still around half that of a three-year degree in Britain. Tianjin is one of the world's latest cities and is only a half-hour train ride from Beijing. Three undergraduate programs are offered in English: Chemical Engineering, Environment & Energy and Pharmaceutical Science.

    University of Amsterdam

The Dutch capital is not a cheap city to live in, but standard tuition fees of £ 1,800 a year make it significantly cheaper than a British degree. There are 14 bachelor's degrees on offer that are taught in English, including Political Science, Economics & Business Economics and Actuarial Science. Nearly all Dutch people speak English, making it an easy country to get by in.

    University of Milan

The University of Milan's fees range from £ 140 to £3,650 a year. The one bachelor's degree offered entirely in English―Political Science is a three-year course. While living costs in Milan are high, the significantly lower fees make it a cheaper option than a British university.

1What is probably the total cost of a three-year degree in Britain?

    A. £ 14,400   B. £ 27,750

    C. £ 28,800   D. £ 57,600

2Where can you major in Political Science?

    A. London and Tianjin.

    B. Amsterdam and London.

    C. Amsterdam and Milan.

    D. Tianjin and Milan.

3What is the purpose of the text?

    A. To encourage people to study abroad.

    B. To introduce some affordable universities.

    C. To advertise some degree programs.

    D. To compare tuition fees and living cost

  • 22、A rapidly advancing contemporary science that is highly dependent on new tools is Earth system science. Earth system science involves observation and measurements on the Earth at all scales from the largest to the smallest. The huge amounts of data that are gathered come from many different locations and require special techniques for handling data. Important new tools that facilitate Earth system science include satellite remote sensing, small deep-sea submarines, and geographic information systems.

More than any other way of gathering evidence, satellite observations continually remind us that each part of the Earth interacts with and is dependent on all other parts.

Earth system science was born from the realization of that interdependence. Satellite remote sensing makes possible observations at large scales, and in many cases, measurements of factors that could not otherwise be measured. For example, the ozone hole over Antarctica--the decrease in the concentration of ozone high in the atmosphere--is measured by remote sensing, as are changes in deserts, forests, and farmlands around the world. Such measurements can be used in many areas of specialization besides Earth system science. Archaeology, for example, has benefited from satellite observations that reveal the traces of ancient trade routes across the Arabian Desert.

New tools for exploring previously inaccessible areas of the Earth have also added greatly to our knowledge of the Earth system. Small deep-sea submarines allow scientists to travel to the depths of the ocean. There they have discovered new species and ecosystems thriving near deep-sea vents that emit heat, sasses, and mineral-rich water.

Just as important as new methods of measurement and exploration are new ways to store and analyze data about the Earth system. Computer-based software programs known as geographic information systems, or GIS, allow a large number of data points to be stored along with their locations. These can be used to produce maps and to compare different sets of information gathered at different times. For example, satellite remote sensing images of a forest can be converted to represent stages in the forest's growth. Two such images, made at different times can be overlaid and compared, and the changes that have taken place can be represented in a new image.

【1】The word "facilitate" in Paragraph I is closest in meaning to ________.

    A. enable B. require   C. organize D. examine

【2】The author of the passage mentions that satellite observations are especially effective in ________.

    A. conducting scientific studies of life on the ocean floor

    B. predicting future climate changes

    C. providing data to determine Earth's age

    D. demonstrating interactions among all of Earth's parts

【3】According to the passage, satellite observations of the Arabian Desert allow archaeologists to know ________.

    A). indications of ancient routes

    B. evidence of former lakes

    C. traces of early farms

    D. remains of ancient forests

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. special techniques are needed to classify the huge amounts of data about Earth.

    B. New tools provide information about Earth that was once impossible to obtain.

    C. Advances in Earth system science have resolved many environmental problems.

    D. Satellite remote sensing can show changes between two images taken years apart.

  • 23、   Nearly three-quarters (73 percent)of US adults believe artificial intelligence will “eliminate more jobs than it creates,” according to a Gallup survey. But, the same survey found that less than a quarter (23 percent)of people were “worried” or “very worried” automation would affect them personally. Notably, these figures vary depending on education. For respondents with only a four-year college degree or less, 28 percent were worried about AI taking their job, for people with at least a bachelor degree, that figure was 15 percent.

Will AI destroy jobs or create them? No one really knows. On the surface, these answers suggest ignorance, or short-sightedness, but they also reflect a deep divide among experts on what exactly the effects of new technology will have on the workplace. Studies trying to estimate job losses caused by advances in robotics and AI vary wildly.

Historically, though, technology usually leads to a net gain in jobs, destroying some professions but creating new ones in the process. What’s different this time around, argue some economists and AI experts, is that machines are smarter than they were, and historical examples don’t offer a useful comparison.

Considering these contradictory predictions, it’s no wonder that most Americans think automation is someone else’s problem. This isn’t ignorance, either. Even in high-risk industries like truck driving, there’s only so much automation can do. A computer can drive on a highway, yes, but it can’t repair a truck, unload its goods, argue with unhelpful warehouse managers, or even refill the gas tank. Not yet anyway.

The findings from Gallup’s survey also show that the use of AI is already widespread in the US. Nearly 9 out of 10 Americans (85 percent) use at least one of six devices or services that use features of artificial intelligence. 84 percent of people use navigation (导航) apps like Waze, and 72 percent use streaming services like Netflix. 47 percent use digital assistants on their smartphones, and 22 percent use them on devices like Amazon’s Echo.

AI is something integrated into products and jobs bit by bit. You might not think that Netflix’s predictions of what you want to watch next count as artificial intelligence(or that they’re even intelligent at all),but they’re helped the service steal viewers from traditional TV and cable companies by shaping the creation of shows like House of Cards. Measuring this sort of impact in economic surveys is understandably hard.

Gallup’s survey helps illustrate AI is not some mysterious event that will change the world overnight at some point in the future. It’s something that is already happening. As Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of Gallup, told The New York Times: “Whether they know it or not, AI has moved into a big percent of Americans’ lives in one way or another already.”

1Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The more education one receives, the more worried he is about job losses.

B.The development of technology used to create more jobs than it eliminated.

C.Most Americans are afraid that AI is becoming a threat to their current jobs.

D.People ignore the divide among experts on the impact of AI on workplace.

2The underlined word “contradictory” is closest in meaning to ________.

    A.conflicting B.reasonable

    C.ridiculous D.objective

3Why is truck driving classified as a high-risk industry?

A.Because truck drivers are more likely to get into accidents.

B.Because truck drivers usually have to do a lot of manual labor.

C.Because computers can take the place of the drivers to drive.

D.Because trucks can be produced and repaired by computers.

4What can we learn from Gallup’s survey?

A.AI will lead to more unemployment in the future.

B.AI is gradually changing different aspects of our life.

C.The hidden impact of AI on job losses is meansurable.

D.All the TV viewers will turn to streaming services someday.

  • 24、Advertising in mass media is powerful. Right ads help create demands of products, campaign for political candidates or ideas and historically, even start wars. Detailed files the social media Companies build for each user, however, make advertising even more powerful by enabling advertisers to tailor their messages to individuals. These files even include your family size and whether you buy a lot of beer.

Consequently, social media has greater abilities to expose people to ideas as fast as they’ll individually accept them. The same ticks that can commend products to just the right person or suggest something addictive just when someone is most fragile can also suggest an extreme Conspiracy (阴谋) theory just when he is ready to consider it.

It’s increasingly common for friends and family to find themselves on opposite sides about important political issues. Many recognize social media as part of the problem, but how are these powerful customized advertising techniques contributing to the divisive landscape?

One important part is that people associated with foreign governments, without admitting that, take extreme positions in social media posts with the deliberate goal of sparking division and conflict. These extreme posts take advantage of the social media algorithms (算法), which are designed to heighten engagement Meanwhile, people seeking to influence others put things to more and more extreme positions. The result is apparent. Rather than most people having balanced views with fewer people holding extreme views, fewer and fewer people are in the middle.

What can be done? Skepticism about social media recommendations matters. Keep on a more deliberate path to information and avoid just clicking on whatever is recommended. Second, consider supporting efforts to require social media platforms to offer users a choice of algorithms for recommendations. Most importantly, invest more time in interacting with friends and family off social media. Probably, you’ll be far off a constructed track toward extremes.

【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Social media can put people’s privacy at risk.

B.Advertisements in mass media can influence people a lot.

C.Social media advertisements can drive people to extremes.

D.Advertisements account for damaged relation among family and friends.

【2】Which of the flowing employs “customized advertising techniques”?

A.Advertising on TV to promote the sales of a new product.

B.Advertising on apps to sell tailored political ideas individually.

C.Advertising in the newspaper to publicize a government policy.

D.Advertising in elevators to raise the public awareness of safety.

【3】What does the writer advise readers to do?

A.Refuse to get exposed to all the social media.

B.Manage to master the social media algorithms.

C.Interact more with family and friends for their advice.

D.Hold a careful attitude to what is proposed by social media.
